What is a referring domain?
Copy for AI
A referring domain is a unique website that links to your site at least once. It makes no difference whether that site mentions you once or fifty times: it remains one referring domain. That is exactly the difference with backlinks, where every individual link counts separately. In this article you will read what a referring domain precisely is, how it relates to your backlinks and why this distinction tells you how strong your link profile really is.

What is a referring domain exactly?
A referring domain is every separate website (every separate domain) from which at least one backlink points to you. If you get three links from a trade magazine and two from a partner site, you have five backlinks but only two referring domains.
The distinction seems small, but it says something fundamentally different. Backlinks count the number of votes; referring domains count the number of different voters. And as Ahrefs explains the difference, every referring domain by definition has at least one backlink, while a backlink always belongs to exactly one domain.
For SEO, that difference matters. A hundred links from a single website say less about your credibility than ten links from ten different, relevant websites. Broad trust carries more weight than repeated trust from the same corner.
Referring domain versus backlink: the difference in short
| Backlink | Referring domain | |
|---|---|---|
| What does it count? | Every individual link | Every unique website that links |
| 10 links from 1 site | 10 backlinks | 1 referring domain |
| 1 link from 10 sites | 10 backlinks | 10 referring domains |
| What it shows | How many links you have | How broad your trust is |
The practical lesson: do not blindly look at a large number of backlinks. A profile with a thousand links from twenty domains is usually weaker than a profile with two hundred links from a hundred relevant domains. If you also want to know why a referring page is something different again from a referring domain, read what a referring page is.
Why do referring domains carry more weight than backlinks?
Google wants to know whether your content is broadly trusted, not whether a single friendly site happens to give you a lot of links. Every new, relevant domain that points to you adds an independent trust signal. A second, third or tenth link from that same domain adds far less to it.
That is why most SEO tools and analyses look at the number of unique referring domains as the core measure of a link profile’s strength. It is also the metric that moves along with scores such as domain authority: if a competitor wins many new referring domains, you often see that reflected in their authority and their rankings.
Quality remains essential. Five referring domains from your sector, from sites that genuinely reach your audience, do more than fifty random domains with no connection. Quantity without relevance is not a goal.
How do you build more relevant referring domains?
You earn more unique referring domains the same way you earn strong backlinks: by being or making something others are happy to refer to. Think of your own research, useful guides, a handy tool or expertise you share on industry platforms. Every new site that links to you because of it is an extra referring domain. You will find the concrete approach in link building.
An honest caveat for B2B: do not chase the number. For a small Belgian B2B company, a handful of strong, relevant domains per year often delivers more than a long list of weak mentions. And a growing number of referring domains means nothing if your site does not convert those extra visitors into enquiries. That is why we steer on customers and revenue, with referring domains as a compass, not as a scoreboard.

Frequently asked questions about referring domains
What is the difference between a referring domain and a backlink?
A backlink is every individual link to your site. A referring domain is a unique website that provides at least one backlink. Ten links from the same site are ten backlinks, but only one referring domain.
What is more important: more backlinks or more referring domains?
Usually more unique referring domains. Broad trust from many different relevant sites carries more weight than many links from the same corner. The quality and relevance of the domains count most of all.
How many referring domains do I need?
There is no fixed number. It depends on your sector and your competitors. The better question is how your number of relevant referring domains compares to that of the sites ranking above you.
Do multiple links from the same domain not count?
They do count as extra backlinks, but they add little to your number of referring domains and to your trust signal. The biggest gain lies in a new, relevant domain that links to you for the first time.
