What Is Google AI Mode and How Does It Differ from AI Overviews?

Copy for AI

Google AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience within Google where you ask complex questions, get an AI answer and can follow up on it, the way you would with ChatGPT. It is something other than AI Overviews, the short AI summary that appears at the top of the regular search results. In this article you will read what AI Mode is exactly, how it works technically, how it truly differs from AI Overviews and what that means for your brand’s visibility.

What is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is a tab of its own within Google Search where searching becomes a conversation instead of a list of links. You ask a detailed question, get a coherent AI answer with sources alongside it, and can immediately ask a follow-up question that builds on what you just asked. The context is preserved, so you can dig deeper step by step without starting over each time.

AI Mode runs on Google’s Gemini models and is meant for questions you would previously have spread across several searches: comparisons, trade-offs, research with multiple conditions. Think of “which software vendor suits a manufacturing company of 50 employees that has to stay ISO-certified”. Such a question is hard to capture in a single keyword, and that is exactly what AI Mode was built for.

Google launched AI Mode in 2025, first in the United States and then in dozens of additional countries, including the Netherlands. The feature grew fast: by 2026, more than a billion people worldwide were using it every month. Whether AI Mode is already fully rolled out in your market at the time you are reading this is something you are best off checking directly, because availability by country changes quickly. The direction is clear either way: search is becoming conversational.

This is one of the places that generative engine optimization is about: making sure AI systems include your brand in their answer, regardless of whether that answer comes from AI Mode, AI Overviews or another assistant.

How does AI Mode work technically?

AI Mode chops your question into pieces and runs several searches on them at once, a mechanism Google calls “query fan-out”. Instead of running a single search on the words you type in, the model derives a series of sub-questions from your question. If you ask about the best approach to B2B lead generation in a niche market, AI Mode searches at the same time for the niche itself, for lead generation tactics, for what works with long sales cycles, and so on.

That has two consequences you need to understand.

The system digs more broadly than a classic search. Because AI Mode fires off multiple queries at once, it reaches pages that would never rank for the exact keyword the user typed in. A page that answers a specific sub-question excellently can therefore surface in an answer to a much broader question.

A single keyword no longer determines whether you are found. The link between “this keyword” and “this page” loosens. What counts is whether your content covers the underlying sub-questions the model derives from a topic. Whoever builds their content around real questions instead of around isolated keywords fits better with how AI Mode reasons.

The model then assembles one answer from all those partial results, with references to the sources it used. As with other AI search systems, the rule is: if you get cited, you are visible at the moment the user decides.

What is the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?

The core difference is that AI Overviews show a summary within the regular search results, whereas AI Mode is a full, conversational search experience in its own right. They live side by side and solve different needs.

AI Overviews are the AI block at the top of a regular search results page. You ask a question, Google places a short summary above the blue links, and the classic results still sit below it. It is a layer on top of the search experience you know. How you get in there, you can read in getting found in Google AI Overviews.

AI Mode is a separate environment. Here there are no ten blue links as the main course, but a conversation. You follow up, refine, compare and build context across multiple turns. In use, it resembles an AI assistant like ChatGPT more than a search engine.

The practical differences at a glance:

  • Location. AI Overviews sit within the normal results. AI Mode is a tab or mode of its own.
  • Interaction. AI Overviews are one-way: you get a summary. AI Mode is a conversation with follow-up questions.
  • Type of question. AI Overviews suit direct questions. AI Mode is built for complex, multi-part questions that call for exploration.
  • Depth. AI Mode deploys query fan-out more firmly and dives deeper into the web than an average AI Overview.

Google is moreover pulling the two toward each other. From an AI Overview you can ask a follow-up question and thus flow over into a conversation in AI Mode, with your context traveling along. For you as a brand that means: it is not a matter of choosing between the two. It is one moving whole in which you can be mentioned at several moments.

How do you become visible in AI Mode?

You do not optimize separately for AI Mode, but you increase your chances by creating content that answers every sub-question within your topic clearly and credibly. Because AI Mode searches by sub-questions via query fan-out, you gain ground through breadth and clarity, not by playing a single keyword.

Concretely, the following works.

Cover the topic in clearly bounded blocks. Break a theme down into the questions your audience really asks and answer each question in its own, clearly delimited part. That way the model can lift exactly the fragment that fits a sub-question. How to tackle that structurally, you can read in content architecture for AI extraction.

Give the answer first. Put the core at the top of each section in one clear sentence and work out the nuance afterwards. A model would rather cite a passage that answers right away than a detour with a conclusion at the bottom.

Build demonstrable authority. AI Mode weighs whether a source is trustworthy. Show who sits behind the content and what expertise is involved, and make sure your brand is mentioned elsewhere on the web. That trust lowers the threshold for including you in an answer.

Keep your information accurate and current. Contradictory or outdated information is a reason to skip you. If what you say is correct and lines up with the rest of the web, you more easily become the source the model chooses.

The beauty is that this approach pays off everywhere at once. The same clear, well-structured and credible content helps you in AI Mode, in AI Overviews and in other assistants. That is what we focus on with our AI visibility: not chasing vain positions, but making sure you get mentioned where your audience decides.

The short summary

Google AI Mode is Google’s conversational search tab, built for complex questions in which you follow up. AI Overviews, by contrast, are the short summary at the top of the regular results. AI Mode breaks your question via query fan-out into sub-questions and thus digs broadly through the web, so that a single keyword no longer determines whether you are found. You win visibility through content that answers every sub-question clearly, with demonstrable authority and accurate, current information, exactly what also pays off in AI Overviews and ChatGPT.
