Do AI answers cannibalize my website traffic?

Partly: AI answers often resolve questions without a click, so search traffic can drop. But your brand can actually grow if you get named in those answers.

Yes, partly. AI answers often give users the answer straight away, so they click through to your site less and your organic traffic can drop. But that is not the whole story: if you get named in those answers, your visibility and brand awareness actually grow, even without a click.

Why is my traffic dropping?

This is due to zero-click searches: queries that get handled without anyone visiting a website. An AI Overview or an answer in ChatGPT summarizes the information, so for simple, informational questions the click disappears. Pages that only answered a fact or a definition feel this first. For more complex buying questions the click more often remains, because people still want to compare and get in touch.

Is that bad for my business?

Not necessarily. Less traffic with more mentions can be worth more than a lot of traffic that never converts. If your brand appears in the AI answer as a recommended supplier, you are early in a buyer’s consideration, even before they visit your site. That is exactly what GEO steers on. So the relevant question is not only whether traffic drops, but whether your presence in answers leads to enquiries.

How do I know if AI is affecting my traffic?

You can diagnose this by reading your analytics and search data together: if mainly informational pages drop while impressions hold up, that points to AI answers taking over the click. The approach to establish this cleanly is described in our guide on AI cannibalization of organic traffic.

What does Customer Impact do about it?

We approach this soberly: we look at which pages lose traffic to AI, and shift the effort toward content and mentions that do lead to enquiries. We work exclusively for B2B, with a small and fast team, and steer on customers and revenue, not on visitor numbers that deliver nothing.
