An AI Overview is the AI-composed answer Google places at the top of many search results, built from multiple sources instead of a row of blue links.

How does it work?

For a query, Google has a large language model read the most relevant pages and from them write a short, coherent answer. Below or beside that answer are the sources that get cited, with a link. The user thus gets an answer immediately, without having to click a result. Which questions get an AI Overview varies by topic and changes constantly, because Google rolls out these answers step by step. For you the question shifts from “how do I rank at the top?” to “how do I become the source the AI answer uses?”.

What it means for your traffic

AI Overviews reinforce the pattern of zero-click searches: more answers are resolved directly on the page. The share of queries that still produces a click therefore falls. At the same time a new opportunity arises, because being cited in the answer puts your brand at the top, even if the classic position falls away.
