GEO vs SEO vs AEO: the difference explained

Copy for AI

GEO, SEO and AEO are often used interchangeably, but each aims at something different. SEO makes you findable in the blue links of Google. AEO, answer engine optimization, ensures you deliver the direct answer at the top of the search results. GEO, generative engine optimization, ensures that AI models such as ChatGPT and Gemini mention your brand in their generated answer. In this article you will read the difference per discipline, where they overlap, and where B2B should focus its bets today.

The difference in one sentence

  • SEO aims for a high position in the search results, so that someone clicks on your link.
  • AEO aims for the short, direct answer that Google or a search engine shows at the top.
  • GEO aims for a mention in the answer that an AI model generates.

The difference lies in the destination. With SEO you want someone to come to your site. With AEO you want your answer to be the answer, often before the click. With GEO you want a model to cite your brand when it builds an answer itself from various sources.

What is SEO?

SEO, search engine optimization, is the classic discipline. You optimise your pages around keywords, you ensure a solid technical foundation, and you build authority with relevant content and backlinks. The goal is a high position in Google, so that you draw traffic to your site.

  • Goal: rank as high as possible in the search results.
  • Channel: classic search engines like Google and Bing.
  • How you win: relevant content around search intent, strong internal links, fast technology and authority.

SEO remains the biggest traffic source for most B2B companies. It works predictably, it is measurable, and it compounds: every page that ranks keeps delivering traffic for months without you paying per click. If you want to set the foundation firmly, start with what is SEO and the SEO step-by-step plan. A good SEO approach is at once the foundation the other two disciplines build upon.

What is AEO?

AEO, answer engine optimization, is a refinement of SEO. Here you optimise not to get a click, but to deliver the direct answer: the featured snippet, the “people also ask” blocks and other answer formats at the top of the search results. Your content is built so a search engine can extract a clear, short answer from it right away.

  • Goal: be the direct answer in the search results.
  • Channel: answer formats within search engines, such as featured snippets.
  • How you win: answering questions literally, short and clear paragraphs, a clear structure and logical build-up.

AEO and GEO closely resemble each other because both revolve around “being the answer”. The difference: AEO still plays out within the search engine, whereas GEO plays out in the generative answer of a standalone AI model. AEO is therefore a logical intermediate step.

What is GEO?

GEO, generative engine optimization, is the newest discipline and the place where we, as a pioneer, make the difference. Here everything revolves around “mention me as the answer” rather than “click on my link”. AI models build their answer from what they understand about your brand: your content, your authority and how often you are mentioned elsewhere. GEO ensures that you get that mention.

  • Goal: be mentioned in the answer of an AI model.
  • Channel: generative AI such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.
  • How you win: meaning and authority, content that machines can easily read and cite, and consistent mentions across the entire web.

This is not a distant prospect. More and more decision-makers ask their first question to an AI model instead of to Google. Our founder Tanguy De Keyzer wrote the book “The End of Search” about it, precisely because this behaviour changes the rules of findability. The tricky part of GEO: you have less direct control than with SEO. You do not directly influence a position, but you increase the chance that a model regards you as a reliable source. You do that by telling the same, recognisable story everywhere, by making easily citable content, and by building authority that a model can verify.

Where they overlap

The good news: these three disciplines do not stand apart from each other. They share the same foundation. What works for one largely works for the others too. All three reward:

  • Clear, valuable content that truly answers a question.
  • A logical structure that both humans and machines can read.
  • Authority: backlinks, mentions and a recognisable brand.

That is why it is not a matter of choosing. SEO is the base, AEO sharpens that base at the answer level, and GEO adds on top the layer that ensures AI models pick you up. One strong content approach feeds all three.

Where should B2B focus?

For B2B companies the priority differs from that of a webshop aiming for volume. Your decision-makers search in a targeted way, compare providers and do preliminary research before they get in touch. It is precisely that preliminary research that is shifting to AI models. That is why we recommend this order:

  • Do you not yet have strong SEO? Start there. It is the foundation for all three and it already delivers traffic and leads today.
  • Is your SEO already in good shape? Add the GEO layer on top now that the competition is not yet doing so. Whoever starts early builds a lead that is hard to catch up on later.
  • Do you not want to miss a single click? Take AEO along in your content approach, so that you also deliver the direct answer within the search engine itself.

In practice these tracks run into each other. You write one strong article that answers a real question, you give it a clear structure, and you build authority around it. That same article can rank in Google, grab the answer block and be cited by an AI model. This way every euro you put into content works for three channels at once.

The core: visibility in Google, an answer block or ChatGPT is never a goal in itself. The goal is more leads and revenue. Whether a decision-maker finds you via a search query or via an AI conversation, your site has to convert that visitor. That is where our AI search optimization and SEO come together: we do not optimise for vanity rankings, but for mentions, leads and revenue.
