What does SEO cost on average?

OptionIndicative price
Freelancer (starter)500 - 800 euros / month
Experienced freelancer2,000 - 2,500 euros / month
Agencyfrom 1,000 euros / month
One-off SEO audit500 - 2,500 euros

These are guide prices. The right investment depends on your situation. Those guide prices line up with the international market: an international study into SEO prices and packages among hundreds of companies shows that for 50.8% of businesses the monthly budget sits between 500 and 7,500 dollars, with 1,001 to 2,500 dollars as the most common bracket. The average in that study comes out at around 2,917 dollars per month.

By way of illustration: here is how the indicative monthly budgets of the common profiles compare, with the caveat that a budget that is too low often delivers worse returns because no room is left for a real strategy.

EXAMPLE: MONTHLY SEO BUDGET What does SEO cost per month? Freelancer (starter) 650 euros/month Often too low for strategy Agency (entry level) 1500 euros/month Experienced freelancer 2250 euros/month Example figures for illustration; guide prices differ per profile and market.

What does the price depend on?

Two companies can both buy “SEO” and still receive invoices that are worlds apart. That comes down to four main factors. Know them, and you immediately understand why a quote lands high or low, and whether that is justified.

The reach of your goals (scope)

Scope is the biggest price driver. Being found locally for a handful of search terms is a completely different project from ranking nationally on competitive keywords. A dental practice that wants customers within 15 kilometres will do fine with a limited local SEO package. A SaaS company that wants to reach all of Belgium and the Netherlands needs ongoing content, technical work and authority building. The common mistake: trying to reach a national goal with a local budget. See also what local SEO costs if your goal is close to home.

Competition in your market

The more companies fighting over the same search terms, the more work it takes to become visible and stay visible. In a quiet niche, strong content and clean technical work can already take you far. In a saturated market such as insurance, law or e-commerce, you also have to invest heavily in authority and link building, and keep that up for months. In practice we see that competition drives up the timeline just as much as the monthly price: you not only pay more, you also need longer.

The state of your website

A technically healthy site with a clean structure can produce results quickly. A site with slow load times, a messy URL structure or duplicate content first requires clean-up work before growth is possible. That explains why many projects start with an SEO audit: you want to know how much ground you have to make up before you invest in growth. One specific pitfall: during a website redesign you can unintentionally lose rankings, buying yourself months of catch-up work that a good migration would have prevented.

The size: pages and languages

More pages and more languages simply mean more work. In practice every language is its own mini website that you have to optimise and maintain separately, and a catalogue with hundreds of pages calls for a different approach than a site with ten pages. Many companies budget for a handful of pages and then get stuck because their real site turned out to be much bigger.

Freelancer, agency or in-house?

Who does the work also determines the price and the risks. There is no universally best choice: it depends on your budget, your internal knowledge and how much continuity you need. The comparison below gives the broad strokes (amounts are indicative and vary strongly per profile and market).

ApproachIndicative costStrengthRisk
Freelancerapprox. 500 - 2,500 euros / monthFlexible, short lines, often sharply pricedSingle point of failure in case of illness or overload
Agencyfrom approx. 1,000 euros / monthMultiple specialisms, continuity, reportingHigher cost, less of an “in-house” feel
In-housesalary cost of a full-time SEO plus toolsFull focus on your businessExpensive, vulnerable when they leave, broad expertise hard to find in 1 person

A freelancer is often cheaper, but is vulnerable if that person drops out. An agency costs more, but offers more expertise and continuity. In-house gives you the most control, but it is hard to unite all disciplines (technical, content, link building, data) in a single hire. We put the options side by side in our comparison of SEO costs for a freelancer, agency and in-house, and we explain the broader trade-off in our guide on outsourcing SEO. Still unsure about the profile? Our checklist on how to choose an SEO agency helps you ask the right questions.

One-off or monthly?

SEO costs roughly fall into two forms, and confusing them is an expensive mistake.

  • One-off investments. Think of an audit, a technical clean-up or a content migration. This is project work with a beginning and an end, usually a few hundred to a few thousand euros.
  • Monthly investments. SEO is not a one-off action but an ongoing process of content, technical work and authority. This usually runs through an SEO retainer with a fixed monthly price.

The common mistake is thinking that a one-off audit means you are “done”. An audit tells you what needs to happen, but the result only comes when you execute the recommendations month after month. So above all, count on the ongoing cost.

Why going too cheap costs you money

A low budget feels safe, but often works against you. Research shows that companies with the lowest budgets are clearly more often dissatisfied with their SEO results. The reason is almost always the same: too little budget to execute a real strategy, so results fail to appear. A realistic budget tied to a clear plan pays off better than a low monthly price without direction.

Common mistakes when choosing

The biggest cost items are rarely in the monthly price, but in wrong choices that you pay for twice later. These three are the ones we see most often.

Choosing on price alone

The cheapest quote often wins, and then loses. A low monthly price almost always means fewer hours, and with too few hours a real strategy never gets off the ground. Do not compare the monthly price, but what you get for it: how many hours, which activities, and which leads that is expected to deliver. A more expensive partner who grows your revenue is cheaper than a cheap partner who delivers nothing.

Offers like “100 backlinks for 99 euros” sound attractive, but almost always deliver low-quality links that harm your authority rather than help it. Google values relevant, earned links, not packages bought in bulk. In the worst case you buy a problem that you will have to get cleaned up later. No clear agreements about reporting

Without clear agreements on what you get back each month, you are paying for a black box. Ask up front which KPIs are reported, how often, and whether they tie into revenue instead of vanity metrics such as rankings alone. We prefer to steer on leads and pipeline rather than on a ranking nobody searches for. Modern SEO is increasingly about the whole search experience rather than just positions; we explain separately what SXO (search experience optimization) exactly involves.

What does SEO deliver?

Do not fixate on the price. The real question is your return. A cheap partner who delivers no leads is more expensive than a strong partner who grows your revenue. On top of that, SEO keeps paying off, even after you stop paying, unlike advertising. Where in Google Ads you keep paying per click (according to WordStream an average of 5.42 dollars per click across all sectors), with SEO you build an asset that keeps working. That is how you build a lasting ROAS.

What to look out for

Be critical of extremely low prices or guaranteed rankings. Good SEO takes time and expertise, and nobody can guarantee a first place. Google warns about this itself: its official documentation on when you need an SEO states explicitly that nobody can guarantee a top position in the search results and that such a promise is a warning sign. A partner who is honest about the timeline is more reliable than one who promises results in two weeks. Want to estimate first whether the investment pays for itself? Frequently asked questions

How quickly will I see results from my SEO budget?

Count on months, not weeks. Most projects show first movement after three to six months, with stronger results after that. The more competitive your market and the weaker your starting position, the longer it takes. We explain the timeline in our guide on how long SEO takes.

Is a more expensive agency always better?

No. Price says little without context. A higher budget that goes into the right activities pays off better, but an expensive partner without a clear strategy delivers just as little. Look at what happens for the budget and what return that is expected to deliver, not at the price alone.

Can I do SEO myself to save costs?

Partly yes, certainly the basics such as good content and clean technical work. But the time it takes and the expertise you lack often outweigh the saving. Many companies start on their own and outsource later once they see how much ongoing work it is.
