What Is Majestic? The SEO Tool for Backlink Analysis Explained

Copy for AI

Majestic is a third-party SEO tool that specialises in analysing backlinks: which websites link to you, how many there are and how strong they are. The tool is best known for two in-house figures, Trust Flow and Citation Flow. In this article you will learn what Majestic does, what those scores mean and when they are genuinely useful for B2B.

What is Majestic exactly?

Majestic (Majestic SEO in full) crawls the web and maintains a large index of the links between websites. Where some tools try to be all-in-one, Majestic is above all a backlink specialist. You use it to see who links to you, who links to your competitors, and how those link profiles compare.

Backlinks are and remain an important signal for search engines. A link from a relevant, trustworthy site works like a recommendation. If you want to understand that foundation first, read what backlinks are and how link building works.

Worth knowing: Majestic is one of many tools on the market. We mention it here neutrally, as an explanation, not because you necessarily need it. Which SEO tools make sense depends on your situation.

Trust Flow and Citation Flow: what do they mean?

In 2012 Majestic introduced two metrics that are now widely used. Both run from 0 to 100.

  • Trust Flow (TF). Measures the quality of the links pointing to a site. Majestic starts from a manually selected set of trustworthy websites and measures how close your links sit to that trusted source. The more high-quality links you have, the higher your Trust Flow. See Majestic’s own explanation.
  • Citation Flow (CF). Measures the quantity of links, so how many point to your site, regardless of their quality.

The difference is crucial. A site can have a high Citation Flow (lots of links) but a low Trust Flow (those links are weak or spammy). That is why you look at the ratio between the two: many low-quality links are not a strong signal, while a few high-quality links often are.

This table puts the two figures side by side:

CharacteristicTrust Flow (TF)Citation Flow (CF)
What it measuresQuality and trustworthiness of your linksNumber and influence of your links
Scale0 to 1000 to 100
Starting pointSet of manually vetted, trustworthy sitesFull link index, regardless of quality
A high score meansYour links come from authoritative sourcesMany links point to your site
PitfallSlow to build, demands real authorityEasy to inflate with weak links

The ideal situation is a healthy balance, where your Trust Flow does not lag far behind your Citation Flow. A big gap between the two is often a sign of a link profile that puts quantity above quality.

Important: these are not Google numbers

Just like domain authority from other tools, Trust Flow and Citation Flow are estimates from an external company. Google does not use them in its algorithm. They are an approximation, not an official ranking.

That does not make them useless, but it does mean you should view them through the right lens. Use them as a compass to compare your link profile with competitors, not as a goal in itself. A pretty number without leads does not pay the bills.

What do you use Majestic for in practice?

A backlink tool like Majestic is mainly handy for four jobs. We briefly explain each one with what you actually do with it.

In a single overview you see who links to you and whether those are quality or questionable sources. In practice you use that to make sure your profile keeps growing healthily instead of filling up with junk.

Analysing competitors

You look at where your competitors get their strongest links. Sites that give them a link from a relevant context are often a realistic target for you too.

Sites that link to several competitors but not to you are interesting targets. This kind of overlap analysis (sometimes called link intersect) produces a concrete list you can get to work with.

A profile full of bad links can harm you and deserves a clean-up. Majestic helps you surface those suspicious sources, so you can judge whether they pose a risk.

A concrete B2B example

Picture this: a B2B software company sees that a competitor structurally ranks higher on important search terms. A backlink tool reveals that this competitor has dozens of links from trade media and industry sites, while its own profile consists mainly of weak directory links. The lesson is not “we need more links”, but “we need the right links”. The company then focuses on a handful of relevant trade publications. That matches how we build a lead-focused SEO approach, where authority is a means and not a goal.

The mistake we see most often is people treating Trust Flow as a goal. They chase a higher number and therefore collect links that briefly lift the score but contribute nothing to real visibility or leads. A score is an indicator of underlying quality, not an achievement in itself. Choose the link well and the number follows by itself. Chase the number and you often build a profile that looks good on paper but delivers little in practice.

We would rather say it upfront. For a small B2B company with a limited link profile, an expensive backlink tool often adds little. You do not need a subscription to know that you have to build authority. In that case, invest first in link-worthy content and a handful of strong, relevant links.

A tool like Majestic only becomes truly valuable once you are actively doing link building, want to monitor several competitors or need to clean up a larger link profile. And even then the rule holds: steer on leads, conversions and revenue, not on a rising Trust Flow. The number is a means, not a goal. That is how a strong, lead-focused SEO approach delivered more than chasing vanity metrics, as shown by how we brought a website to the first page of Google and held that position.

Do you want to build your authority with purpose?

We compare your link profile with that of your competitors and build your authority safely, aimed at leads and not at a vanity number. We will also tell you honestly when a tool or investment is not worth it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Majestic free?

There is limited information available without an account, but the real analyses sit behind a paid subscription. For occasional use there are also free and cheaper alternatives that are enough for a small link profile.

What is the difference between Trust Flow and Citation Flow?

Trust Flow measures the quality of your backlinks, Citation Flow the quantity. A healthy ratio matters more than one high number: many low-quality links say less than a few strong, relevant ones.

Does Google use Majestic’s numbers?

No. Trust Flow and Citation Flow are Majestic’s own estimates, not official factors in the Google algorithm. Use them to compare, not as a ranking goal.

Do I need Majestic for my B2B site?

Usually not straight away. As long as your link profile is small, you are better off investing in content and a few strong links. A backlink tool only pays off with active link building or competitor monitoring.
