Google Search Console explained: how to use it

Copy for AI

Google Search Console is the free tool from Google that shows how your website performs in the search results: which words you appear for, which pages are indexed, and where the problems are. It is indispensable for SEO, and it costs you nothing. In this article you will read what you can do with it, how to get started, which reports really matter, and which mistakes to avoid.

What is Google Search Console?

Search Console is the direct line between you and Google. Where an ordinary tool estimates how you are doing, Search Console shows the real data from Google itself: your impressions, your clicks, your positions and your problems. It measures organic, unpaid traffic only, so the clicks you earn without paying for them.

It is not an optional extra. It is the foundation of every serious SEO approach, it belongs in every SEO toolset, and Google explains itself how to get started with it.

Why it is free and still essential

Most paid SEO tools estimate your traffic based on a sample of keywords. Search Console does not: it reports what Google itself saw. That is why it is your only source of truth about your organic positions and your indexing status. In practice we see that a dashboard full of expensive tools looks impressive, while the decisive data sits here for free. The only thing it costs is the discipline to look at it every week.

The core reports that really matter

Search Console is packed with data. These are the reports you will open most often, each with a concrete purpose.

Performance: queries, clicks and positions

The performance report shows which keywords you appear for, how many impressions and clicks you get, your average position and your click-through rate (CTR). Filter by page or by country to see which content performs. This report is gold for finding opportunities: it shows where you are already visible but do not take the click yet. A common mistake is to look only at clicks and ignore impressions, while those impressions are exactly what shows you where the latent demand sits.

Indexing and coverage

The indexing report shows which pages are in Google and which are not, with the reason for each exclusion: blocked by robots, marked as noindex, or simply not crawled yet. This is where you discover whether important pages stay invisible. Dig into the indexing report in Search Console if you are missing pages that should be there.

Experience and Core Web Vitals

The experience report scores your pages on loading speed and visual stability based on real visitor data. Slow or unstable pages cost you both positions and conversion. See Core Web Vitals for what the scores mean and how to improve them.

Sitemaps

In the sitemap report you submit your XML sitemap and see how many URLs Google picked up from it. A submitted sitemap helps Google find your pages faster, certainly on a new or large site. A sitemap does not guarantee indexation, but it speeds up discovery.

Enhancements and URL inspection

Under enhancements you find notifications about structured data and usability. With the URL inspection you check one specific page: is it indexed, when was it crawled, and if needed you request indexing.

How to set it up and verify your site

In three steps you are live:

  1. Create a free account at Google Search Console.
  2. Add your website and confirm that it is yours, usually via a DNS record at your domain provider or a piece of code on your site.
  3. Submit your sitemap, so that Google finds all your pages easily. See website indexing.

Where possible, choose verification at domain level, because it immediately covers all subdomains as well as both http and https. On top of that, always claim access yourself. Your own Search Console belongs on your account, not only with your agency. We see far too often that a client has no historical data at all after a break with their agency, simply because the property was never in their own name.

Practical insights from your data

Search Console gives you the data, but not the meaning. The art is knowing which numbers count and what to do with them.

Striking distance: positions 8 to 15

Words where you rank just below or just above the first page can often be lifted up with a small push. Filter your performance on positions 8 to 20, look at which of those pages already get impressions, and improve the content or internal links in a targeted way. This is usually your fastest win. You can read more about this at striking distance keywords.

CTR: impressions that never become a click

A page with many impressions but a low click-through rate loses clicks on the results page itself. That is often due to a weak title or meta description. Rewrite them so that they hit the search intent better. See improve organic CTR for the approach.

Spotting indexing problems

If important pages get no impressions at all, check in the indexing report whether Google actually includes them. An accidentally placed noindex, a block in robots.txt or a canonical that points to the wrong page keeps good content invisible. This kind of silent mistake costs you leads without you noticing.

Common mistakes

  • Only looking at clicks. Impressions show where the demand is; whoever ignores them misses half the opportunities.
  • Leaving the data only with the agency. Without your own property you lose your entire history when you switch.
  • Confusing Search Console with Analytics. Search Console measures the path to your site from Google; GA4 measures what visitors do afterwards. You need both.
  • Steering on average position as the only KPI. An average hides outliers. Look per query and per page.
  • Ignoring notifications. An indexing or security notification left unattended often grows into a traffic problem.

From data to more leads

Search Console is not a goal in itself. The goal is more leads. The data points you to the opportunities, but you also have to use them with strong pages and a good conversion rate. Steer on leads and opportunities, not on vanity impressions. How to report well without falling into number fetishism, you can read in SEO reporting. Frequently asked questions

Is Google Search Console really free?

Yes. Search Console is completely free and has no paid version. You only need a Google account and access to your domain or website to verify the property.

What is the difference between Search Console and Google Analytics?

Search Console measures how you appear in Google’s search results: impressions, clicks and positions. Google Analytics 4 measures what visitors do on your site afterwards. The two complement each other; for SEO you start with Search Console.

How often should I check Search Console?

For most sites it is enough to look at the performance report weekly and respond immediately to new indexing or security notifications. Deeper analyses, such as an SEO audit, you do periodically or when traffic drops.
