How to Rank in Google AI Overviews
Copy for AI
Ask Google a question and, more and more often, what appears at the top is not a list of blue links but a ready-made answer. That is an AI Overview: a short summary Google generates with AI from several web pages, along with a few sources. For you as a brand, that changes the stakes. The question is no longer just “am I ranking first in Google”, but “am I mentioned in the answer Google itself gives”. In this article you will learn what AI Overviews actually are, how Google decides which content ends up in them, and how to improve your chances.
What are Google AI Overviews?
An AI Overview is the AI-generated block Google places at the top of the search results for certain queries. Instead of sending you straight to a website, Google summarises the answer in a few sentences. Below it and beside it are the sources the answer was built from, with a link to the original page.
The difference from the classic search results is fundamental. Previously the goal was: rank high so that someone clicks your link. With an AI Overview the goal is broader: get mentioned or cited in the answer itself. Because many people read that summary and are satisfied by it, without clicking any further. If you are in that answer, you are visible at the moment the decision is made. If you are not in it, you simply do not exist for that searcher at that instant.
This is exactly what generative engine optimization is about: making sure AI systems, whether that is Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT or another assistant, include your brand in their answer. AI Overviews are the version of this that sits closest to your existing Google visibility.
How does Google select content for an AI Overview?
Google does not build an AI Overview out of nothing. The model generates the summary from existing web pages it considers relevant and trustworthy enough. That is good news, because it means the foundation is largely the same as that of classic SEO. Anyone who is already found well in Google has a head start.
A few principles play a role here.
Relevance to the exact question. Google matches the query to content that genuinely answers the question, not content that merely discusses it. A page that directly addresses “what is X and how does it work” is more useful for a summary than a page that only touches on the topic vaguely.
Clarity and structure. The model has to be able to read your text and pull out what it needs. Short, clear sentences, logical headings and a build-up that answers a question step by step make it easier to cite your passage.
Authority and trust. Google weighs up whether a source is reliable. Mentions elsewhere, a recognisable brand, the expertise you demonstrate and backlinks that point to you all contribute to the signal that your content is worth putting into an answer.
Fresh and consistent information. For many topics Google prefers content that is current and not contradictory with what the rest of the web says. If your information is correct and up to date, the threshold to cite you is lower.
Important to realise: there is no separate button or separate channel for AI Overviews. You are not optimising a standalone system. You strengthen your ordinary findability and good content flows through into the AI summary.
Also bear in mind that an AI Overview often combines multiple sources. Google rarely pulls a complete answer from a single page, but builds a summary from fragments of different sites. That means you do not have to “win” the whole summary. It is enough that your passage gives the best, clearest answer to one sub-question within the larger topic. Anyone who splits their content into clearly delineated pieces that each answer one question makes it easy for Google to lift exactly that fragment and attribute it to you.
How do you optimise for AI Overviews?
The approach builds on your SEO foundation and adds a layer on top that is specifically aimed at how AI models read and summarise.
Start with a strong SEO foundation
Without a foundation there is no AI visibility. If you are not found in the classic index, you will not appear in an AI Overview either. So first make sure the basics are right: a technically healthy site, content that really answers, and authority that you build. If you are still at the start of this, read what is SEO and follow the SEO step-by-step plan. To find out where you stand today, start with an SEO audit.
Write answers, not detours
AI Overviews cite passages that answer a question directly. So formulate your core answer early and explicitly. Do not put the conclusion right at the bottom, but give the key idea in a paragraph at the top. Deal with the nuance afterwards. Think in terms of the questions your audience really asks and answer them in clear language, without jargon or marketing fog.
Structure for machines and for humans
Use descriptive headings that reflect the question behind them. Work with short paragraphs, lists where that makes sense, and a build-up that lets the model lift and cite one clearly delineated piece. A page that is clear for a reader usually is for an AI model too.
Build demonstrable authority
A model prefers to cite a source it trusts. Show your expertise: who writes this, why you are entitled to speak on it, what experience sits behind it. Make sure your brand is mentioned elsewhere and that credible sites point to you. Those signals help Google decide whether you belong in the answer.
Keep your information correct and current
Contradictory or outdated information is a reason not to use you. Update your important pages, keep figures and facts correct, and make sure what you claim holds up. Consistency with the rest of the web increases your chances of being the source Google chooses.
AI Overviews are one place, not the whole story
Google AI Overviews are an important place to be mentioned, but not the only one. That same question is also asked to ChatGPT, to other assistants and to classic search results that, for now, simply continue to exist. The gain is that the tactics largely overlap: clear content, a readable structure and genuine authority pay off in all those places at once. How exactly these elements fit together, you can read in GEO vs SEO and in the practical application in SEO for AI.
The underlying principle stays the same one we apply on every assignment. Visibility in an AI Overview is not an end in itself. The goal is more leads and revenue. Whether someone finds you via a blue link, via an AI summary or via ChatGPT, your site has to convert that visitor. That is where our AI findability and SEO come together: not chasing vain positions, but making sure you are mentioned where your audience decides, and that this attention also delivers something.
