Looker Studio: free reporting that drives decisions

Copy for AI

Looker Studio is Google’s free reporting tool that lets you bring data from GA4, Google Ads and Google Sheets together in one live dashboard. You need no expensive BI tool for it, and for most B2B SMEs it is more than enough. In this article you will read what it is, how to build your first dashboard, and when you are better off looking at a heavier tool.

What exactly is Looker Studio?

Looker Studio is an online visualisation tool that turns separate data sources into clear reports and interactive dashboards. The name has an eventful history: the tool was originally called Google Data Studio, was renamed Looker Studio in October 2022, and got the name Data Studio back in April 2026. Under the hood, it has remained largely the same software all along. Many people still know the tool as Looker Studio, so that is the name we use here. Anyone who used to work with Data Studio or Looker Studio will recognise everything straight away: according to Google, existing reports, data sources and links simply keep working.

Important to understand: Looker Studio is not a data source itself. It collects nothing. It pulls data from other systems, bundles it, and lets you turn it into charts, tables and dashboards. That difference determines everything. Your dashboard is never better than the conversion tracking underneath it. If you measure wrong, your wrong data just looks prettier.

Think of it as a streamlined, free variant of heavy tools like Power BI or Tableau. You get fewer advanced features and no deep code capabilities, but for marketing reporting in a B2B SME that is rarely a problem.

Why is Looker Studio interesting for B2B?

A few reasons why we deploy it for most clients in our data & analytics approach:

  • It is free. According to Google, the standard version is free of charge for all users. There is a Pro version with extra team management and governance, but as an SME you rarely need it.
  • It combines sources. GA4, Google Ads and a Google Sheet in one overview, instead of three tabs nobody puts side by side.
  • It is live. When the source is updated, the new data automatically appears in your report. No more manual cutting and pasting into screenshots.
  • Everyone can read it. A director who does not want to open GA4 does understand a clear dashboard.

Which data sources can you connect?

As a Google product, Looker Studio excels at Google data: you connect GA4, Google Ads, Search Console and YouTube Analytics in a few clicks. But you are not limited to Google. According to Google, it supports more than 1,000 connectors, including sources such as:

  • GA4 for your website behaviour and conversions
  • Google Ads for your advertising performance
  • Google Sheets for everything you track yourself, such as leads from your CRM or a manual revenue list
  • Search Console for your organic search performance

For most B2B SMEs, the combination of GA4 plus Google Ads plus a Sheet is already enough to get a complete picture. Do note: for non-Google sources such as Meta Ads or LinkedIn Ads you often need a paid third-party connector. That usually costs a few euros per month per source.

How do you build your first dashboard?

Do not start with a blank report. That is the fastest route to a dashboard full of charts nobody uses. Work in three steps:

  1. Start with a template. On the Looker Studio homepage and in the Template Gallery you will find ready-made reports. Pick one that matches your goal, for example a GA4 or Search Console report, and adapt it.
  2. Connect your data source. Select the right GA4 property or Ads account and grant access. From that moment on, your report is dynamic: every update in the source appears automatically.
  3. Adjust the visualisations. Click on a chart and choose different metrics, dimensions, colours or another chart type in the side panel. The chart updates immediately.
FIRST DASHBOARD Live in three steps 01 Pick a template Template Gallery 02 Connect a source GA4 or Ads 03 Adjust it choose charts Never start with a blank report.
Build your first Looker Studio dashboard in three steps: start with a template, not with an empty report.

After that, you share the report like a Google Doc: per person as a viewer or editor, via a link, or as an automatic email at a fixed moment. That way your team or client gets the report in their inbox every Monday, without anyone having to export anything.

If you want to understand which chart works when, read data visualization. And if you mainly work with GA4 data, our explanation of GA4 helps you pick the right metrics.

Which numbers do you put on it?

This is where it often goes wrong. A dashboard should drive decisions, not impress. We see too many reports full of visitors, page views and clicks. Those are vanity numbers: they rise nicely, but say nothing about customers or revenue.

So put the numbers that sit close to revenue at the top. In B2B that means: the number of qualified enquiries, the cost per lead, and which channel delivers those leads. Your conversion rate belongs there too, but only next to the absolute number of enquiries, because a high rate on the wrong visitors is worth nothing.

The rule of thumb: if a number on your dashboard never leads to a decision, it does not belong there.

When is Looker Studio enough and when is it not?

Honest advice: for most B2B SMEs, Looker Studio is more than enough. Your marketing data largely sits in the Google ecosystem, your team is small, and you have no data warehouse with millions of rows. In that case, free, fast and readable is exactly what you need. Buying a heavy BI tool then means paying for money and complexity you will not use.

A heavier tool like Power BI or Tableau only becomes interesting when you:

  • have to blend data from many non-Google sources at scale
  • need complex calculations or data modelling
  • work with large datasets where Looker Studio becomes slow
  • require strict governance and permissions at organisation level

For a typical B2B business with a website and some advertising, not a webshop with thousands of transactions a day, that is rarely the case. Start free, and only switch when you hit a real limit. Not because a tool looks more expensive.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Data Studio the same as Looker Studio?

Yes, it is the same tool. Google originally called the tool Data Studio, renamed it to Looker Studio in October 2022, and reversed that name change back to Data Studio in April 2026. The tool itself stayed virtually identical throughout that whole period, apart from a few later additions. Note: this is something different from Looker, Google’s heavier enterprise BI platform.

Is Looker Studio really free?

Yes, the standard version is, according to Google, free for all users. There is a paid Pro version with extra team and security features, but as an SME you rarely need it.

How does Looker Studio differ from reports in GA4?

GA4 collects the data; Looker Studio does not. It pulls data from GA4 and other sources, blends it, and turns it into readable reports that you share more easily with your team or client.

Can I show non-Google data in it too?

Yes, via connectors for sources such as Meta Ads or LinkedIn Ads. They are often paid, usually a few euros per month per source.

Is Looker Studio enough for SEO reporting?

For most SMEs, yes. Connect Search Console and GA4 and you have a solid overview. How you build that is covered in SEO reporting.
