Most companies still invest in SEO as if it were 2015
Most companies still invest in SEO as if it were 2015.
They optimize for Google while a growing share of today’s research and orientation runs through AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude.
These models do not draw their knowledge only from websites that rank high in Google.
They train on community sources like Reddit, Wikipedia, news sites, Quora and review platforms. That means: if your brand is not mentioned there, you are largely invisible to a language model. It cannot recommend you if it never comes across you.
This is exactly the difference between classic findability and what we describe in our complete guide to Generative Engine Optimization. SEO is about a blue link that you control. GEO is about how often and how favorably others talk about you in places that models trust.
Why Reddit has such a strong influence on LLM answers
Reddit is to language models what backlinks once were to Google: a signal of human relevance. Every post, thread and comment contains real human context, exactly the kind of language a model needs to build a credible answer. When a brand or product is mentioned repeatedly and in the right context in relevant subreddits, that information is more likely to be picked up, both in training data and in real-time retrieval (as with ChatGPT’s search function or with Perplexity).
There are three reasons why Reddit carries so much weight:
- Real experience instead of marketing language. People write there about how something works in practice, with pros and cons. A model reads that as more trustworthy than a product page.
- Structured context per topic. A subreddit groups thousands of similar questions and answers. For a model, that is a rich source around your exact theme.
- Publicly accessible and easy to search. The content is open, long-lived and heavily cited, which makes it appear more often in the sources AI systems retrieve.
A concrete example. When someone asks ChatGPT: “What is the best fleet management platform in Belgium?”, it is likely to point to companies that are regularly mentioned by real users, that are contextually linked to relevant topics like logistics, SaaS or telematics, and that consistently deliver valuable contributions instead of appearing once.
The rise of GEO: Generative Engine Optimization
At Customer Impact, we no longer help companies just be findable in Google through classic SEO, but also to be present in the answers of ChatGPT and other models. That is the core of our GEO and AI search optimization service: making sure your brand is mentioned, cited and recommended at the moment an AI makes a choice for your audience.
In our analyses of AI answers, we keep seeing the same pattern: brands with authentic community mentions and user-generated mentions come back more often in generative answers than brands that communicate only through their own website.
That is no coincidence. Reddit is among the sources that generative systems often consult, and you see the same dynamic in Google’s AI Overviews. Whoever is relevantly present there builds up AI trust: the new equivalent of domain authority, but measured in mentions and trust rather than in links alone.
An ethical Reddit playbook for LLM visibility
Reddit punishes promotion mercilessly. Anyone who comes in with a sales pitch gets downvoted, removed or banned, and that hurts your brand more than it helps. The only approach that works in the long run is one that adds real value. Below is the playbook we use ourselves.
The playbook runs in four steps, from listening to where your audience is to encouraging real users:
Step 1: find the right subreddits (where)
Start by listening, not by posting. Map out where your audience actually is. For B2B in the Benelux, that is often specialized subreddits around an industry, software, entrepreneurship or a profession, plus broader communities where purchasing questions come up.
- Search on your category and on the problems you solve, not only on your brand name.
- Note which threads already appear when you ask ChatGPT or Perplexity your core questions. Those are the discussions models already use today.
- Look at where competitors are mentioned and in what tone. That shows you where the conversation is happening.
Step 2: read the rules and the culture (how)
Every subreddit has its own rules and its own tone. Read them before you post anything. Some communities forbid any form of self-promotion, others have dedicated threads where it is allowed. The unwritten rule everywhere is the same: give more than you ask.
- Build a history first. An account that only talks about one brand reads as advertising.
- Answer existing questions within your area of expertise before you ever mention your own brand.
- Be transparent about who you are. If you work for a company, say so. Hidden interests are almost always spotted and turn against you.
Step 3: contribute with real expertise (what)
The mentions that count for LLM visibility arise as a side effect of useful contributions. Write answers that hold up even without your brand name.
- Share concrete knowledge: how you tackle a problem, which trade-offs matter, which pitfalls exist.
- Only mention your own solution when it is truly relevant, and be honest about its limits.
- Also point to alternatives and competitors where that is fair. A balanced answer is trusted more often, by people and by models alike.
Step 4: encourage real users instead of faking it
The strongest signals come from customers who talk about you on their own. You cannot buy that, but you can make it possible.
- Make it easy for your satisfied customers to share their experience where it fits, without a script and without a reward in exchange for praise.
- Collect recurring questions from Reddit discussions and answer them thoroughly on your own site, so you become a source people spontaneously refer to.
- Be present in AMAs or expert threads where your expertise is welcome.
What you never do
A few things break your reputation and your AI trust in one blow. Avoid them completely.
- No fake accounts, bought upvotes or invented reviews. Reddit and the models behind it are getting better and better at detecting them, and the damage is lasting.
- No copy-paste promotion across dozens of subreddits. That is spam and it is treated as spam.
- No made-up figures or claims. What you write on Reddit can literally end up in an AI answer. Make sure it is accurate.
Wrong or invented information is, by the way, not only a risk you create yourself; models sometimes invent facts on their own. What an AI hallucination exactly is and why your brand should take it seriously, you can read separately.
How we approach this
At Customer Impact, we pour this playbook into a repeatable process, so it becomes measurable instead of accidental.
1. Reddit Forensics
We analyze which subreddits your audience is active in, which threads ChatGPT and Perplexity already cite today, and where competitors are mentioned.
2. Community Seeding
We build brand mentions through authentic contributions, honest experiences and expert participation. Never spam, always value, always transparent.
3. GEO Tracking
We track how often your brand comes back in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answers, so you know which efforts truly have impact and which do not.
4. AI-Trust Score
You get a clear report with your mention rate, the quality of the sources that talk about you, and the trust signals models use to select brands.
Why Reddit marketing is different from ordinary social media
Reddit is not a channel for promotion, but for authenticity. The community immediately sees the difference between value and sales pitches. That is why we work with an approach that steers on trust and not on reach:
- real users who share their experience,
- thought leadership around your field,
- mention strategies that build authority over time instead of forcing peaks.
That is the difference between “a few stray reactions” and structural visibility in AI answers.
Measure impact, not vanity figures
The goal is not “being active on Reddit”. The goal is for your brand to be mentioned more often and more favorably at the moment an AI makes a recommendation, and for that to translate into leads and revenue.
That is why we steer on signals that truly matter:
- your mention rate in AI answers to the questions your buyers ask,
- the quality and tone of the sources that talk about you,
- your branded search volume, which usually rises along with it when people see your name more often in AI answers,
- and ultimately the leads and conversations that come out of it.
Stray upvotes or reach figures say little. Whether a model trusts and recommends you says everything.
Conclusion: whoever invests in credible mentions now wins in ChatGPT later
The battle for visibility is shifting from search engines to generative models. Companies that build their presence in trusted communities and their AI mentions now lay the foundation for a lead that is hard to catch up on, precisely because it is not for sale.
