How to rank in Grok: visibility inside the X engine
Copy for AI
Ranking in Grok means you have to be visible on two channels at once: the open web and the live posts on X. Grok is xAI’s AI assistant, built into X (formerly Twitter), and it blends current X conversations with classic web results into a single answer. That makes it different from an assistant that uses only the web or only its memory. In this article you will learn how Grok retrieves its sources, how reliable those source citations are, and what this concretely means for your B2B visibility. It is one part of broader generative engine optimization.
How does Grok retrieve its sources?
Grok decides per question whether it searches public X posts, consults the live web, or both. The model has a set of search tools at its disposal, including a web search and a separate X search that pulls the platform’s real-time data. On a current or factual question, Grok calls those tools, reads a set of sources, and composes an answer from them.
That X integration is the real distinction. Because Grok can read live public posts, it is strong on fast-moving topics where a static model starts to guess or hedges its answer. In practice, Grok can answer two questions at the same time: “what happened” it pulls from news and web pages, and “how are people reacting” it pulls from live X conversations.
For deeper questions, Grok has a more extensive search mode that you turn on via a switch. It works iteratively: the question is split into sub-questions, parallel searches run on the web and on X, fresh links are followed and summarized, and that loop repeats until a limit is reached. The result is a more thoroughly grounded answer, but it takes more time.
In short: Grok rewards content it finds quickly and judges to be relevant, whether that content sits on a web page or in a public post on X. Those are two places where you have to put in the work.
How reliable are Grok’s source citations?
Grok’s source citations only appear when the search tools are actually called, and they are not always reliable. If a search tool is on, Grok logs the URLs it consulted and attaches references to the relevant parts of the answer, visible as clickable links. If the model draws purely from its memory, you get no sources.
Honesty is in order here, because this is how we advise clients. Independent research into AI search tools has repeatedly found that Grok, on news-related questions, often gives incorrect or mismatched source references, where the quoted text does not match what the source actually says. The Columbia Journalism Review and other media outlets have also documented cases where Grok misrepresented facts. In other words: a mention in Grok is valuable, but do not count blindly on the model rendering your content correctly or consistently referring to you.
What does that mean for you? Two things. First, visibility in Grok remains worthwhile, because it is a growing channel with its own engaged audience on X. Second, it is not a place to build guarantees on. We steer clients on leads and revenue, not on a score in a single assistant that does not always get its own sources right. Treat Grok as one signal in a wider picture, alongside ChatGPT and Perplexity.
What does this mean for B2B visibility?
For B2B you win in Grok by being both citable on the web and credibly present in the right conversations on X. Because Grok blends both channels, one channel alone does not cover your risk. Here are the two tracks.
Track 1: make your web pages citable. This is the same foundation that counts in every AI engine. Grok builds its answer from sources it understands quickly, so help the machine.
- Answer a concrete question right away in the first sentence of a section, and only build out afterwards. An AI most easily extracts a short, complete answer.
- Write headings as the questions your audience asks (“What does… cost”, “How does… work”). That makes sections extractable on their own.
- Keep your facts current and factual. Fresh, easily indexable pages have a head start when Grok searches anew for each question.
- Make sure your brand is consistently recognized as an entity. How you approach that you can read in entity consistency for AI visibility.
Track 2: be present in public conversations on X. This track is specific to Grok. Because it searches live posts, what is said publicly about your field and your brand matters.
- Be present in the professional conversations that matter, with substantive posts rather than promotion. Grok picks up context from the discussion, not from advertising.
- Encourage satisfied clients and partners to mention you publicly. Just as with other engines, brand mentions often weigh more heavily than backlinks for your AI authority.
- Realize that the wider ecosystem plays a role. Not only X, but also places like Reddit influence your AI visibility.
A realistic caveat: for most Belgian and Dutch B2B companies, X is not the biggest channel. Invest here proportionally. If your audience is barely on X, track 1 weighs more heavily than track 2. We are a small, fast senior team and would rather pick a few channels that truly pay off than be half-present everywhere.
How do you measure whether you are visible in Grok?
You measure visibility in Grok by asking representative questions yourself and noting whether and how your brand comes back. There is no classic ranking like in Google, so you work with samples.
Ask the questions a prospect would really ask, in your local language and in English, and see whether Grok names you, renders you correctly, and refers to you. Do that both in the regular mode and in the extensive search mode, because they behave differently. Repeat it periodically, because the answers shift along with what is happening live on the web and on X. Because Grok does not always show its sources consistently, do not look only at the citation link but also at whether your brand is correctly present in the substance of the answer. This connects to how you track AI visibility more broadly; you can read more about that in grounding: how AI determines what is true.
The short summary
Grok stands out because it blends live X posts with web sources, which means visibility here revolves around two tracks: citable web pages and a credible presence in the right conversations on X. The source citations are valuable but not always reliable, so treat Grok as one signal in a broader AI visibility plan and not as a channel to build guarantees on. For most Benelux B2B companies, the web foundation weighs the most, with X as a targeted extra track where your audience is genuinely active.
