TikTok Pixel: installation, event tracking and connecting the Events API
Copy for AI
The TikTok Pixel is a piece of JavaScript on your website that measures what visitors from your TikTok ads do: fill in a form, add a product to the basket, complete a purchase. TikTok uses those events to attribute conversions, optimise campaigns and build audiences. You create the pixel in Events Manager, install it through Google Tag Manager or a partner integration, set up standard events and complement it with the TikTok Events API for what the browser misses.
For many Belgian and Dutch companies TikTok is a newer channel. That is exactly why the measurement often lags behind: the base code is there, but the events that matter are missing. This guide walks through installation, events, the Events API and testing step by step.
What does the TikTok Pixel do?
The pixel has three jobs:
- Measure conversions. Every action you set up as an event is tied to the ad the visitor came from.
- Optimise. TikTok steers your budget towards people likely to take the same action. Without conversion events, TikTok optimises on clicks or views.
- Build audiences. You can reach website visitors again with retargeting, and TikTok can build lookalikes based on your converters.
TikTok works with a fixed list of standard events, actions with predefined names for reporting, optimisation and audiences. The most useful ones for B2B and lead generation are:
| Event | When to use it |
|---|---|
| SubmitForm | A contact or quote form was submitted |
| Contact | Someone clicks to call, email or chat |
| Schedule | An appointment or demo was booked |
| CompleteRegistration | A registration for a webinar or account was completed |
| Download | A white paper or brochure was downloaded |
| ViewContent | An important page was viewed |
| AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, Purchase | Web shops: basket, checkout, purchase |
How do you install the TikTok Pixel?
TikTok describes the installation in its guide to getting started with the pixel. In broad strokes:
- Create the pixel. In TikTok Ads Manager go to Tools and then Events Manager. Choose Connect Data Source, then Web, and give the pixel a name that matches your domain.
- Choose your installation method. TikTok offers a partner integration (including Shopify and Google Tag Manager) or a manual installation of the base code.
- Install the base code. Through Google Tag Manager you use the TikTok template from the Community Template Gallery and let it fire on all pages, after consent for marketing cookies.
- Set up your events. Create a tag in GTM per conversion that sends the right standard event, triggered by an event in your data layer.
- Test with the tools below before you select the pixel in a campaign.
We almost always install the pixel through Google Tag Manager. You keep all ad tags in one place, tie them to the same cookie consent and can test every change before it goes live. How to build events is in our explanation of event tracking.
Why do you see PageView but no conversions?
This is the question we get most often. The base code fires, TikTok Pixel Helper shows PageView, but basket, form or purchase stay empty. The cause is almost always in the data layer.
Tutorials often use a trigger name like purchase or an event from a specific plugin. If that event does not exist on your site, the tag never fires. Some shop platforms push a data layer with e-commerce events automatically, but a custom site or a WordPress site with a form plugin does not do so by itself. There, a developer or your tracking partner has to push an event at the moment the form was really submitted.
Two practical tips:
- Measure the confirmation, not the click. A click on “Send” is not yet a submitted form. Let the event fire after a successful submission. How that works without a thank-you page is in form conversions without a thank-you page.
- Pass the same event name to every platform. One form event in the data layer can feed GA4, Google Ads, Meta, LinkedIn and TikTok at once. Then you compare channels on the same event.
What is the TikTok Events API?
The Events API is the server side of TikTok measurement. Where the pixel runs in the browser, the Events API sends events from your server, your server-side Google Tag Manager container or your CRM. That catches events that ad blockers or browser restrictions stop, and it lets you pass on actions that happen outside the website, such as a lead that gets qualified in your CRM.
You can connect the Events API in three ways: through a partner (for example your shop platform), through server-side Google Tag Manager, or directly from your own backend. For companies that also advertise on Meta, Google Ads and LinkedIn, server-side GTM is the most efficient route: one server-side layer that feeds every platform. How it works is in our guide to server-side tracking.
How do you deduplicate the pixel and the Events API?
If you send the same event through the pixel and through the Events API, TikTok needs to know it is one conversion. According to TikTok’s deduplication guide:
- you share the same event_id through pixel and Events API, together with the same pixel ID and the same event name;
- events with identical event and event_id that arrive between 5 minutes and 48 hours after the first event are merged;
- TikTok keeps the first event received for measurement and reporting.
If you send different events through each channel, without overlap, deduplication is not needed. But as soon as the same form leaves through browser and server, a shared event_id is mandatory. Create the ID in the browser at the moment of submission and pass it through the data layer to both tags.
Which mistakes do we see most often?
- Pixel not selectable in your campaign. A new pixel first has to receive events. Send a test event through Test Events and give TikTok time to activate the pixel.
- Base code not found. Events Manager says the base code is missing, while Pixel Helper does see it. Often a cookie banner blocks the pixel during the check, or the installation is on a different domain from the one set in the pixel. Accept your cookies and check the domain.
- Double installation. A plugin and GTM each send the same events.
- Every click as a conversion. Measuring every button as Contact, including “read more”. TikTok then optimises on noise. This closely resembles what we describe in cleaning up false conversions.
- “The pixel makes my site slow.” A pixel that loads asynchronously rarely slows your site noticeably. Heavy custom scripts in Tag Manager do. Measure it with PageSpeed before you remove the pixel and rely on the Events API alone.
How do you test whether the TikTok Pixel works?
TikTok provides three tools:
- TikTok Pixel Helper. A Chrome extension that shows per page which pixel and which events fire.
- Test Events in Events Manager. Here you see events from your test session coming in live, including those from the Events API.
- The Diagnostics tab. Events Manager flags problems there, such as missing parameters or duplicate events.
Combine that with the Google Tag Manager preview: accept your cookies, submit a test form and check that the TikTok tag fires with the right event and event_id. Then refuse your cookies and check that the pixel no longer fires. After go-live, compare the number of TikTok leads with your CRM every week.

Can you use the TikTok Pixel without consent?
No. The Belgian Data Protection Authority states that no cookie or tracker may be placed or read without prior information and consent, unless it is strictly necessary. In the Netherlands the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) follows the same line. So make the pixel and the server-side events depend on consent for marketing cookies. How to get your banner and signals right is in cookie banner rules in Belgium. This is not legal advice: run your setup past your DPO or lawyer.
How does this fit into your TikTok approach?
A correctly measurable pixel is the basis for steering TikTok on leads or sales. When TikTok makes sense for B2B is covered in TikTok Ads for B2B. For the campaigns themselves there is our TikTok Ads team. If you want TikTok, Meta, LinkedIn and Google Ads measurement in one server-side setup, our tracking specialist builds it to measure, on request. What such a setup looks like is shown in the Kaizo tracking case. Get in touch for a first check.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I find my TikTok Pixel ID?
In TikTok Ads Manager under Tools and then Events Manager. Every pixel is listed there with its ID, the installation instructions and the diagnostics.
How do I install the TikTok Pixel through Google Tag Manager?
Use the TikTok template from the Community Template Gallery, enter your pixel ID, let the base tag fire on all pages after consent and add a tag per conversion with the right standard event.
What is the difference between the TikTok Pixel and the Events API?
The pixel measures in the browser, the Events API sends events from your server or CRM. If you use both for the same event, you deduplicate with a shared event_id.
Why can I not choose my pixel when creating a campaign?
Usually the pixel has not received any events yet. Send a test event through Test Events and wait until TikTok marks the pixel as ready for campaigns.
How do I check whether the TikTok Pixel works?
With the TikTok Pixel Helper Chrome extension, the Test Events feature in Events Manager and the Diagnostics tab. Also check in the GTM preview that the right event fires with the right event_id.
