Comparing GEO Packages and Subscriptions: What's Included?

Copy for AI

A GEO package should contain six building blocks: an audit of where you stand today, content work, technical optimization such as schema markup, off-site authority building, ongoing monitoring and clear reporting. In practice, the content differs enormously from one provider to the next, and that is exactly where the risk lies: two packages at the same price can cover completely different work. In this article we break down the common package formats, which components truly belong in one, where cheap packages fall short and how to choose based on your situation. GEO stands for generative engine optimization: making sure AI models such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention your brand. If you want the full picture first, read our guide on what GEO is.

Which forms of GEO packages exist?

GEO packages usually come in three forms: a one-off audit, an entry-level retainer and a full-service engagement. Which form fits depends on where you stand and how large a role AI discoverability plays in your sales.

The one-off audit. A bounded baseline measurement of your AI visibility plus a concrete action plan. You get a picture of where you stand and what is needed, without immediately committing to an ongoing engagement. This is the logical starting point for anyone still unsure whether GEO is worth the effort.

The entry-level retainer. A lighter monthly subscription with the core: some monitoring, a limited number of pages per month and basic reporting. Meant for companies that want to start but do not yet have the budget or urgency for a full program.

The full-service engagement. A complete monthly retainer in which all the building blocks come together: monitoring, content, technical interventions, authority building and detailed reporting. This is the common model for anyone who wants to grow structurally in AI search results, because GEO is not a one-off intervention but an ongoing process.

The prices that go with these forms, we lay out separately in our article on what GEO costs. Here it is all about the content: what should such a package actually contain?

Which components belong in a GEO package?

A complete GEO package rests on six building blocks. If even one is missing, your engagement is incomplete, even if the price looks attractive. We walk through them one by one.

  • Audit and baseline. The starting point. A good GEO audit maps out whether and how AI models mention you today, where your foundation is weak and which opportunities pay off fastest. Without a baseline, no one will know later whether the work delivered anything.
  • Content and optimization. The heaviest work and the biggest value item. AI models draw on content that answers your buyer’s real questions and that is easy to extract. How to build your pages for that, you can read in content architecture for AI extraction.
  • Technical optimization and schema. Structured data (schema markup) and a clean technical foundation help models understand who you are and what you offer. This also includes brand consistency, because if AI is not sure who you are, a mention takes more effort. See entity consistency and AI visibility.
  • Off-site authority building. AI models lean heavily on what others say about you. Mentions in places the model trusts often weigh more than classic backlinks. Why that is so, we explain in brand mentions above backlinks.
  • Monitoring and measurement. Tracking AI mentions is not a matter of a quick glance in Google Analytics; it requires separate tooling and interpretation. Which signals matter, you can read in the 5 core indicators of AI visibility, and the tools themselves in AI visibility tools.
  • Reporting and course correction. A fixed rhythm in which you see what happened, what it delivered and what the next step is. This is where an engagement separates itself from a list of isolated tasks: without reporting, you steer blind.

The pattern: the first four building blocks are the execution work, the last two make it steerable. Packages that bet only on execution deliver motion without direction. Before you choose a package, it helps to know how those building blocks come together in an AI visibility strategy and what belongs in it.

Where do cheap GEO packages fall short?

Cheap GEO packages almost always cut back in the same three places: measurement, off-site work and reporting. These are not coincidentally the parts that are hardest and that make the most difference.

First, measurement. A low-priced package often delivers content without a baseline beforehand or monitoring afterwards. You then get texts, but no answer to the only question that counts: are you now mentioned more often where your buyer looks? Without measurement, you are buying activity, not results.

Then the off-site work. Authority building, making mentions arise in places AI trusts, takes time and craftsmanship. It is tempting to strip that from a cheap package, but this is precisely what weighs heavily in whether a model mentions you at all.

Finally, reporting and steering. Cheap packages deliver a collection of isolated actions without anyone guarding the whole. The result is work in fits and starts, while the effect of GEO lies precisely in consistency. A low monthly fee that keeps getting pushed back whenever things get busy costs you above all missed visibility in a period where moving early pays off the most.

Also watch out for the opposite: an expensive package full of bloated deliverables your situation does not need. The question is never “how much is in it”, but “does each component contribute to leads”. And be wary of parties that guarantee rankings or a fixed number of AI mentions. No one can make that hold up; the platforms change constantly and the measurement methods are still very much in development.

How do you choose the right GEO package for your situation?

You choose the right package by first getting your starting point and your goal clear, and only then looking at the form. Work through these three questions.

  1. Do you already know where you stand? If not, start with a one-off audit. It tells you whether there is an opportunity at all before you commit to a retainer. It is almost always the wisest first step.
  2. How much does AI discoverability weigh on your revenue? If your best leads come from a long orientation phase in which buyers inform themselves at an AI model, a full-service engagement pays off. If it is still a side matter for now, an entry-level retainer or even just content with measurement will do.
  3. How much can you do yourself? If you have a strong in-house content team, you mainly need strategy, audit and measurement and can keep the execution work in-house. We cover that trade-off fully in outsourcing GEO or doing it yourself.

More important than the package name is what is concretely in it. Ask every provider probing questions: is there a baseline in it, how is it measured, how much content per month, is there off-site work, and how often and how transparently is it reported? Never compare only prices, but always price and scope.

Our honest caveat: we ourselves prefer not to work with standard packages, because no two growth trajectories are alike. A fixed package forces you into a shape that may not suit your situation. What you need should determine what you buy, not the other way around. What a well-considered engagement looks like, you can see in our GEO optimization pipeline.

The short summary

A complete GEO package contains six building blocks: audit, content, technical optimization such as schema, off-site authority building, monitoring and reporting. You find them in three forms: a one-off audit, an entry-level retainer and a full-service engagement. Cheap packages usually cut back on measurement, off-site work and reporting, precisely the parts that determine whether your effort delivers leads. So choose based on your starting point and goal, and always look at price and scope, not at the package name.
