Ahrefs Brand Radar explained: measuring AI mentions
Copy for AI
Ahrefs Brand Radar is a module within Ahrefs that measures how often and how prominently your brand appears in AI answers, such as those from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews. Instead of counting classic rankings, the tool shows whether AI assistants name and cite your brand when people ask something in your field. In this article you will read what Brand Radar does exactly, which figures it reports, what it costs and when it is or is not the right choice for a B2B brand.
Brand Radar is a measurement instrument within the broader field of generative engine optimization. If you want the full picture first, read our complete guide to GEO.
What is Ahrefs Brand Radar?
Brand Radar is the AI visibility module from Ahrefs that tracks how a brand shows up in AI search results. According to Ahrefs itself, the tool is based on a very large set of search-grounded prompts, derived from real “People Also Ask” questions in their keyword database. That is the key difference with many competitors: the prompts reflect what people actually search for, not a list of questions you invent yourself because you hope to show up for them.
You enter a domain or brand name, and Ahrefs automatically recognises the brand and its associated competitors. You can then review, per AI platform, how often you are mentioned and which sources feed those AI answers. Brand Radar belongs to the same family as the AI mention monitoring we describe on our page about AI visibility tools, but as part of the Ahrefs ecosystem.
Which AI platforms does Brand Radar cover?
Brand Radar tracks your brand across the major AI assistants and search surfaces that matter today. At the time of writing, the tool covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, among others. Grok is partly supported, but its coverage is more limited due to policy changes on that platform’s side.
Ahrefs is also experimenting with tracking mentions on channels such as YouTube, Reddit and TikTok, partly still in beta. That is relevant because AI models lean heavily on those kinds of sources. Bear in mind that the exact platform list and beta status change regularly, so always check the current Ahrefs documentation before drawing conclusions.
Which metrics does Brand Radar report?
Brand Radar works with four core metrics that together paint a picture of your AI visibility. They are worth keeping clearly apart, because they measure different things.
- Mentions: the number of AI answers that name your brand at least once. This is the broadest measure of visibility.
- Citations: the AI answers that cite your brand as a source, so with a reference to your content. This carries more weight, because a citation means the AI actually uses you as an authority.
- Impressions: mentions weighted by search volume, to estimate how much potential exposure a mention delivers.
- AI Share of Voice: your share of impressions relative to the total for answers in which one of the tracked brands appears. This lets you benchmark yourself against competitors.
The difference between being mentioned and being cited is no small detail. A citation is closely tied to your broader brand authority, a theme we dig into in brand mentions over backlinks. Which of these figures really matter to you depends on your goal. In the 5 core indicators of AI visibility we explain how to translate these signals into something that relates to leads and revenue, rather than a standalone vanity score.
How does Brand Radar work under the hood?
Brand Radar does not run on questions you make up, but on a large database of real search prompts. Ahrefs runs those prompts against the various AI platforms, records the answers and analyses which brands and sources appear in them. Those raw mentions are then weighted by search volume to arrive at impressions and Share of Voice.
By making visible which sources feed AI answers, you can also see which pages and domains are cited most often in your topic. That is practically usable: it points you to the places where you should be present. The process by which AI determines what is true and which sources it trusts is described in grounding: how AI determines what is true. That helps you understand why one source gets quoted and another does not.
What does Ahrefs Brand Radar cost?
Brand Radar is not a free part of Ahrefs, but a paid add-on on top of a running subscription. A basic Ahrefs subscription starts at around 129 dollars per month, and the Brand Radar AI indexes are sold on top of that, per platform or as a bundled package for all AI platforms combined. In practice, a full setup therefore quickly runs into several hundred dollars per month, and higher still for extensive configurations.
Because prices and packages change regularly, we deliberately give no exact final figure here. Check the current rates on the Ahrefs pricing page before you decide. The core message stays the same: this is a serious investment, not an impulse purchase. For a small B2B brand it is wise to have your goal sharply defined before you commit that budget.
Who is Brand Radar suitable for, and who not?
Brand Radar fits best with brands that already work with Ahrefs and that want to track their AI visibility seriously against competitors. If you already work in Ahrefs for your SEO, the barrier is low and your data sits in one environment. The link to real search prompts also makes the figures more credible than tools that run on self-invented questions.
Even so, it is not the right choice for everyone, and we are honest about that. Independent reviews point out that the all-in costs are considerably higher than those of many dedicated AI visibility tools, and that the depth for specific AEO analyses is sometimes more limited than with specialised players. For a small B2B company that mainly wants to know whether it shows up in ChatGPT and where it can improve, a simpler or cheaper measurement setup may be enough. The real work, after all, is not in the measuring itself, but in what you do with the insights.
At Customer Impact we therefore look at your goal first. A tool like Brand Radar is a measurement instrument, not a strategy. We would rather steer on mentions and citations that ultimately deliver leads and revenue than on a high Share of Voice that leads nowhere. Whichever measurement setup you choose, it should give you direction, not just fill a dashboard. That is how our generative engine optimization works too: measuring to improve, not to impress.
The short summary
Ahrefs Brand Radar is a credible module for measuring how your brand shows up in AI answers, with four useful metrics (mentions, citations, impressions and Share of Voice) and a strong grounding in real search prompts. The price is a serious barrier, though, and the tool mainly makes sense if you are already in the Ahrefs ecosystem. What matters most remains what you do with the figures: a measurement instrument does not improve your visibility, your actions do.
