ChatGPT ads: what do we know and how do you prepare?

Copy for AI

ChatGPT has been showing ads since early 2026, but not everywhere yet and not the way classic Google or LinkedIn ads work. OpenAI started testing ads in February 2026 with free and Go users in the United States, and by now in the United Kingdom as well. For Belgium there is no launch date and no advertising platform where you can set up a campaign today. For you as a B2B marketer that means: do not wait for a channel that is not available here yet, but invest now in visibility in AI answers that already counts. You do that with GEO and strong brand signals, not with an advertising budget you cannot place anywhere.

Below you will read what is confirmed, what stays uncertain, and which steps you can already take through AI findability.

Do ChatGPT ads already exist?

Yes, but in a limited way. OpenAI announced on 16 January 2026 that it would test ads in ChatGPT, and put that test live on 9 February 2026. It involves clearly marked “Sponsored” blocks below the chatbot’s answer, visible only to logged-in adult users on the free plan and on the cheaper Go subscription. Paying users on Plus, Pro, Team, Business, Enterprise and Education see no ads. OpenAI states that the ads do not influence the answers themselves and stay visually separated from the content.

Important for you: the rollout started in the US and then expanded to the UK, the first country outside North America and Australasia. For the EU and Belgium there is no launch date yet. OpenAI has said that personalised ads in the EU will only be shown to users who explicitly opt in. In other words: ad space exists in ChatGPT today, but as a Belgian company you cannot run a campaign in it yet.

The move is striking, because OpenAI boss Sam Altman previously called ads a “last resort”. In May 2024 he told Harvard that the combination of advertising and AI seemed “uniquely unsettling” to him. The high cost of running AI at this scale, however, put pressure on finding extra revenue, and less than two years later OpenAI reversed that position.

The interest makes sense. ChatGPT has an enormous user base that actively asks questions instead of scrolling passively. Someone typing “best CRM for a small B2B team” is in solution mode. That is exactly the kind of intent advertisers normally pay a lot for. But as long as the product is not available in Belgium, that stays an opportunity on paper for you, not a channel in your media plan.

What do ads in ChatGPT look like?

In the first tests it comes down to a clearly marked “Sponsored” block at the bottom of an answer, visually separated from the content itself. OpenAI stresses that these ads do not steer the model’s answer. Exactly how the revenue model evolves is less settled and changes fast. The rest of this chapter is therefore partly speculation, based on the first tests and on how other AI platforms and search engines work:

  • Sponsored answers: a clearly marked paid block alongside the answer, comparable to a Google ad but in conversational form. This is what OpenAI is testing today.
  • Paid brand mentions: a brand subtly woven into the answer. This would blur the separation between ad and answer and is not what OpenAI shows today.
  • Contextual recommendations: a product or service suggested based on the conversation, the way AI Overviews and ads now sit side by side in Google.

On the billing side, familiar formats are appearing, such as pay per click. But the exact mechanics and the rollout outside the US and the UK are not settled yet. It is wiser to build your strategy on what is certain than on an ad format that may still be months away in your market.

What does this mean for B2B marketers?

For B2B the story is more nuanced than for a webshop. Your sales cycle is longer, your decision-makers compare and read, and one click rarely leads straight to an order. Even if ChatGPT ads go live in Belgium, attribution will be tricky: someone can see your brand in ChatGPT, google it later and only request a quote weeks after that.

That makes waiting for ads an even weaker strategy. What is already happening today is that AI assistants name brands in their answers, a shift that Google on AI in search is also rolling out in its own search results. If a prospect asks ChatGPT “which agency helps with B2B growth in Belgium”, you either get named or you do not. That does not depend on an advertising budget, but on how clear and trustworthy your online presence is. There is gain to be had now, and that gain keeps counting whether the ads roll out here or not.

Our position is simple: steer on customers and revenue, not on the hype. An advertising channel that is not available here delivers zero leads today. Findability in AI answers does.

How do you become visible in ChatGPT today without ads?

This is where the real work sits, and it connects to what you already know from SEO. Generative Engine Optimization is about being found in AI answers. A few concrete steps:

  • Strengthen your authority. AI assistants lean on trusted sources. Make sure your brand gets mentioned in trade publications, news sites and respected platforms in your sector. Mentions in places the model trusts carry a lot of weight.
  • Write the way people ask questions. Create content that answers real questions in normal language, not just keywords. Think “how do I choose a B2B marketing agency” instead of a dry term.
  • Make your brand a recognisable entity. A consistent name, a clear “about us”, a transparent service offering and structured data help AI understand who you are and what you stand for. Read how that works in our guide on ChatGPT for business.
  • Build a solid knowledge base. In-depth explanations, cases and frequently asked questions give AI more reason to cite you specifically.

The overlap with classic optimisation is large. Whoever does their homework for search engines and AI together stands the strongest. The nice part: this investment pays off today already, regardless of ads.

Should you free up budget for ChatGPT ads now?

No, because in Belgium there is nothing to put budget into for the time being. There is no ad account, no auction, no targeting interface available for the Belgian market. So do not shift a single euro from proven channels like Google or LinkedIn to a product that is not rolled out here yet.

What is smart: directing a small part of your attention and budget at AI findability. That is an investment with double value. It already improves how often you get named in AI answers, and it immediately lays the groundwork in case ChatGPT ads also roll out in Belgium. You will already be the authority the model knows. As a small team this is doable too. You do not have to set up a separate advertising team for a channel that does not exist here yet. You simply strengthen your existing online presence, one well-substantiated piece of content at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT have ads? Since February 2026 OpenAI has been testing ads in ChatGPT, but only for free and Go users in the US and the UK. For Belgium there is no advertising product and no confirmed launch date. Paying users on Plus and above see no ads.

Are ChatGPT’s recommendations sponsored? The regular recommendations come from the model’s training data and web access, not from paid placements. In the markets where the test runs, OpenAI does show separate, clearly marked “Sponsored” blocks below the answer, and states that these do not influence the answer itself.

How do I end up in ChatGPT answers? By strengthening your authority: mentions on trusted sources, clear content that answers real questions and a recognisable brand. You do not steer it directly, but you increase your chances considerably.

Will ChatGPT ads work like Google Ads? Partly unknown. In the first tests it involves marked sponsored blocks below the answer, with pay per click as one of the formats. The full mechanics and the rollout to Belgium are not settled yet.

Is this relevant for B2B or mainly for webshops? Findability in AI answers is especially valuable for B2B, because buyers compare and think things through at length. Being named as a trustworthy option weighs heavily in that decision process.
