LinkedIn Insight Tag: installation, conversion tracking and the Conversions API
Copy for AI
The LinkedIn Insight Tag is a small piece of JavaScript you place on every page of your website. It ties website visits and conversions to your LinkedIn campaigns, feeds retargeting audiences and gives demographic insight into your visitors. You install it best through Google Tag Manager, set up conversions on real leads and complement it with the LinkedIn Conversions API for conversions the browser misses.
For B2B, LinkedIn is often the most expensive channel per click. Then you want to know for certain which campaign produced a demo request. This guide walks through installation, conversion settings, the Conversions API and verification step by step.
What does the LinkedIn Insight Tag do?
LinkedIn describes the Insight Tag in its help article on creating and installing it as a lightweight piece of JavaScript you add to your site yourself, through a developer or through a tag management system. Once active it does three things:
- Measure conversions. A completed contact form, a downloaded white paper or a booked demo is attributed to the campaign and the ad the visitor saw or clicked.
- Feed audiences. You can reach visitors of your site or of specific pages again. That is the basis of LinkedIn Matched Audiences and of retargeting.
- Website demographics. You see which job functions, industries and company sizes visit your site, aggregated and without individual names.
A LinkedIn pixel as a separate product no longer exists: what people call the “LinkedIn pixel” is the Insight Tag. There is still an image pixel for sites where you cannot place JavaScript, but you only use it when there is truly no other way.
How do you install the LinkedIn Insight Tag through Google Tag Manager?
Installing through Google Tag Manager is our standard approach. You keep all tags in one place, tie them to your cookie consent and can test before you publish.
- Create the tag in Campaign Manager. Open your ad account, go to Signals manager in the left menu and choose Insight Tag. Note your partner ID.
- Add the LinkedIn template in GTM. The Community Template Gallery holds LinkedIn’s official template (Insight Tag 2.0). Use it instead of loose Custom HTML.
- Enter your partner ID and let the tag fire on all pages, except pages with sensitive data.
- Tie it to consent. The tag only fires once the visitor accepted marketing cookies. In GTM you do this with the tag’s consent settings or with a trigger that waits for your cookie banner.
- Publish and check the status. In Signals manager you see whether your source is receiving signals. On a low-traffic site it can take a while before the status changes.
If you work without Tag Manager, paste the base code into your site’s global footer, just before the closing body tag. Watch the quotation marks: copying the code through a word processor sometimes produces curly quotes, and then the tag does not work. How do you set up LinkedIn conversions that measure real leads?
The Insight Tag alone does not measure conversions yet. You set those up as conversion rules in Campaign Manager. There are two kinds:
| Type | How it measures | Good for | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Page visit (URL rule) | A conversion counts when someone visits a given URL | Forms with a real thank-you page | Reloads, bookmarks and direct visits also count |
| Event-specific | The tag fires on a specific action via lintrk or the GTM template | Forms without a thank-you page, Calendly, chat | Needs a reliable trigger in GTM |
For B2B we almost always choose event-specific conversions. A thank-you page URL sounds simple, but we often see it change after a site update, or forms in a pop-up have no URL of their own at all. How to measure such forms reliably is in form conversions without a thank-you page.
Three practical rules:
- One conversion per real action. Contact form, demo request and white paper download are separate conversions with their own value.
- One primary conversion you steer on. The rest is informational. Otherwise LinkedIn optimises for the cheapest action.
- Measure embedded tools separately. GTM does not see a Calendly widget or HubSpot form in an iframe by itself. Use the events that tool sends to the page, or measure the appointment server-side through the Conversions API.
What is the LinkedIn Conversions API and when do you need it?
The LinkedIn Conversions API creates a direct connection between the marketing data on an advertiser’s server and LinkedIn. According to LinkedIn, you measure the performance of your campaigns no matter where the conversion happens, and use that data for campaign optimisation. You simply see the results in Campaign Manager, at account, campaign and ad level.
For B2B this is mainly interesting for two reasons:
- Conversions after the form. A lead is only qualified after a sales call, or a deal closes weeks later. You can send that stage back from your CRM, so LinkedIn learns which clicks produce real pipeline.
- Losses in the browser. Ad blockers and browser restrictions stop part of the Insight Tag events. A server-side event fills that gap.
Access is simpler than many people think. Advertisers who want to send data directly can generate an access token from their ad account in Campaign Manager, without their own developer app. Store that token safely: Campaign Manager will not show it again later. If you work with server-side Google Tag Manager, you send the events from the same container that also feeds Meta and Google Ads. How that server-side layer works is in our guide to server-side tracking.
How do you deduplicate the Insight Tag and the Conversions API?
LinkedIn recommends sending events through both the Insight Tag and the Conversions API, but then LinkedIn receives the same conversion twice. LinkedIn’s deduplication documentation explains how to solve that:
- create a conversion rule per source: one for the browser and one for the server;
- in the browser, pass a unique eventId to the Insight Tag (in GTM through the template’s Event ID field, filled from the data layer);
- send the same eventId with the matching server event;
- if the same eventId arrives through both routes, LinkedIn keeps the Insight Tag event and discards the Conversions API duplicate.
So in your reporting you see two conversions, for example “Insight Tag demo request” and “CAPI demo request”. If deduplication works, the Insight Tag conversion usually has the highest count. If it is the other way round, or both are high, the eventId is wrong.
Which mistakes do we see most often?
- An old tag next to the new one. A hard-coded Insight Tag from a previous project plus a new one in GTM. Every page visit and every conversion then fires twice.
- URL rules that no longer match. The site was rebuilt, the thank-you page has a new URL, and the conversion has not fired for months. Nobody notices, because the campaigns keep running.
- Conversion IDs that do not match. GTM still holds the ID of a deleted conversion rule.
- No consent logic. The tag fires before the visitor chose anything. In Belgium and the Netherlands that is not acceptable for marketing cookies.
- Plugin updates that break forms. An update of the form plugin changes the HTML, the trigger stops firing, and GA4, Google Ads, Meta and LinkedIn go silent at the same time. That is exactly what we repaired in the Suivo case.
How do you test whether the Insight Tag works?
- Signals manager. Check that the Insight Tag source is receiving signals and that your domain is active.
- GTM preview. Open your site in Tag Manager’s preview, accept your cookies and check that the Insight Tag fires on every page. Submit a test form and check that the conversion tag fires with the right conversion ID and eventId.
- Network tab. In your browser’s developer tools you see requests to px.ads.linkedin.com for every tag action.
- Refuse your cookies and repeat the test: now the tag must not fire.
- Conversion report. After a day or two you see the test conversion in Campaign Manager. After that, compare the number of LinkedIn leads with your CRM every week.
We run these checks as standard in a tracking audit, together with Google Ads, GA4 and Meta. Want to look yourself first? Start with our conversion tracking audit checklist.
Can you use the Insight Tag without consent?
No. The Belgian Data Protection Authority states that no tracker may be placed or read without prior information and consent, unless it is strictly necessary. An advertising tag is not. In the Netherlands the same applies according to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens). So let the Insight Tag wait for consent to marketing cookies, and only let server-side events leave for visitors who gave consent. How to set up your banner correctly is in cookie banner rules in Belgium. This is not legal advice: check your setup with your DPO or lawyer.
How does this fit into your LinkedIn approach?
A measurable Insight Tag is the condition for steering LinkedIn on leads instead of clicks. How to build campaigns after that is covered in LinkedIn advertising and in our guide to LinkedIn lead generation. If you want someone to set up your full measurement, from Insight Tag and Conversions API to GA4, Google Ads and Meta, our tracking specialist does it in one setup, on request. For the campaigns themselves there is our LinkedIn Ads team. Get in touch for a first check.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I find my LinkedIn Insight Tag?
In Campaign Manager, in your ad account through Signals manager and then Insight Tag. There you find your partner ID, the installation options and the status of your source.
Is the LinkedIn pixel the same as the Insight Tag?
Yes. Anyone talking about the LinkedIn pixel almost always means the Insight Tag. There is also an image pixel for environments where JavaScript is not possible.
How do I install the LinkedIn Insight Tag in Google Tag Manager?
Add the official LinkedIn template from the Community Template Gallery, enter your partner ID, let the tag fire on all pages after consent for marketing cookies and test in the GTM preview.
How long does it take before the Insight Tag is active?
That depends on your traffic. The source becomes active as soon as LinkedIn receives signals from your site. On sites with few visitors that can take a day.
Do I need the LinkedIn Conversions API?
Not always. If you advertise heavily on LinkedIn and want to steer on qualified leads or deals, the Conversions API is the way to send CRM stages back. With small budgets, a correct Insight Tag with good conversion rules is the first step.
