Data visualization tools compared: which one fits your marketing data?

Copy for AI

You do not choose a data visualization tool on the number of chart types, but on the question you want to answer every month. TL;DR: for most B2B teams a free dashboard tool like Looker Studio is more than enough, Power BI comes into play the moment you connect multiple channels and a CRM, Tableau only pays off with real volume and your own data team, and Datawrapper and Flourish are publication tools for beautiful charts, not steering instruments. Choose on connectivity and on what you actually need to decide, not on the “wow factor” in the demo.

Because a beautiful chart that steers nothing is a waste. In this article we line up the best-known data visualization tools side by side, and explain when each one fits. If you first want to know how to build a dashboard that your board actually reads, read our piece on data visualization. Here it is purely about the tools.

What does a data visualization tool actually do?

A data visualization tool turns raw numbers, think sessions, leads, conversions and revenue, into a visual overview you read in seconds. If you first want to quickly go through a raw export yourself, a pivot table for marketing data is often enough. The good tools connect to your data sources and turn them into interactive charts, maps or dashboards.

But there is an important distinction in the market that many people mix up. There are two kinds of tools:

  • Dashboard tools (Looker Studio, Power BI, Tableau) connect live data and build reports in which you can steer and click through. These are the tools with which you make your monthly marketing decisions.
  • Publication tools (Datawrapper, Flourish) are made to produce standalone, polished charts that you publish on your website, in a blog or in a presentation. Great for telling a story, but not for running your business.

That difference already determines half of your choice. Do you want to steer something, or do you want to show something?

Which data visualization tools are there, and where do they shine?

Here are the best-known options in a row, with what each is made for.

Looker Studio is Google’s free dashboard tool. It connects seamlessly with Google Analytics 4, Google Ads and Search Console, and is the logical starting point for most B2B teams. No license costs, and you share reports with a link.

Power BI is Microsoft’s tool and shines in connectivity: it brings standalone sources like spreadsheets, GA4 and ad platforms together in one interactive report. You can build for free in the Desktop app, but sharing via the cloud requires a paid subscription (according to Microsoft). You can read more about this in our article on Power BI for marketers.

Tableau is a best-in-class business intelligence tool with strong visualization capabilities. It is not the cheapest option, but you get an intuitive interface that drills into virtually any data source, and enterprise-level governance (according to the vendor). Pricing is role-based: you pay the most for a Creator license (with which you build reports), less for Explorer and Viewer roles that mainly view and click through. A Creator costs 75 dollars per user per month in the Standard edition (according to Tableau); so count on a recurring cost per employee. There is also a free “Public” version and a 14-day trial. If you want to look beyond visualization alone, then compare the broader business intelligence tools.

Datawrapper is not a BI tool, but a publication tool for interactive and responsive charts, maps and tables. Newsrooms like The New York Times use it to make complex data readable for readers (according to the vendor). The free version is fine for internal use; for custom work and white-label you pay from 599 dollars per month (according to Datawrapper). That is a different pricing story than a dashboard tool.

Flourish plays in the same corner as Datawrapper: narrative, often animated visuals that you put in a blog or presentation. Strong for making a point, not for following your numbers daily.

How do you choose the right data visualization tool?

Forget the feature list for a moment. The choice comes down to four things.

Connectivity: does it connect with your data?

This is the most important factor. No tool is good enough to justify a data migration. You need something that connects with your data wherever it lives: your GA4, your ad platforms, your CRM. If a tool does not connect smoothly, you end up copying and pasting every month, and that is exactly where errors and delays creep in. Check in advance whether the sources you use are officially supported.

What do you really need to decide?

Start with the question you answer every month. For B2B that is almost always: where do my leads and clients come from, and what is their conversion rate and eventual revenue. You are not selling through a webshop where every pageview counts; you have a handful of valuable leads per week. You then do not need a tool that can do a hundred charts, but one that shows the ten to twelve numbers that truly matter. How you make that selection, you can read in our piece on the marketing dashboard.

Skill: who is going to work with it?

Tableau and Power BI can do a lot, but with complex data flows you want someone in house who manages it. Looker Studio and the publication tools are easier for non-specialists: drag-and-drop, and you are up and running the same day. Be honest about your team. A powerful tool that no one maintains delivers less than a simple tool that actually gets used.

Dashboard or publication?

Finally, come back to that first distinction. Do you want to steer, choose a dashboard tool. Do you want to publish a chart that tells a story, choose Datawrapper or Flourish. Do not confuse the two, because a publication tool as a daily steering instrument is frustrating, and using a BI tool to share a single chart is shooting a fly with a cannon.

What is our honest recommendation for B2B?

For most Belgian B2B teams: start for free with Looker Studio. It connects with your Google data, costs nothing, and forces you to think about which numbers you show. If you grow toward multiple channels and want to add your CRM, Power BI is the logical next step. Tableau only when you really have volume and a data team; for a small team it is overkill and a hefty cost.

And the data analytics reality: the tool is the smallest part of the work. A beautiful dashboard on polluted data gives you false confidence. First a clean tracking foundation, then visualize. We too often see teams that stared for months at a gorgeous report that steered on the wrong numbers.

Frequently asked questions about data visualization tools

Which data visualization tool is free?

Looker Studio is completely free and connects seamlessly with Google data. Power BI lets you build for free in the Desktop app, but sharing via the cloud requires a paid subscription (according to Microsoft). Datawrapper and Flourish have free tiers for basic use.

Is Tableau worth it for a small business?

Usually not. Tableau is built for large organizations with lots of data and is a considerable investment: you pay per user per month, and a Creator license in particular adds up quickly. A small B2B team is almost always better off with Looker Studio.

What is the difference between a dashboard tool and a publication tool?

A dashboard tool (Looker Studio, Power BI, Tableau) connects live data and helps you steer and click through. A publication tool (Datawrapper, Flourish) creates standalone charts to publish in content or presentations. You use the first to decide, the second to show.

Which tool do I choose if I want to track my marketing and revenue?

A dashboard tool that connects with your CRM and ad platforms. For most teams that is Looker Studio or Power BI. The tool matters less than the choice of which numbers you show: steer on leads and revenue, not on pageviews.

Ready to finally let your data steer?

The tool is the easy part. The real work lies in a clean tracking foundation and the right choice of numbers, so that your dashboard steers on clients and revenue and not on noise. We are happy to help you with that.
