How does a DNS lookup work step by step?

A DNS lookup runs through several links that together track down the address:

  • The resolver receives the question from your browser or provider and goes looking for the answer.
  • The root servers and TLD servers point the way based on the extension, for example .be or .com.
  • The nameservers of your domain hold the actual records and return the final IP address.
