SEO audit cost: what do you pay and what do you actually get?
Copy for AI
Outsourcing an SEO audit sounds simple until you put the quotes side by side. One asks a few hundred euros, the other a multiple of that. Same word, completely different price. In this article we are not looking at what an audit examines (you can read that in our explainer on the SEO audit), but at the buying question: what drives the SEO audit cost, which models exist, and where is the value that makes your euros genuinely worth it?

Why the same audit is priced so differently
The word “audit” is not protected. Someone who runs a free tool over your site and forwards the report calls that an audit. Someone who spends days on your technical setup, your content, your link profile and your positioning calls that an audit too. Both send you an invoice, but you get something completely different.
That is exactly why you should not steer on price alone. A low price usually means an automated report. A higher price usually means human work: someone who reads your market, looks at your competitors and works out what is really holding your site back. The question is not “what does it cost”, but “what is in it and what do I do with it”.
What determines the cost of an SEO audit?
A handful of factors explain almost the entire price gap. Once you know them, you read every quote more sharply.
- The size of your site. A one-pager is audited in an hour. A webshop or B2B site with hundreds of pages takes far more crawling and analysis work.
- The depth of the research. Scanning only the technical side is cheap. Technical plus content, authority and strategic positioning is more thorough, and therefore more expensive.
- Human or tool. A tool report rolls out automatically. A prioritised plan takes experience, and experience costs money.
- What you get back. A standalone PDF with scores is something else than an action plan with explanation, sequence and an expected impact per fix.
- One-off or part of an engagement. Some agencies sell the audit separately, others fold it into an ongoing engagement where execution follows straight away.
If you see two quotes with a large price gap, the answer is almost always in this list. Keep asking until you know which of these levers explains why one costs half of the other.
Also watch what is not in the price. Some cheap audits stop at the report and charge separately for every follow-up conversation. Others look more expensive, but include a walkthrough, a priority list and an hour to go through it all together. The cheapest line on the quote is rarely the cheapest outcome. Compare what is included, not what sits at the top.
The three pricing models you will come across
Broadly speaking, there are three ways an SEO audit gets priced. None is better by definition; they suit different situations.
1. The free or very cheap scan
This is a tool report, sometimes with a short conversation on top. It is a fine first look and a good way to see whether anything is wrong at all. Do not expect strategy from it. It tells you something is off, not what you should fix first. A light SEO check often falls into this category.
2. The one-off paid audit
Here you pay for human work: thorough research with a report and an action plan. You get a snapshot plus a list of what to do. The risk is that the plan gathers dust if nobody executes it. An audit without follow-up is a diagnosis without treatment.
3. The audit inside an ongoing engagement
Here the audit is the starting point of the collaboration, not the end product. The analysis flows straight into execution and adjustment. This model often costs less upfront as a separate line item, because the agency earns on the result over time, not on the report. It suits you if you do not just want to know what is wrong, but want it fixed too.
Where the real value sits (and why it is not about the price)
Do not fixate on the cost. The only meaningful question is: does this audit give me a plan that wins me more customers? A cheap report that does not tell you where to start is more expensive than a thorough audit that finds the real cause and gives you a route.
Convert it to your own situation. What is one extra customer per month worth through your website? For most B2B companies that value adds up fast. Against that backdrop, the cost of an audit is rarely the real conversation. The real conversation is whether the audit brings you closer to that extra customer.
It helps to see an audit not as an expense, but as the cheapest step in a growth journey. You pay upfront for clarity, so that afterwards you do not waste budget on fixes that deliver nothing. Companies that start without a plan often fix the wrong things: they spend weeks on details while one blocker is holding back the real traffic. The audit prevents exactly that miss. That makes its cost a saving rather than a line item.
That is why what a tool does not see matters most. Technical issues and isolated errors, software picks those out just fine. But whether you are targeting the right keywords, whether your content convinces your market, and whether your positioning matches where you want to be found: that takes an SEO specialist who understands your sector. Those two layers, content and positioning, are precisely what determine whether you rank at all. An audit that skips them is cheap for the wrong reason.
And in 2026 it does not stop at Google. More and more buyers put their question to ChatGPT, Google AI or Perplexity. An audit that only looks at classic rankings misses whether you also get cited in those AI answers. We treat SEO as the acquisition layer of one growth engine, aimed at pipeline and not at vanity positions, so we look at both.
That broader view also changes how you weigh the cost. An audit that tells you your technical setup is fine but that you show up nowhere in AI answers hands you an opportunity your competitor probably does not see yet. No free tool pulls that kind of insight out. It is exactly why it pays to buy human work instead of downloading an automated report.
DIY, freelancer or agency?
Before you outsource, weigh up three routes. You can check part of the technical side yourself with free tools; that gives a first impression at no cost. A freelancer is flexible and often more affordable, but capacity is limited to one person. An agency brings more breadth and can turn the audit straight into execution. If you are torn between those last two, read SEO freelancer or agency.
More important than who does it is what you get back. Ask every provider one question upfront: “Do I get a PDF with scores, or a prioritised action plan that says what comes first and why?” The answer separates the tool reports from the real work.
Which questions should you ask before you sign?
Before you outsource an SEO audit, put these four questions to the provider. They stop you paying for a score when you thought you were buying a plan.
- Do I get a prioritised action plan, or just a report with numbers?
- Does the audit look at content and positioning, or only at the technical side?
- Do you also check whether I am visible in AI search engines, not just in Google?
- What happens after the audit? Does execution follow, or does it stop at the report?
If you get clear answers to those questions, you know exactly what you are paying for. Want the broader numbers behind an SEO investment? Read what SEO costs. And if you want to understand how the whole picture works first, start with what is SEO.
