Citation rate

How often an AI engine cites your brand or content as a source in its answers, a core metric to measure success within GEO.

By Tanguy De Keyzer · Founder & digital strategist

Citation rate is how often an AI engine such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or an AI Overview actually cites your brand or content as a source in its answers, relative to the number of relevant questions.

Why it matters

In classic search results, everything revolves around your position in a list of links. In AI answers, that list no longer exists: there is one composed answer, with a handful of sources. If you are not mentioned there, you simply do not exist in that context. A high citation rate means AI systems trust your content and use it repeatedly to support their answer. That is exactly what GEO steers on: not only being found, but being named and cited in the answer itself.

Why it is a better metric

Citation rate is more interesting than isolated vanity metrics because it sits close to intent. Someone who asks a large language model a concrete question and gets your brand back as an answer is a potential customer at a decisive moment. At Customer Impact we therefore prefer to look at whether you are cited for questions buyers really ask, rather than abstract visibility figures. It is about citations that can produce customers and revenue, not about a high number without business value.

How do you steer on it?

You raise your citation rate with content that is answer-ready: clear, factually correct and easy to cite. Answer real questions briefly and concretely, support them with your own expertise and make sure your brand comes across consistently and reliably across the whole web. Also build authority through brand mentions and strong sources, because AI engines prefer to cite what they already encounter often and in a trusted context.

From theory to growth.

We turn Citation rate into measurable results for your business.
