SEO audit: what it examines and what it delivers

Copy for AI

An SEO audit is a thorough analysis of your website that maps out why you are not ranking higher and what you need to fix. A good audit looks at four layers: technical health, content, authority and strategic positioning. It differs from a quick check because it is complete and prioritised. You do not get a standalone score, but a concrete action plan. In this article you will read what an audit examines exactly and what you get out of it.

What is an SEO audit exactly?

An SEO audit is a complete examination of your website through the eyes of Google and your visitor. The goal is simple: find what is holding you back, and determine what you should tackle first.

Do not confuse it with a quick SEO check. A check is a first look that you do yourself or with a free tool. An audit goes much deeper. It examines not only whether the technical side is sound, but also whether your positioning and your content match what your audience is searching for. The check tells you something is wrong. The audit tells you what, why and in which order to fix it.

What does a complete SEO audit examine?

A good audit looks at four layers. Most tools only see the first. That is exactly where the difference lies.

1. Technical health

Can Google crawl and index your site smoothly? Here we look at loading speed, mobile rendering, broken links, your sitemap, your canonical tags and any blocks that make pages invisible. A technical site audit maps out precisely these points automatically. This is the foundation. If the technical side fails, the rest will not help. On B2B sites it is often exactly crawlability, incorrect canonical tags and a messy internal link structure that make the difference between being found or not.

2. Content and on-page

Does every page target the right keyword? Are titles, descriptions and headings in good shape? And more importantly: is the content genuinely valuable? A page can be technically perfect and still not rank because nobody finds it compelling.

3. Authority and off-page

Do other sites link to you? Backlinks from trustworthy sources tell Google that you are worth trusting. We map out your link profile and compare it with your competitors.

4. Strategic positioning

This is the layer that tools miss entirely. What is your site currently known for? Does that match what you want to be found for? Companies often target keywords that do not match their actual content and message. No tool sees that. For that you need a person who understands your market.

Content ultimately ranks for one reason: because it is genuinely valuable to the user and engagement is high. An audit that only measures the technical side therefore misses the most important cause.

Prioritising: the 20% that blocks 80% of your traffic

An endless audit with a hundred small findings does not move you forward. The value lies in the order. Apply the 80/20 rule: roughly 20% of the fixes deliver 80% of the SEO result. So you first fix the handful of issues that hold back the most organic traffic, and only then the details.

Why sharp prioritising matters so much is clear from a sobering figure in research by Ahrefs: 96.55% of all content gets no organic visits from Google at all. The vast majority of the web is simply never found. An audit that does not tell you which 20% to tackle first leaves you in that same silent zone. That is why we rank every finding by impact, not by the order in which we discovered it.

What do you get after an SEO audit?

A score is not a result. A good audit delivers a prioritised action plan: a list of what is wrong, ranked by impact and effort. That way you know where the quickest wins are and what can wait.

What it should contain as a minimum:

  • The real cause behind your lagging traffic and visibility.
  • The problems per layer, from technical health to positioning.
  • An order: what first, what later, and why.
  • An estimate of the expected impact per action.

Without that prioritisation you keep guessing. With that prioritisation you work on growth with focus. Want to know how we approach this in an engagement? Take a look at our SEO service.

How often do you need an SEO audit?

A thorough audit is not something you do every month. Once a year is enough for most companies, plus an extra audit after a major change: a new website, a migration or a drop in your rankings.

In between, a lighter SEO check is enough to see whether everything stays on track. The audit sets the direction, the check keeps a finger on the pulse.

SEO audit yourself or outsource it?

You can check part of the technical side yourself with free SEO audit tools. That gives you a first impression and is a good start.

But the two layers that make the difference, content and positioning, require an experienced eye. Someone has to understand your market, read your competitors and see whether your content genuinely convinces visitors. A tool does not pick that up. Torn between doing it yourself, a freelancer or an agency? Then read SEO freelancer or agency.

What does an SEO audit cost?

The price depends on the size of your site and the depth of the analysis. Some agencies offer a one-off audit, others include it in an ongoing engagement. With us, a first exploratory scan is free. You will find an overview of our rates on the pricing page.

Do not fixate on the cost. An audit that finds the real cause and gives you a plan pays for itself quickly in extra leads. Want the broader figures? Read what SEO costs.

From audit to more leads

An SEO audit is not a goal in itself. The goal is more leads. More traffic alone is not enough. We constantly see companies leaving opportunities on the table because their website does not convince visitors.

The quickest win often lies not in more visitors, but in a better conversion rate through conversion optimisation. In the engagements we roll out for more leads, we often see the number of enquiries double or even triple.

For example, a strong SEO approach at Gom Nederland delivered 400% more daily visitors within 66 days.
