Schema markup: how to help Google understand your page

Schema markup is a piece of code that tells Google exactly what is on your page: a product, an article, a review or an FAQ. It lets you stand out in the search results with rich results, such as stars or frequently asked questions. In this article you will read what structured data is, which types matter, how to add it with JSON-LD, how to test it, and why it is becoming important for AI search engines too.

What is schema markup?

A human sees a recipe, a price or a review on your page. Google sees only text. Schema markup, also known as structured data, translates that text into a language machines understand.

You add an invisible piece of code that says: “this is an article, written by X, on date Y” or “this is a product that costs 49 euros and has 4.5 stars.” Google reads that and understands your page better. The vocabulary you use comes from Schema.org, a shared standard maintained jointly by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Yandex. That way every search engine speaks the same language.

Important to remember: schema changes nothing about what your visitor sees. It is a layer that only crawlers and AI models read. Your page still looks exactly the same, but becomes a lot clearer under the hood.

What does schema markup deliver?

In practice we see two concrete benefits.

  • Rich results. Your search result gains extra elements: stars, prices, FAQs, images or a breadcrumb trail. That stands out among the plain blue links and attracts more clicks. Google decides for itself whether it shows a rich result, so it is an opportunity, not a guarantee.
  • Better understanding. Google and AI models grasp what your page is about, who is behind it and how your content fits together. That helps your findability, including in SEO for AI.

Schema is no direct guarantee of a higher position, but it makes your result more appealing and clearer. It belongs to healthy technical SEO, alongside things like speed and a clean site structure.

The most important schema types

You do not need to use everything. Pick the type that suits the page. These are the types that render most often for B2B.

Organization

Describes your company: name, logo, website, social profiles and contact details. Put this on your homepage. It helps Google recognise your brand as an entity. Common mistake: linking the logo to an image that is not publicly reachable, so Google cannot fetch it.

Article

For blog articles and knowledge base pages. You mark up the title, author, publication date and the date of the last update. That way Google knows your content is fresh. Concrete example: this article has a datePublished and a dateModified that match the visible dates.

FAQPage

For frequently asked questions, with a chance of expandable questions in the search result. Only works if the questions and answers are genuinely visible on the page too. Never put a sales answer in the schema that the visitor does not see, because Google will ignore or penalise it.

Product and Review

If you show products or ratings. This lets price, stock and stars appear in the results. The star rating has to be about your own product and come from real users. Made-up reviews go against the guidelines.

LocalBusiness

For companies with a physical location: address, opening hours, phone number. Strong for local SEO and for findability in Google Maps.

For a clear breadcrumb trail in the results, so visitors see where the page sits in your site structure. Small in terms of work, but it makes your result easier to scan.

How do you add schema with JSON-LD?

The recommended way is JSON-LD: a separate block of code in your page’s source, usually in the <head>. Google explicitly recommends JSON-LD over the older methods (microdata and RDFa), because you keep the schema separate from your visible HTML. That makes it easier to maintain.

Many CMSs and SEO plugins add basic schema automatically. That is a fine start, but for the right result you want to check and complete it deliberately. You will find a concrete step-by-step plan in how to add JSON-LD and get found by ChatGPT and Google.

How do you test your schema?

Always test your code before you publish it. Two free tools from Google:

  • Rich Results Test. Paste your URL or code and see whether Google can show a rich result and which fields are missing.
  • Schema Markup Validator (schema.org). Checks whether your code is technically correct according to the standard, including for types that produce no rich result.

Schema and GEO: how AI understands your content

Structured data is no longer just an SEO trick for stars. AI search engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI overviews use clear, structured content to determine what a page is about and whether they may cite it. Schema makes that structure explicit.

Think of an FAQPage that indicates exactly which question belongs to which answer, or an Organization schema that helps AI recognise your brand as a reliable source. That is the core of generative engine optimisation: not ranking higher, but getting cited. The effect is hard to measure and Google confirms no direct ranking boost, but clarity has never worked against anyone.

Common mistakes

  • Showing schema that is not on the page. The biggest mistake. If you mark up a price or review the visitor does not see, that is misleading and Google ignores or penalises it.
  • Skipping the testing. Without the Rich Results Test you publish blind. A small syntax error makes the whole block unusable.
  • Wanting to mark up everything. More schema is not better. Pick the type that suits the page and leave out the rest.
  • Not updating dates and fields. A dateModified that never changes undermines the impression of fresh content.
  • Expecting schema to lift your position. Schema makes your result more appealing and clearer. The ranking itself you earn with relevance, authority and a good user experience.

Frequently asked questions

Does schema markup lead to a higher position in Google?

Not directly. Google does not use structured data as a ranking factor in itself, but it can produce rich results that attract more clicks. More clicks and a clearer result help you indirectly. See it as an amplifier of good content, not as a replacement for it.

Do I need schema on every page?

No. Add schema where it fits: Article on knowledge base pages, FAQPage for questions, Organization on your homepage. A thin page without relevant content does not improve by sticking schema on it.

What happens if my schema is incorrect?

In case of an error, Google simply shows no rich result and you fall back on an ordinary search result. With schema that does not match the visible page, you risk a manual action. So always test before you publish. You will find the official guidelines in Google’s documentation on structured data.
