AI visibility tools: how to measure it for B2B
Copy for AI
Your traffic is dropping while your Google positions stay stable? Then you are probably in the blind spot of AI visibility. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews increasingly answer the same questions that used to send visitors to your site, and if your brand is not in those answers you lose visibility that your classic analytics does not even register. The short version: to measure that you need a new kind of tool, and in this piece you will read which categories exist, which metrics matter and how to choose without burning money.
At Customer Impact we are GEO specialists, and our stance is simple: measure visibility that generates leads, not a nice figure on a dashboard. Want to know how we approach that? Take a look at our GEO optimization.

Why can’t you measure AI visibility with Google Analytics?
Because most AI answers happen without a click. Someone asks ChatGPT a question, gets an answer in which your brand is or is not mentioned, and closes the window. No visitor arrives on your site, so your analytics sees nothing. Yet something did happen: your brand was recommended or not, positioned correctly or wrongly, with or without a competitor beside it.
That shift is not a fringe phenomenon. Gartner predicts that the volume of classic search queries will drop by 25 percent by 2026 due to the use of AI chatbots and virtual agents. That is a quarter of search behavior moving to a channel where your standard dashboard is blind.
AI visibility tools solve exactly that measurement problem. They monitor which LLM platforms cite your content, how often your brand is mentioned and how that evolves. A low-threshold first check is the AI visibility checker from Semrush, which shows you whether your brand pops up in AI answers. See them as the counterpart of your classic SEO tools, but for the AI era. Without that data you are guessing whether your GEO efforts are working. With that data you see in black and white which content gets cited and which gets ignored.
What kinds of AI visibility tools exist?
The market is young and moves fast, but roughly speaking the tools fall into two categories. Which one fits you depends on what you already use.
1. SEO suites with an AI module
These are the established SEO platforms that have added AI tracking to their existing package. The big advantage: they link your AI visibility to everything they already measure. You see, for example, which pages collect both backlinks and AI citations, or whether content that scores in classic search results also pops up in AI answers.
Some of these suites show a visibility score that works like a domain authority: a single number that sets your AI presence against that of competitors over time. Others specifically establish the link between your link profile and your AI citations, because content with quality backlinks is usually cited more often. That link is useful: it helps you recognize what makes a piece of content citation-worthy.
The downside lies in the price for those who scale. Many suites limit the number of projects per subscription. Managing five clients works fine, fifty quickly becomes expensive. For those who want to consolidate tools and already invest in such a platform, the AI module is often the logical choice.
2. Standalone LLM citation trackers
These tools do one thing, and do it well: they measure where your brand pops up in AI answers. They monitor your presence across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Bing AI, Google AI Overviews and new AI search engines, often in real time, with a notification if your citation frequency suddenly changes or if you drop out.
The better standalone tools measure not only frequency but also the quality of the mention: does a model position you as a primary source or as a side note, and does incorrect information appear somewhere next to your name? Some also offer prompt simulation, where you can fire off industry-specific questions to see whether your brand appears and how you score against competitors per AI engine.
For enterprise brands there are specialized citation intelligence tools that go even deeper: they analyze the sentiment around each mention, which competitors are named alongside you and in which topics you are seen as an authority. That depth comes at a price, with annual contracts that start high and scale with query volume. It is not built for small businesses, but it is defensible for brands where AI visibility directly touches their market position.
Which metrics should you really measure?
Not every figure a tool shows is a figure that explains revenue. A few metrics keep coming back and are worth the attention:
- Brand mentions: how often your brand is named in AI answers within your domain, over a given period.
- Citations: which of your pages are actually cited as a source, not just mentioned.
- Prompt level: which concrete questions trigger your brand, so you know which topics you are strong on and where your gaps are.
- Competitive comparison: how your presence evolves against other players in your sector.
- Sentiment and context: are you positioned positively or neutrally, and does incorrect information appear next to your name?
This is where our level-headed side comes out. A high visibility score that cannot be linked to questions where your audience actually buys is a vain figure. For B2B, what counts is whether you appear on the buying-intent prompts in your niche, not whether you pop up somewhere in a general list. So rather measure ten relevant prompts well than a thousand irrelevant ones. Want to know which indicators we use? Read the five core indicators of AI visibility.
How do you choose the right tool for your situation?
Start with three key questions: what is your budget, how technical is your team and do you need standalone AI tracking or an integrated SEO platform? After that you can weigh things in a targeted way.
- Budget determines your realistic options. Some all-in-one platforms offer AI visibility alongside full SEO features at an accessible price. Enterprise tools deliver granular intelligence but require a serious commitment that only makes sense at scale.
- Technical level matters. Some tools assume you are comfortable with data analysis, export and API. Others bet on simplicity with clear dashboards. Match the complexity to your team.
- Look at your existing stack. If you already work with an SEO suite, the AI module extends your workflow without learning a new interface. If you start from scratch or want laser focus on AI, a standalone tool fits better.
- Think about scale. Following five sites differs fundamentally from managing fifty client accounts. Some tools charge per project, others offer unlimited projects under one subscription.
- Data quality weighs heavily. Newer tools sometimes offer attractive features but lack the infrastructure for consistent figures. Request demos, compare results and check reviews before you sign.
And one last, often forgotten criterion: how quickly does the tool adapt? AI search changes at breakneck speed, and tools that do not grow with it fall behind. Choose a platform with an active roadmap and expanding coverage across new AI engines.
Our honest addition: for most Belgian B2B brands an expensive enterprise tool is overkill. Start small, measure the prompts that matter for your business, and scale up only when the data justifies it. Sometimes a tool simply is not worth it, and then we say so too.
Frequently asked questions about measuring AI visibility
What is the best AI visibility tool?
There is no absolute best. The best tool depends on your budget, your team and your existing stack. An SEO suite with an AI module suits those who want everything in one dashboard; a standalone tracker suits those who only want to follow LLM citations. Test a few before you decide.
Do AI visibility tools replace my classic SEO?
No, they complement each other. You still need a strong content strategy and SEO fundamentals, as described at Moz. See AI tracking as an extension of your analytics, not as a replacement. The combination of both gives the complete picture across all channels where your audience finds you.
How often should I measure AI visibility?
Monthly is enough for most B2B brands to see trends, with an alert for sudden drops. AI models update regularly, so a one-off measurement says little. It is about the evolution, not about a snapshot.
Can I also estimate AI visibility without a paid tool?
Partly. You can manually test your most important buying prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews and note whether and how your brand appears. That is labor-intensive and not scalable, but as a baseline measurement for a small brand it is an honest starting point.
Ready to measure your AI visibility?
AI search keeps growing, and the brands that measure now will be ahead of those who wait. The question is not whether you should track your AI visibility, but how you do it without wasting budget on figures that explain no leads.
