Zero-click searches: what they are and how B2B should handle them
Copy for AI
A zero-click search is a query where the user gets the answer straight on Google’s results page and therefore never clicks anything. That affects every website relying on organic traffic. The good news for B2B: not every query is lost traffic, and you can actively defend your visibility. In this article you will read what zero-click searches are exactly, why they keep growing, what it means for your business, and how to adjust your SEO strategy.

What are zero-click searches?
In a zero-click search, Google answers the question itself, at the top of the results page (the SERP), so the searcher does not have to click a single link. Think of a query about the weather, a film’s cast, or a quick definition: you see the answer immediately and close the tab again.
Google pulls those answers from external sources and shows them in a handy box. For the user that is ideal. For websites it cuts both ways: sometimes your brand sits prominently at the top, but you get no visitor as a reward. And no visitor means no chance to convince that person, to get them to request a quote or to build a relationship.

How many searches are really zero-click?
Far more than most business owners think. The zero-click study into search behaviour (based on clickstream data from Datos) found that 58.5 percent of US searches and 59.7 percent of European searches ended without a click. Put differently: out of every 1,000 Google searches in Europe, only around 374 went to the open web as a click, according to that same study.
Line those proportions up and only a small minority of every thousand European searches actually clicks through to the open web:
The trend has been climbing for years. What stands out: it is not only Google features such as AI Overviews and featured snippets taking clicks away, Google also sends traffic to its own products like YouTube and Google Flights. And searchers themselves are spreading out: more and more people search in places other than Google.
- Social media: for news and inspiration people turn to LinkedIn, TikTok or X.
- AI tools: ChatGPT and Perplexity increasingly behave like a search engine.
- YouTube: the second largest search engine in the world.
- Marketplaces: anyone looking for a product often starts straight on a platform like Amazon.
For you that means: being findable is no longer just a matter of ranking high in Google. It becomes a game played on several boards at once. Read more about that in SEO for AI and see what GEO involves.
Which types of zero-click results exist?
Not every zero-click is equal. Some put your brand at the top, others simply swallow the click. These are the main formats in Google:
- AI Overviews: an AI-generated summary at the top, with source citations you can click.
- Featured snippets: a block of text that answers the question concisely, with a link to the source underneath.
- Direct answer boxes: a simplified snippet for very concrete questions, where the searcher rarely clicks further.
- Knowledge panels: the information box on the right for a query about a person, brand or place.
- Local pack: the map with nearby businesses, crucial for local SEO.
- People Also Ask: a list of related questions that unfolds.
The difference matters. A featured snippet or local pack builds brand awareness and often still delivers a click. An AI Overview or direct answer box gives the full answer and rarely lets the searcher through. That is exactly where the core of a smart approach sits: choose deliberately what you aim for.
What does this mean for B2B specifically?
Here we part ways with the doom stories. A large share of zero-click searches is about trivial questions: the weather, an exchange rate, an actor’s age. That is traffic you would never have got as a B2B company anyway, because your customer is not looking for a fact, they are looking for a solution to a problem.
And complex B2B questions (“how do I choose a supplier for X”, “what does Y cost for a company like mine”) do not compress into a box. There the decision maker wants to compare, read and build trust. That requires a click, and that click can come to you.
Our honest position: do not blindly chase zero-click “visibility” if it does not bring in customers. Sitting at the top of an AI Overview feels good, but if that searcher never lands on your site and never submits an enquiry, it is a vanity number. Steer on leads and revenue, not on a flag in the SERP. Sometimes the honest advice is this: simply let a certain zero-click position go and invest your time in keywords that do bring in a visitor with buying intent. More depth on this in our SEO strategy.
How do you stay visible in the zero-click era?
You cannot stop Google, but you can get the most out of the clicks that remain and out of the mentions themselves. These are the levers that work:
- Choose your keywords smartly. Look at which SERP features Google shows per keyword. Aim for queries where a featured snippet or a click is still possible, and leave pure answer questions alone if they deliver no traffic anyway.
- Structure your content. Short sentences, active language, clear subheadings, bullets and lists. Answer concrete questions explicitly, that way you increase the odds of landing in a snippet or People Also Ask.
- Build your authority (E-E-A-T). Expertise, experience, authoritativeness and trustworthiness determine whether Google and AI models dare to use you as a source. Follow Google Search’s guidelines to work on a strong about page, expert content, fresh updates and good backlinks.
- Add schema markup. With structured data, search engines and AI models understand your content faster, which makes you show up more often in rich results.
- Optimise for local. A well-kept Google Business Profile, reviews and local citations help you into the local pack and local snippets.
- Measure and adjust. Track your positions and, more importantly, your leads. If a keyword shifts to zero-click without you seeing anything in return, revisit your investment.
The common thread: make sure your content is so good that Google and AI tools want to cite you, and at the same time make sure that whoever does click through lands on a site that converts. Visibility without conversion is wasted effort. Also read on-page SEO for the practical side.
Search everywhere: do not put it all on Google
Because searchers are spreading out, it pays not to pin yourself to Google alone. You do not have to predict whether your customer will search in ChatGPT, on LinkedIn or in Google tomorrow: you simply make sure you are present in as many relevant places as possible.
For B2B that means concretely: a strong SEO foundation, content that AI models can cite, and visibility on the channels where your decision makers actually hang out. That diversifies your traffic and makes you less vulnerable if Google claims another chunk of the SERP for itself tomorrow. It is not a separate trick on top of SEO, it is the same logic applied to multiple search places.
Frequently asked questions about zero-click searches
What is a zero-click search exactly?
It is a query where Google shows the answer straight on the results page, for example via a featured snippet, AI Overview or answer box, so the user does not have to click a single link.
Are zero-click searches bad for my business?
Not by definition. Many zero-click searches are about trivial facts that would never have become a customer anyway. B2B questions with buying intent are more complex and do deliver a click. So steer on leads, not on the “zero-click” number.
How do I optimise for zero-click results?
Structure your content with short answers and clear headings, answer concrete questions, build your authority (E-E-A-T), add schema markup and look after your local SEO. That way you increase the odds of Google using you as a source.
Is SEO disappearing because of zero-click searches?
No. SEO is shifting. The basics (relevant, well-structured, authoritative content) remain the foundation, only visibility in snippets and AI answers becomes an extra playing field alongside the classic blue links.
What is the difference with GEO?
Zero-click is about answers inside Google itself. GEO (generative engine optimization) is about being named in the answers of AI models such as ChatGPT. Both require the same approach: strong, citable content.
