Lead generation case study: the BOFU weapon that wins over hesitant B2B prospects

Copy for AI

A good case study is your strongest form of lead generation at the bottom of the funnel, because a hesitant B2B prospect is not waiting for yet another attractive promise but for proof that you delivered for someone else. The moment someone is considering a quote or a demo, social proof beats marketing language. And yet most Belgian B2B companies leave this on the table: they have happy customers but no story that shows those results. This article explains why case studies work, why they are underused, and how to build one that actually generates enquiries.

Why does social proof work so well at the bottom of the funnel?

At the bottom of the funnel (BOFU), your prospect is almost ready to choose. They are comparing you with one or two competitors and looking for a reason to say “yes” or walk away. At that moment your own sales pitch is the least convincing thing you have, because every supplier promises the same. What counts instead is what others say about you.

The numbers are clear. According to BizRate Insights, 91 percent of people read online reviews before making a purchase. And 40 percent of customers follow brands based on recommendations from friends or family, research by Sprout Social shows. That is no small detail: social proof drives buying behaviour directly.

A case study is essentially social proof in its most structured form. Not a scattering of stars, but a story with a recognisable customer, a concrete problem and a measurable result. For a B2B buyer who has to justify the decision to a boss or a team, that is exactly the kind of proof that triggers an enquiry.

Why do so few B2B companies use case studies?

There is an opportunity here that most companies overlook. Only 13 percent of marketers use case studies as one of their main content formats, making it just the fifth most popular content type (as these case study examples and figures show). While it is precisely the content that sits closest to the sale.

Why does that opportunity go unused? Usually for practical reasons:

  • It feels like hassle. Calling a customer, gathering numbers, asking permission: that takes time, and writing blog posts feels faster.
  • Fear of the numbers. Companies do not dare to show a result because they never measured it sharply themselves.
  • The wrong focus. A lot of marketing budget goes to the top of the funnel (traffic and reach), while the content that closes deals is left behind.

That last point is exactly where we stand differently. At Customer Impact we steer on customers and revenue, not on vanity metrics like pageviews or likes. A case study that wins over a hesitant prospect is worth more than ten blog posts that pull traffic but never produce an enquiry. Want to make your existing pages perform before you invest in new content? Then read why you start with your homepage, that is often the fastest lead win.

What makes a case study that really delivers leads?

Not every “customer success story” page works. A case study that converts has a few fixed ingredients:

  1. A recognisable customer. Your B2B prospect must be able to see themselves in the customer in your story. A case about a company in the same sector or of the same size convinces far more strongly than an anonymous “a customer of ours”.
  2. A concrete starting problem. What was going wrong before you got started? The sharper the problem, the more credible the solution.
  3. A measurable result. Not “we are very happy”, but a number: more enquiries, a higher conversion rate, a shorter sales cycle. Numbers make the difference between a testimonial and proof.
  4. A quote from the customer. A real quote, with a name and a job title, gives the story a face.
  5. A clear next step. A case study without a call to action is a missed opportunity. Make sure the reader can click straight through to an enquiry, without unnecessary friction at the bottom of the funnel.

Important: steer on real results, not on polished vanity metrics. An honest story with a credible number works better than a spectacular percentage nobody trusts. We deliberately build case studies around measurable customer results, because that is what a B2B decision maker needs to get internal sign-off.

A good example is our own case study around a new website and branding for Get Driven, where a concrete conversion result carries the story.

Which customer do you pick for your case study?

Not every satisfied customer makes a good case study. Preferably pick a customer that fits the buyer persona you want to attract. A prospect naturally recognises themselves in someone who resembles them: the same sector, the same challenge, the same size.

A practical approach:

  • Start with your best results. Which customers achieved the clearest, most measurable result? That is where your strongest story sits.
  • Match your target market. Do you have a result at a company that resembles your ideal prospect? That case study convinces the most.
  • Just ask. Many satisfied customers are happy to cooperate if you ask politely and do not give them too much work. Write the story yourself and let them only review it.

An honest caveat: never force a case study. If you have a customer with a thin or hard-to-measure result, do not use it. A weak case study undermines your credibility more than it helps. One strong, honest story is worth more than five vague ones.

Where do you use your case studies?

A case study works best where the prospect has almost decided. So do not only put them on a separate “cases” page that nobody visits, but weave them into the places where doubt arises:

  • On your services page, right next to the call to action, so the proof coincides with the moment of deciding.
  • In your quotes and sales conversations, as a concrete reference point for a prospect who is still hesitating.
  • In your follow-up emails, because a case study is strong material for lead nurturing towards an enquiry.
  • At the bottom of relevant blog articles, as a final nudge for the reader you have just convinced.

For B2B (and not for a webshop) relevance beats volume above all: one case study in front of exactly the right prospect, at exactly the right moment, does more than an entire library of generic stories.
