What is an AI Overview in Google?

An AI Overview is the AI-generated answer Google shows at the top of the search results, compiled from multiple sources, with links to the pages it uses.

By Tanguy De Keyzer · Founder & digital strategist

An AI Overview is the summarized answer Google generates with AI and places at the top of the search results. Instead of just a list of blue links, you see a direct answer, built from multiple sources, along with references to the pages Google used.

How does an AI Overview differ from a regular search result?

With a classic result, you click through to a website for the answer. With an AI Overview, you see the summary right away, which sometimes leads to zero-click searches: the user has enough with the answer and does not click through. For you that means being mentioned within the Overview becomes at least as important as a high position below it.

How do you end up in an AI Overview?

The logic resembles GEO: Google picks sources it trusts and that answer the question clearly. What helps:

  • A clear, factual answer that can be lifted straight from your page.
  • A clear structure with questions as headings.
  • Authority and consistency around the topic, not one isolated page.

What does this mean for B2B?

For B2B, the value shifts from the click to the mention. If you appear in the Overview, you are visible precisely at the moment a decision-maker is orienting themselves, even if they do not click through. At Customer Impact we steer on presence in those answers where it leads to enquiries, not on visibility for visibility’s sake. We work only in B2B and stay honest about what is realistic in your sector.
