What is an SSL certificate exactly?

An SSL certificate is a digital file that does two things: it encrypts the connection between the browser and your server, and it confirms that your website is who it claims to be. SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. Technically, modern sites actually use its successor, TLS (Transport Layer Security), but in practice almost everyone still calls it “SSL”.

Encryption means that everything travelling back and forth between the visitor and your website becomes unreadable to anyone watching the network. If someone enters their name, company, email address and phone number on your contact page, that data travels across the internet as gibberish and not as plain text. Without a certificate, someone on the same wifi network can in principle read that data along the way.

One insecure connection can undo all of that in a second.

Important to be honest about: a padlock does not prove that a company is trustworthy. It only proves that the connection is encrypted. Even an untrustworthy site can have a valid certificate. Every form on your site, whether it is a contact request, a quote request or a download behind a form, transmits personal data. Under the GDPR, you are required to protect that data appropriately, and encryption during transport is a logical part of that.

There is also a purely practical conversion angle. Some browsers show an extra warning as soon as you fill in a data field on an unsecured page. Imagine that a visitor is finally ready to get in touch, starts typing, and then gets a pop-up saying the page is not secure. That lead is gone. All your work on a smooth, convincing contact page that generates leads will have been for nothing.

HTTPS is therefore the silent base layer under every form of conversion optimisation of your forms. You can endlessly tinker with field order, button text and the number of questions, but if the connection is not secure, you leak leads in a place where you do not even see it happen.

Does an SSL certificate also help for SEO?

Yes, but you have to keep your expectations realistic: HTTPS is a light ranking factor, not a magic bullet. Google confirmed as early as 2014 that it takes HTTPS into account as a signal in its ranking, and described it at the time itself as a light signal that weighs less heavily than, for example, good content. That is still the right way to look at it.

The real SEO gain lies less in that direct signal and more in the consequences around it. A site that is marked as not secure drives visitors away, and high bounce rates and low engagement do not help your rankings. In addition, HTTPS is a requirement or condition for a number of more modern techniques and for a clean, professional impression with everyone who links to your site.

Do watch out for one pitfall: the switch from HTTP to HTTPS is technically a migration. If you do it sloppily, without correct redirects from every old URL to the https version, you can temporarily lose visibility. The approach requires the same discipline as any website migration without losing rankings: map everything out, redirect neatly and check afterwards.

How do you get an SSL certificate on your website?

In most cases, an SSL certificate is nowadays free and arranged via your hosting, so the cost is rarely the barrier anymore. Many hosting providers automatically supply a free certificate via an initiative like Let’s Encrypt, which issues recognised certificates at no charge and is trusted by all the major browsers. For a standard B2B website, such a free certificate is as a rule perfectly sufficient.

A few points of attention:

  • Automatic renewal. Let’s Encrypt certificates are valid for a relatively short time and must be renewed regularly. Most hosts do this automatically, but check that this setting is active, so that your site does not suddenly end up without a valid certificate.
  • Full coverage. Make sure the certificate covers both your main domain and the www variant, and that every page loads via https. A single image or script that still loads via http can already trigger a mixed-content warning.
  • Correct redirects. Set up a permanent redirect from http to https, so that old links and bookmarks do not land anyone on an insecure version.

Paid certificates with extended identity verification also exist, and can be relevant for large organisations with strict requirements. For most B2B companies, that is overkill. Honest advice belongs here too: do not buy an expensive certificate because it sounds impressive, if a free variant delivers exactly the same padlock and the same encryption.
