AI SEO: How to Get Found by ChatGPT and Google AI
Copy for AI
More and more people search through AI: ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews give a direct answer instead of ten blue links. AI SEO makes sure your brand sits inside that answer. It builds on classic SEO, but with extra emphasis on clear answers, structure and authority. In this article you will read what is changing and what you concretely do to get found and cited.

What is AI SEO?
Classic SEO aims for a high position in Google. AI SEO aims at something new: being named in the answer an AI model gives. That is also called GEO, generative engine optimization.
The goal shifts from “click my link” to “name my brand as the answer”. If you want the full explanation, read what is GEO. Here we look at what it means for your SEO.
Why this matters now
Search behaviour is changing faster than many companies realise. People ask ChatGPT their question and get one answer, assembled from sources the model trusts. If you are not among them, you do not exist in that conversation.
The companies investing now are building a head start. Just like with classic SEO, starting early is half the work. In practice we see that content you make clear and citable today keeps paying off in AI answers for months.
Do SEO and AI go together?
Yes, they reinforce each other. A large share of what AI models cite comes from the same signals that work in Google: clear content, a logical structure and authority. Google confirms in Search Central that helpful, reliable content written for people remains the foundation, even now that AI features assemble answers. External AI SEO guides point to that same overlap. Good SEO is therefore the base. AI SEO adds a layer on top.
The fundamentals stay the same three pillars from what is SEO: technology, content and authority. AI only asks that you deploy them slightly differently.
Classic SEO vs GEO: what changes?
The comparison below shows where AI SEO overlaps with classic SEO and where it diverges. The right-hand column does not replace the left, it builds on it.
| Aspect | Classic SEO | AI SEO (GEO) |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | High position, click to your site | Being named or cited in the AI answer |
| Unit of success | Rankings and clicks | Mentions and references in answers |
| Content format | Extensive page around a keyword | Direct answer, facts, clear definitions |
| Structure | Headings and internal links | Answer first, lists, tables, schema |
| Authority | Backlinks and domain strength | Backlinks plus mentions on sources AI reads |
| Crawlability | Allowing Googlebot | Deliberately allowing or steering AI bots too |
| Measurement | Search Console, positions | AI share of voice, mentions per prompt |
What do you actually do?
AI SEO is not a separate discipline next to SEO, but a set of sharpenings. These are the six that make the biggest difference in practice.
Answer immediately
Give the direct answer in the first paragraph, not after five scrolls. AI models like to pick up a clear, short answer they can take over almost literally. A good rule of thumb: open a page with a one or two sentence definition or conclusion, and only then work out the nuance. The common mistake is a long introduction full of background and context, which leaves the model without an extractable answer and sends it off to cite a competitor.
Structure for extraction
Question-based headings, short paragraphs, lists, tables and clear definitions make your content easy to break into chunks a model can reuse. See SEO copywriting for the writing side. The mistake we often see: one long slab of text without subheadings. A model cannot lift a single fact out of that and skips the page.
Build entity and authority
AI models reason in entities: brands, people and concepts they recognise and link to one another. Make sure your brand is described consistently, preferably across multiple sources. Read how to work on entity SEO and why entity consistency for AI visibility matters. The pitfall is inconsistency: different company names, addresses or descriptions on your site, LinkedIn and industry platforms, which leaves the model unsure about who you are.
Add structured data
Schema helps machines understand and categorise your content. Mark up your pages with schema markup and see how to add JSON-LD. Example: an FAQ with correct schema shows both model and search engine what the answer to each question is. The mistake: pasting in schema that does not match what is visible on the page. That works against you.
Make sure AI bots can crawl you
A model can only cite you if it is allowed to read your page. Check that your robots.txt does not accidentally block the relevant AI crawlers, and allow those bots deliberately. Our guide on allowing and optimising for AI crawlers covers which bots count. The classic mistake: a block set up once to ease server load, leaving you unintentionally invisible in AI answers.
Become citable
Show real expertise: your own data, experience and a clear source. Models prefer to cite what looks trustworthy. Do not only build backlinks, but make sure you get mentioned where AI models read, such as industry platforms and relevant communities. Work through the AI citation checklist for B2B and read how to become the source material AI takes over. The mistake: thin content without original insight, which gives no reason at all to cite you over a stronger source.
Common mistakes
- Keeping score on rankings alone. A page can show up all over AI answers while its classic position barely moves. Measure positions only and you miss that gain.
- Writing for the model instead of the reader. Keyword stuffing or thin AI text puts off readers and models alike. The foundation stays useful content for people.
- Forgetting the technology. A beautiful answer an AI bot is not allowed to crawl does not count.
- Inconsistent brand information. If your brand is named or described slightly differently everywhere, the model does not connect the signals.
How do you measure whether it works?
Unlike with Google, there is no simple ranking list. You measure AI visibility by tracking whether and how your brand gets named in AI answers to your most important questions. Start with a fixed set of prompts your customers would genuinely ask, and check per model whether you appear. Our guide on measuring AI visibility without tools shows how to do that manually, and by measuring AI share of voice you map your share against competitors. As with SEO, it is all about leads and visibility, not vanity numbers.
From AI visibility to more leads
AI SEO is not a goal in itself. The goal remains more leads. A good approach connects your findability in Google and in AI to your business. That is exactly what our generative engine optimization (GEO) aims at.

Frequently asked questions
Does AI SEO replace my classic SEO?
No. AI models lean largely on the same signals as Google: clear content, good structure and authority. AI SEO sharpens that foundation, it does not replace it. Anyone who neglects their classic SEO is rarely cited in AI answers either.
How long does it take before I appear in AI answers?
That varies per situation and we promise no fixed timeline. Models process content at their own pace and update periodically. In practice we see that strongly structured, citable pages surface faster than thin content. Starting early pays off, just as with SEO.
Can I start without expensive tools?
Yes. With a fixed set of prompts you can check yourself whether your brand gets named in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI. That gives you a baseline without paid software, and you immediately see where competitors show up and you do not.
