Social media advertising for B2B: channel choice and realistic expectations

Copy for AI

Social media advertising for B2B is not a matter of “just boosting something on LinkedIn”. It is a channel that works when you know who you want to reach, what you are offering them and how long your decision journey is. In this article you will read which channels exist, what is realistic to expect and when social advertising is not a smart move for you.

What is social media advertising in B2B?

Social media advertising means you pay to show your message to a specific audience on platforms such as LinkedIn, Meta (Facebook and Instagram), TikTok or Reddit. It is a form of paid advertising on social networks that runs on targeted reach rather than search behaviour. You pay per impression or per click, comparable to PPC in search engines.

The big difference with search ads: with SEA you reach people who are actively searching. On social you interrupt people who are busy with something else. That calls for stronger creatives and sharper targeting, because you have to earn the attention, not follow the search behaviour.

Which channel suits you?

There is no “best” channel. There is only the channel where your audience is and where your story works. The table below is our rough guide for B2B, followed by what each channel is worth in practice.

ChannelB2B fitWhere it excels
LinkedInHighTargeting by job function, industry and company size; strongest channel for buy-ready decision-makers
Meta (Facebook/Instagram)MediumCheap reach and retargeting; works if your audience is also reachable privately
TikTokLow to mediumBrand awareness among younger decision-makers, requires native content

LinkedIn: the strongest B2B channel

LinkedIn is for most B2B companies the logical first move: you target by job title, industry, seniority and company size and reach exactly the decision-maker you want. The downside is the price, because the cost per click is structurally higher. The common mistake is then switching to a cheaper channel without looking at lead quality. An expensive click from the right director is worth more than ten cheap clicks from people who never buy. You get a grip on what you pay by understanding what LinkedIn Ads cost.

Meta: cheap reach and retargeting

Meta (Facebook and Instagram) gives far cheaper reach and is excellent for reaching people who already know you again. In practice we see that Meta works best alongside LinkedIn, not instead of it: LinkedIn finds the right people, Meta keeps them warm at a fraction of the cost. The common mistake is throwing a purely business message onto a private platform. Dig into how to use Meta Ads alongside LinkedIn and how retargeting via social ads feeds your pipeline.

TikTok, YouTube and Reddit: an extension, not a starting point

TikTok is growing for younger decision-makers and brand awareness, but requires native content that does not feel like advertising: a recycled LinkedIn post does not work there. YouTube is underrated in B2B, with video tailored to every funnel stage. Reddit is small but powerful if your audience sits in specific subreddits and you truly understand those communities. These three are rarely your first channel, but rather an extension once you know which message lands. See also our explanation of TikTok Ads for B2B.

Do not start on four channels at once. Pick one where your audience demonstrably is, and build from there.

Realistic expectations

Here we are honest: social advertising rarely brings in customers straight away. In B2B the decision journey is long and people do not buy on the first ad. What you can expect: awareness among the right people, leads that still need to be warmed up, and data about what lands (which message, which audience, which offer).

Anyone expecting sales within a week will be disappointed. Anyone who tests and adjusts consistently for three to six months builds a channel that brings in customers. The difference lies in patience and in steering on the right numbers.

HOW TO BUILD A CHANNEL Test and adjust consistently repeat & accelerate 01 Pick a channel Where your audience is 02 Test Message and audience 03 Measure Leads and revenue 04 Adjust Scale what works Count on 3 to 6 months, not on sales in week one
Social advertising only brings in customers after months of testing, measuring and adjusting.

Steer on customers, not on clicks

Likes, reach and clicks feel good, but they do not pay your invoices. We look at what counts: how many qualified enquiries and ultimately customers a campaign delivers, and what those cost.

A campaign with thousands of cheap clicks that no one converts is more expensive than a campaign with few clicks that does bring in customers.

What a good campaign needs

Before you spend a euro, these five things need to be in order. If one is missing, you burn budget. We prefer to say that beforehand rather than afterwards.

A sharp audience

Who is your ideal customer and on which platform are they? On LinkedIn you target by function and industry, on Meta by interests and by who you already know. The common mistake is targeting too broadly “for the reach”. Official documentation from LinkedIn on audience targeting shows how granular you can work here; use that instead of choosing the largest possible audience. Narrower and sharper almost always wins.

A strong offer and ad type

Without a reason to click, no channel works. The offer (a webinar, a guide, a free analysis) has to match how warm the audience is. Couple it to the right ad type: a lead form for quick sign-ups, video for explanation or a conversion ad towards your site. Build this up as a social ads funnel instead of showing everyone the same ad.

Creatives that fit the platform

A LinkedIn post is not a TikTok video. On social you interrupt people, so the first seconds have to grab attention. Boring, corporate creatives are the most common reason a campaign does not run. Think of real faces, a clear promise and a concrete call-to-action. More in B2B social ads that are creative and not boring.

Landing page and measurable goals

The traffic has to land where it does something: the most expensive mistake is sending well-paid traffic to a weak page. Make sure the message continues on the landing page, with a clear form and no distraction. Finally, set out in advance what a lead may cost and what result counts as a success. Without that agreement you steer on gut feeling.

When you are better off not doing it

Social advertising is not for everyone the smartest first move. Skip it if:

  • Your audience is barely on social. Some niches you reach better via email or account-based marketing.
  • You have no budget to test. Below a serious testing threshold you get no usable data.
  • Your offer or website is not yet in place. Traffic to a weak page is money thrown away.
  • You expect a quick result. Then you are better off with search ads on buy-ready searches.

Honest advice means we sometimes say: invest this budget somewhere else first.

Common mistakes

In practice we keep seeing the same four mistakes burn budget:

  • Going too broad too early. Four channels at once fragments your budget and you learn enough from no single channel. Start with one.
  • Steering on the wrong numbers. Optimising on cheap clicks or reach delivers busy reports and empty calendars.
  • Not refreshing creatives. Letting the same ad run too long leads to ad fatigue: the audience drops off and your cost per result rises.
  • Giving up too quickly. Anyone who stops after two weeks throws away the data just before it becomes usable.

Frequently asked questions

Which platform is best for B2B social advertising?

For most B2B companies LinkedIn is the strongest first choice thanks to targeting by function, industry and company size. Meta works excellently as a second channel for cheaper reach and retargeting. The real answer depends on where your audience demonstrably is. See also our comparison of Google Ads versus LinkedIn Ads for B2B.

How much budget do I need to start?

Enough to test meaningfully. Below a serious testing threshold you get too little data to draw conclusions, and it is precisely that data that is the return of the first months. Count on three to six months of testing and adjusting, not on sales in the first week.

How do I measure whether social advertising pays off?

Work back from revenue, not from likes: judge a campaign on the number of qualified enquiries and customers and what those cost. Calculate your ratio between return and ad cost with our ROAS calculator.
