Schema markup services: approach, cost and what you need

Copy for AI

Hiring a schema markup service means a specialist adds structured data to your website, so that search engines and AI systems understand exactly who you are, what you offer and how your parts connect. It is a scoped project with an audit, a data model, a technical rollout and validation, not a button you flip. In this buyer’s guide you read what such a project involves, how long it takes, roughly what it costs and what you need to supply yourself to get started smoothly.

Schema markup is a foundation beneath broader AI visibility. Want the bigger picture first? Then read the complete GEO guide.

What is schema markup and why would you have it implemented?

Schema markup is a standardized vocabulary (schema.org) that lets you make explicit in code what the information on a page means. A human sees “Customer Impact, Ghent, B2B marketing”. Without markup, a machine only sees loose text. With markup, that same machine sees an Organization with a name, a location and a service offering, plus the links that connect it to other entities.

That explicit meaning matters for two reasons. First, it helps classic search engines interpret your content correctly. Second, and this is becoming increasingly important, it gives AI search systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews reliable, machine-readable facts to cite. AI models decide what they treat as true partly on the basis of consistent, structured signals, a mechanism we explore in depth in how AI decides what is true.

Important and honest: do not have your schema implemented purely for eye-catching search results with stars and expandable questions. In recent years Google has in fact wound down many of those rich results. HowTo results disappeared back in 2023 and FAQ results have, in 2026, been phased out for most sites. The lasting value of schema does not lie in those cosmetic snippets, but in the clear, reliable context you hand to every machine.

When is a schema markup service worth it (and when is it not)?

It pays off most when you have an entity that search engines and AI must be able to identify unambiguously: a B2B company with services, a clear location, authors behind your content and products or packages with concrete characteristics. The more you want to become a recognizable player in a niche, the more structured data strengthens your position.

It pays off less if your site is one simple landing page without depth, or if your content and company details are still changing constantly. Schema locks down facts, and facts that change every month cost more maintenance than they return. Our rule of thumb: only invest in markup once your entity and your main page types are stable enough to describe consistently. Schema is moreover an amplifier, not a saviour. If you have no authority or content, markup does not compensate for that.

For B2B organizations the trade-off is usually positive, because the buying journey is long and decision-makers do their research across multiple channels. How markup fits into that broader B2B picture, you read in our guide on GEO for B2B.

What does a schema implementation project involve?

A solid project consists of four parts, and when buying you want to see all four named.

  1. Audit and inventory. The specialist maps your page types (homepage, service pages, knowledge articles, about, contact) and checks what markup is already there. Often a theme or plugin contains outdated or faulty schema that must be cleaned up first.
  2. Data model of your entities. This is the core. Which entities do you have (Organization, the people behind your brand, your services, your articles) and how do they connect to each other via properties like sameAs, author and about? A coherent model prevents each page from becoming an island and strengthens your entity consistency.
  3. Technical rollout. The markup is added, preferably as JSON-LD, the format search engines recommend because it stands separate from your visible HTML. Good work means reusable templates per page type, so that new pages automatically get correct schema.
  4. Validation and monitoring. Each template is tested with the validation tools from schema.org and Google, and checked for errors and warnings. Then monitoring follows, so that regressions from content changes are spotted in time.

Schema does not stand apart from the rest of your page build. It works best together with a clear content architecture for AI extraction, where text and structure reinforce each other.

How does such a project run and how long does it take?

A schema implementation typically runs in three phases: discover, build and validate. The timeline depends on the number of page types and how accessible your CMS is, not on the total number of pages.

For a scoped B2B site with a handful of page types, this is usually a short project of a few days to a couple of weeks of turnaround, including feedback rounds. If you have a more complex platform, multiple languages or a custom CMS, that grows because each template has to be tested separately. The work lies in the templates, not in the quantity of pages: once a page type is right, it scales along with all pages of that type.

PROCESS IN THREE PHASES From audit to validation 1 Discover audit & inventory 2 Build data model & rollout 3 Validate test & monitor Timeline depends on your page types, not your number of pages.

Count the first weeks after go-live as part of the project. Only then do you see, in the validation tools, whether everything is picked up correctly, and can you clear the last warnings.

What does a schema markup service cost?

Honest answer: there is no fixed rate, and anyone who slaps a round number on it right away without seeing your site is guessing. Cost is mainly determined by three factors: the number of different page types, the complexity of your CMS or tech stack, and the state of your existing markup.

Roughly, you see three levels. A simple implementation on a standard CMS with a few page types sits at the lower end of the spectrum and is a limited, one-off investment. A mid-sized B2B project with a considered entity model and multiple templates sits above that. A complex or multilingual custom platform sits at the top, because it demands more analysis, development and testing.

Two pieces of advice to compare apples with apples. Ask for a tailored scope instead of an hourly rate, so you know what you get. And ask explicitly whether you take away reusable templates and documentation. That determines whether you can later continue on your own or have to pay again each time. What a service around AI visibility involves with us, you read on our page about being found in AI search engines.

What do you need on your side to get started?

To get started smoothly, it is best to supply four things. First, access to your CMS or your hosting environment, because the markup has to be injected somewhere. Second, your correct and current company details: official name, address, contact details and the official profiles (LinkedIn, your Google Business Profile) you want to point to. Third, a list of your main page types and services. Fourth, if available, access to Google Search Console, so the implementation can be checked against real data.

The cleaner and more consistent that input, the faster and cheaper the project. Inconsistent company details across your site and external profiles are the most common slowdown, because they have to be straightened out first before the markup is right.

What should you watch out for when choosing a provider?

Watch three things. Does the provider first ask about your entities and goals, or does it launch straight into plugins? The first points to a data-model approach, the second to isolated tricks. Do you get reusable templates plus documentation, or a black box that locks you in with every change? And does the provider steer on results that matter, like correct interpretation and citability, or on vanity promises like guaranteed stars in the search results? Nobody can make those guarantees stick.

Want to know where you stand first before you invest? Then a complete GEO audit is a logical first step. It brings your markup, your entities and your AI visibility together in one view.

The short summary

Hiring a schema markup service is a scoped project, not a plugin: audit, data model, technical rollout and validation. The timeline depends on your page types and CMS, not your number of pages, and the cost varies along with it. Do not buy it for the rich snippets, because Google is winding those down, but for the reliable, machine-readable context AI search systems need to cite you. Supply clean company details and CMS access, and choose a provider that delivers reusable templates instead of a black box.
