Is SEO Dead Because of AI? What the Numbers Really Say
Copy for AI
No, SEO is not dead because of AI, but it is changing faster than ever. Google still processes billions of searches per day and remains by far the largest source of website traffic. What is shifting is searcher behaviour: more and more often they get a ready-made answer instead of a list of links. In this article you will read what the numbers really say about search traffic, AI Overviews and visibility, and what that shift means for your strategy.
Is SEO dead because of AI?
SEO is not dead, but the discipline is broadening from “ranking high in Google” to “being found where people actually search”, and that is increasingly in AI answers. The panicked question pops up every time a new technology appears. The same prediction was made when social media, voice search and featured snippets rose. Each time, search did not disappear: it changed shape.
What is true is that the old reflex is becoming outdated. Anyone who sees SEO as “stuffing a set of keywords into a text and waiting for a click” notices that this yields less and less. Anyone who sees SEO as “becoming the clearest, most trustworthy source on a topic” is exactly right, because that is precisely what both Google and AI models reward.
What do the numbers say about Google traffic?
The numbers show no collapse, but they do show a clear shift towards fewer clicks per search. Google keeps growing in search volume, only not every search leads to a website visit anymore.
The sharpest signal comes from a Pew Research Center study from March 2025, based on the browsing behaviour of roughly 900 American adults:
- For searches with an AI summary, only 8 percent of users clicked on a regular search result, compared with 15 percent for searches without such a summary. Almost a halving.
- Just 1 percent of visits led to a click on a source cited in the AI summary.
- After seeing an AI summary, more people ended their search session (26 percent) than without one (16 percent).
On top of that, the presence of AI Overviews, the summaries at the top of Google, rose sharply during 2025 and then stabilised at a lower level. In other words: AI Overviews do not appear for every search, but for enough of them to noticeably affect your traffic pattern. How to get into them yourself, you can read in how to rank in Google AI Overviews.
The conclusion is nuanced: search volume is not falling, but the number of clicks per search is. Keeping your position is therefore no longer the same as keeping your traffic.
How much traffic really comes from AI tools?
Traffic that comes directly from AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini remains small for most websites for now, while Google still delivers the lion’s share. Industry estimates put the share of AI referrals for an average site at the end of 2025 at a fraction of a percent of total traffic. Google still sends many times more visitors than all AI platforms combined.
That is exactly the nuance missing from many panicked reports. AI search grows fast in relative terms, but starts from a very small base. For most B2B companies, the direct traffic impact of AI today is therefore modest.
Yet that is no reason to sit back, for two reasons. First, the use of AI tools is growing hard, especially at the start of the buyer journey, where people orient and compare. Second, and more importantly, visibility in an AI answer counts even when no click follows. Being named as the right solution means you shape the buyer’s picture, even without a visit to your site. We work out that logic further in brand mentions over backlinks.
So what has actually changed?
The biggest change is that the goal shifts from “winning a click” to “being named as the answer”. In the past, the fight was for a spot in the list of blue links. Now a second fight has been added: a spot in the sentence the AI model generates.
That second discipline is called GEO, generative engine optimization: making sure models like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews name your brand in their answer. GEO and SEO do not compete, they reinforce each other. An AI model reads the web largely like a search engine: it follows links, reads text and builds a picture of who is authoritative on what. If your page already ranks well in Google, you are also in a stronger position to end up in an AI answer. If you want the full story, start with our complete guide to generative engine optimization, and for the direct difference, with GEO vs SEO.
What stays unchanged is the foundation. Both worlds reward the same thing:
- Content that genuinely answers a real question, without fuss.
- A clear structure with headings, lists and short paragraphs that machines read easily.
- Authority: a recognisable brand that shows up in multiple trustworthy places.
- Technical health: a fast, crawlable site without barriers.
Anyone who has that foundation in order is not afraid of AI, but benefits from it.
What does this mean for your B2B strategy?
The smartest move is to hold on to your SEO foundation and deliberately layer GEO on top of it, measured on leads rather than on raw traffic numbers. Writing off SEO because “AI takes over everything” is an expensive thinking error, because you then lose your largest traffic source on the basis of a still small trend. But ignoring AI is just as short-sighted, because you grab your lead now, while your competitors are still hesitating.
Concretely, for B2B this means the following. Keep investing in substantively strong pages that answer a specific question, because they work for Google and for AI at the same time. Look beyond positions and clicks alone: also measure whether and how you are named in AI answers. Which signals count there, we line up in the 5 core indicators of AI visibility. And keep the end goal sharp: visibility in Google or ChatGPT is not a goal in itself, the real win is more and better leads. A visitor who does not convert is wasted effort, regardless of whether the click came from a blue link or an AI answer.
That is also our honest line towards clients. We promise no positions and no guaranteed mentions, because no one can make that hold up with models that update continuously. What we do build systematically is the clarity, structure and authority that both search engines and AI models need to choose you. How we approach that GEO layer for B2B, you can read at GEO for B2B and on our page about visibility in AI search engines.
The short summary
SEO is not dead because of AI, it is changing. Google remains the largest traffic source, but delivers fewer clicks per search because AI summaries more often give an answer right away. Traffic from AI tools is still small for most sites, but visibility in the answer counts even without a click. The winning approach is therefore not to choose between SEO and GEO, but to keep your SEO foundation in order and layer GEO on top of it, always measured on leads.
