AI Overviews vs featured snippets: what is the difference?

Copy for AI

A featured snippet is a piece of text that Google lifts word for word from a single page and shows at the very top. An AI Overview is an answer that Google generates itself by summarizing multiple sources. They sometimes look similar, but they work in fundamentally different ways, and they often appear together in the same search results. In this article you will learn the real difference between AI Overviews vs featured snippets, why they coexist, and how to build your content so you qualify for both. If you want the fundamentals sharp first, read our pillar on what SEO is.

A featured snippet is the highlighted answer that sometimes sits at the top of the search results, above the regular links. Google calls this “position zero” because it appears above the first organic spot. Its key characteristic: the text comes directly from one existing web page. Google writes nothing itself, it selects a passage that best answers your question and shows it with a link to the source.

Snippets come in a few fixed forms:

  • A short paragraph that answers a question.
  • A numbered list, for example for a step-by-step guide.
  • A bulleted list.
  • A table of figures or comparisons.

The logic behind it is clear: Google wants to give the user an answer straight away and picks the page that phrases that answer most neatly in a single block. If you are in the snippet, you gain visibility and credibility, because your source sits literally at the top.

What is an AI Overview?

An AI Overview is something else. Here Google does not show a passage from one page, but an answer it assembles itself with an AI model. The system reads multiple sources, combines what it finds and writes a new, summarizing answer from that. Below or beside that answer appear links to the pages it draws on.

The difference therefore lies in the origin of the text. With a featured snippet, Google cites you. With an AI Overview, Google cites a summary it wrote itself, in which your page is one of the sources. Your content is not taken over word for word, but processed.

That shifts the stakes. The goal is no longer only to “write that one passage so Google highlights it”, but to “be credible and clear enough that an AI includes you as a source in its answer”. That is exactly the shift that generative engine optimization is about: being visible in AI-generated answers, not just in classic links.

Why they coexist

Many people think AI Overviews replace the featured snippet. That is not true. They live side by side in the same search results, and for some queries they both appear. Sometimes the AI Overview is at the top and the featured snippet pops up somewhere below it. Sometimes only one of the two appears. It depends on the type of question, the uncertainty Google has about the best answer, and how many reliable sources are available.

They also serve a slightly different need. The featured snippet is strong on a sharp, well-defined question with one clear answer: a definition, a formula, a step. The AI Overview excels on broader questions where the user wants context, multiple angles or a summary of what different sources say.

For you as a brand, that means one thing: you cannot pick one and ignore the other. Your audience asks both kinds of questions. The smart approach is to build your content so it qualifies for both formats, because the underlying signals overlap heavily.

How to optimize for both at once

The good news: you do not have to run two separate strategies. A page that is suited to a featured snippet is usually also a good candidate as a source for an AI Overview. The building blocks are largely the same.

Give a direct answer up top. Start each key section with a clear, concise answer to the question, before you elaborate. That is exactly what a snippet can highlight and what an AI can easily cite. Two to three sentences that genuinely answer the question do more than a long run-up.

Structure with headings, lists and tables. Both systems lean on structure to understand what sits where. A logical build with clear H2s, numbered steps and bullet lists makes your content scannable for human and machine alike. A logical website architecture reinforces that effect across your whole site.

Build demonstrable authority. An AI weighs how reliable a source is before it cites anything. Concrete examples, a clear author or organization behind the content, and consistent information across your whole site all count. Thin, vague pages are rarely cited, no matter how good your opening is.

Write in clear, natural language. Avoid jargon where you can, answer the question the way your audience asks it, and leave no room for confusion. The easier your text is to understand, the greater the chance that Google highlights it or an AI picks it up.

Cover the question fully. A snippet grabs one passage, but the page around it determines whether you qualify at all. Answer the logical follow-up questions too. That raises your chances of both the snippet and a mention in a broader AI answer.

What this means for your rankings

Here is the pitfall. It is tempting to treat featured snippets and AI Overviews as trophies you collect. But a position is not a goal in itself. A snippet that delivers no clicks or no enquiries, and an AI mention that brings no one to your site, are vanity numbers.

What counts is whether that visibility leads the right people to you and converts into pipeline. That requires your content to not only give the answer, but also hand the reader a logical next step: a service page, an example, a conversation. Visibility at the top is valuable precisely because it delivers a qualified visitor, not because a tool puts a checkmark next to it.

That is how we look at the work. SEO and optimization for AI answers are not separate tactics to us, but two layers of one growth engine, with one yardstick: qualified pipeline. A good SEO specialist therefore builds in both directions automatically today, because the clarity, structure and authority you bring into a snippet are exactly the building blocks with which an AI cites you.
