Free tools to check your AI visibility
Copy for AI
Yes, you can check your AI visibility without spending a cent. The fastest free method is to ask your most important buying questions yourself in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini and note whether and how your brand appears. On top of that, there are free checkers from well-known SEO players that deliver a snapshot within seconds. In this article you will read which free AI visibility tools exist, how to use them and, just as important, where they hit their limits.
At Customer Impact we are a GEO specialist for B2B, and our stance stays level-headed: a free check is fine to start, but ultimately measure the questions that generate leads, not a non-committal number. If you want the full picture, first read our guide on GEO.
How do you check your AI visibility manually and for free?
You already have the cheapest tool: the AI assistants themselves. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot directly the questions your audience uses to look for a solution, and see whether your brand is mentioned, how it is described and which competitors show up next to it.
A few tips to do this meaningfully:
- Test buying intent, not brand name. Do not ask “what does [your company] do”, but “which provider helps me with X in [region or sector]”. That way you see whether you surface when someone does not know you yet.
- Repeat the question. AI answers vary each time. Ask the same prompt a few times and in a new conversation, so a lucky hit does not give you a false picture.
- Note the sources. Perplexity and Google AI Overviews in particular show which pages they cite. There you concretely see which content is or is not referenced.
This is labour-intensive and not scalable, but as a baseline for a small B2B brand it is an honest and entirely free starting point. You also quickly learn which topics make you strong. If you want to understand more deeply how to specifically end up in those assistants, read getting found in ChatGPT.
Which free AI visibility checkers exist?
Beyond manual work, a few established SEO players offer a free checker that automates the asking of prompts for you. They run a series of questions across multiple AI platforms and show whether your brand appears.
The AI Visibility Checker from Ahrefs is entirely free and requires no registration. The tool checks whether your brand is mentioned in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, and delivers a report within seconds. It is deliberately a limited preview: you get a one-off overview with the main results per component, without history or custom prompts.
The AI Search Visibility Checker from Semrush works comparably and is likewise free to use. Semrush sends prompts to platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google, and shows whether your brand is mentioned plus the context around it. Semrush also has a separate free checker that looks specifically at your presence in Google AI Overviews.
Important to know: many specialised trackers you come across online are not really free, but only offer a free trial period of, say, two weeks with a handful of prompts. Handy for testing, but do not count on it as a lasting solution. For a broader overview of both free and paid options, including the standalone trackers and SEO suites with an AI module, read our guide on measuring AI visibility.
Where do free AI visibility tools hit their limits?
The biggest limitation is simple: a free tool gives you a photo, not a film. You see a snapshot, but AI visibility is about the evolution, because models update regularly and answers vary each time. Concretely, the free versions almost always miss the following:
- Historical tracking. You see today, not the trend. Whether you are moving forward or backward stays invisible.
- Custom prompts. You usually cannot set the exact buying questions from your niche, while those are precisely what makes the difference for B2B.
- Competitor comparison. You know whether you appear, but not how you stand relative to the players next to you.
- Depth and alerts. Sentiment, context and a notification on a sudden drop sit in the paid tiers.
On top of that, there is a measurement problem no tool removes: most AI answers happen without a click. Someone gets their answer and closes the window, so your classic analytics sees nothing. That is why you cannot measure AI visibility with Google Analytics anyway, free tool or not.
Our honest caveat: a free snapshot is fine for establishing that you have a gap, but it does not tell you whether your content is citation-worthy or why you drop out. For that last part you need grounding and the core metrics, not just a yes or no.
When do you move from free to paid?
Move over the moment you want to structurally track which buying prompts trigger your brand, not the moment a dashboard looks nice. For most Belgian B2B brands, the logical order is this:
- Start free. Do a manual baseline on your ten most important buying questions and run a free checker over it. That way you know within an afternoon where you stand.
- Determine whether there is a gap. Do you appear nowhere on questions with buying intent? Then there is work to do on your GEO approach, and you solve that with content, not with a tool.
- Only pay for monitoring. Do you want to follow the evolution and the competition on your own prompts month after month? Then a paid platform pays off. The paid versions of these tools quickly cost several hundred euros or dollars a month, so let the choice depend on what you will actually follow up.
An expensive enterprise tool is overkill for most SMEs. Start small, measure the prompts that count for your business, and only scale up when the data justifies it. Sometimes a tool simply is not worth it, and then we say so too.
Frequently asked questions
Are free AI visibility tools reliable?
For a snapshot yes, for follow-up no. A free checker shows whether your brand surfaces today, but AI answers vary each time and models update. So treat a free result as one sample, not as a definitive verdict. Repeat the check and combine it with manual testing.
Do I need an account for a free checker?
Not always. The free checker from Ahrefs requires no registration and gives an immediate result. Other free tools, like the one from Semrush, sometimes work with a free account that limits your usage per day. Always read what “free” exactly covers before you leave your data behind.
Does a free tool replace a real GEO strategy?
No. A tool measures your visibility, it does not improve it. Whether you get cited depends on your content, your entity consistency and your authority. The tool points out the gap, closing it is done with a well-thought-out GEO approach.
The short summary
You can perfectly check your AI visibility for free: ask your buying questions yourself to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and run a free checker from Ahrefs or Semrush over it. Expect a snapshot, not monitoring, and only pay for a tool when you want to structurally follow the evolution on your own prompts.
