Google AI Overviews: find where you already rank and turn those positions into citations

Copy for AI

Most companies approach AI visibility as if it were a blank sheet: new content, new pages, a new strategy. That’s a waste, because you are probably sitting on a gold seam already. The pages you rank strongly with today in the classic search results are statistically your best candidates to be cited in Google AI Overviews and AI answers. Not because ranking and citation are the same thing, but because they are strongly connected.

In this article I show how to systematically track down the queries where you already rank well and where an AI answer appears, how to assess whether you are being cited, and how to optimize those pages afterwards so an AI actually extracts your content. It’s a tactical part of the ultimate GEO guide, which covers generative engine optimization from foundation to measurement.

Test your AI visibility: score your page with our GEO check.

Why your strongest positions are your best AI candidates

The numbers are unambiguous. An analysis of 1.9 million citations across 1 million AI Overviews found that 76% of cited pages sit in Google’s top 10 (Ahrefs, July 2025). The primary citation has a median position of 2, and the three most visible citations together a median position of 3. In other words: AI systems draw overwhelmingly on content that already ranks high.

At the same time, stay realistic about the strength of that link. Ahrefs describes the correlation as positive but moderate: ranking position 1 improves your odds of a citation, but those odds remain “a coin flip at best”. An independent study reached comparable conclusions and quantified the citation probability per position.

The lesson is clear. A top ranking doubles to triples your chance of a citation compared to page two, but position alone isn’t enough. You need the position as the entry ticket, and on top of that content that lends itself to extraction. That’s why the smartest GEO strategy is twofold: first find where you already hold the ticket, then make those pages extraction-ready.

METHOD From top position to AI citation Step 1 Find your positions Search Console, top 5 Step 2 Check the AI Overview who gets cited? Step 3 Make it extractable direct answer + table Step 4 Measure & monitor monthly, watch for erosion Four steps you repeat for every query
The four steps to turn existing top positions into AI citations.

Step 1: find your strong positions in Search Console

Google Search Console is your starting point, because it shows exactly which queries earn you impressions and clicks, and at what average position. Work like this:

  1. Open the Search results report and set a period covering the last three months.
  2. Add the Average position and Impressions columns.
  3. Filter on positions less than or equal to 5 and sort impressions in descending order.
  4. Export the list: these are your pages with the greatest authority per topic.

This list is your working stock. These are the queries where Google already considers you a strong source, and therefore exactly the queries where an AI system is most inclined to cite you. Combine this with the insights from your broader on-page SEO, so you know which pages are already in order technically and editorially.

While filtering, pay extra attention to informational, question-driven queries (“what is”, “how”, “difference between”, “best way to”). Those are the searches that most often trigger an AI Overview. Transactional queries (“quote”, “price”, “buy”) produce an AI answer less often and are therefore lower priority for this exercise.

Step 2: check which queries show an AI Overview

Not every query with a strong position appears under an AI Overview, so the next step is verification. Go through your exported list and search each query manually in Google (ideally in an incognito window and in the right region, so google.be for Belgium) to see whether an AI answer appears and who gets cited.

For longer lists, a tool pays off. Many rank trackers and GEO platforms now automatically detect whether a query triggers an AI Overview and whether your domain appears in it. You’ll find an overview of what’s available in our article on AI visibility tools. Whatever you use, you split your queries into three buckets:

  • Already cited: you appear in the AI Overview. Protect and expand.
  • AI Overview present, you not cited: your highest priority. You rank strongly but miss the citation, so this is where the biggest gain sits.
  • No AI Overview: lower priority, but keep these because AI answers are expanding fast into new queries.

The middle bucket is where the leverage is. You already have the position, so you don’t have to fight for authority. You only need to make your content extraction-ready.

Step 3: optimize the page for extraction

An AI system doesn’t summarize your page, it extracts specific passages. Whether you get cited therefore depends on whether your page contains self-contained, fact-dense chunks that answer the question directly. Concretely, for each page in your priority bucket:

  • Answer the question in the first two sentences. Place a direct, standalone definition or answer under the relevant heading, without references such as “as above” or “this approach”. The passage has to hold up when lifted out of the page in isolation.
  • Match the exact phrasing of the question. Use the query from Search Console as an H2 or as a sentence in the text, so the semantic match with the AI question is as strong as possible.
  • Add a table or a list. Structured, fact-dense content (comparisons, steps, figures) gets extracted more often than running paragraphs.
  • Make entities explicit. Spell out brands, products and concepts in full instead of using “it” or “they”, so a passage stays understandable without context.

These principles fall under what we call grounding snippets: the atomic passages an AI actually takes over. A single page can yield multiple snippets and therefore multiple AI citations, which makes optimizing an existing top ranker extra profitable.

Step 4: measure, and watch for erosion

AI visibility isn’t a project but a process, for two reasons. First, the numbers shift. Research by seoClarity across 362,000 queries (October 2025) showed that the overlap between AI Overview citations and the top 10 fell to 32% on average, while the number of full overlaps has been declining since May 2025. Tellingly: when an AI Overview cites just one source, the overlap with the top 10 rises to 89%. The more selective the AI, the more it leans on your position.

Second, a citation is never a permanent possession. Repeat step 2 monthly on your priority queries and track when you win, lose or get replaced. Tie this to your organic ranking data: if a position drops, your citation odds drop with it, so classic SEO remains the foundation. If you want to strengthen those fundamentals, read how to structurally rank higher on Google.

Treat the three buckets as a rolling backlog: protect what you have, conquer where you already rank but miss the citation, and monitor where AI answers newly appear.

Beyond your own pages, it pays to find the articles where a brand mention delivers the most for your AI visibility, because off-site mentions also steer who an AI ends up citing.

Frequently asked questions

Does a high ranking automatically mean an AI citation?

No. A high position significantly improves your odds (roughly a 58% chance of a citation at position 1 according to Originality.AI), but it’s no guarantee. AI systems also weigh how well your content answers the question directly and extractably. Position is the entry ticket, extraction-friendly content is what lands the citation.

How do I know which queries I already rank strongly for?

Through Google Search Console. Filter the Search results report on an average position less than or equal to 5 and sort by impressions. The queries at the top are the topics where Google already sees you as a strong source, and therefore your best candidates for an AI citation.

Do I need to create new content for AI visibility?

Don’t start from scratch. The fastest gain sits in optimizing existing pages that already rank strongly but aren’t yet cited. Apply new content to topics where you haven’t built a position yet, because without an underlying ranking the citation odds are low.

How often should I check my AI visibility?

Monthly for your priority queries. AI Overviews are volatile: citations appear, disappear and switch source, and the average overlap with the top 10 dropped noticeably between May and October 2025. Regular monitoring shows you where you’re gaining or losing ground.
