Google Knowledge Panel: What It Is and How to Claim It
Copy for AI
A Google knowledge panel is the information box that appears on the right (on desktop) or at the top (on mobile) when someone googles your brand or your name. TL;DR: Google compiles it itself from its Knowledge Graph, you can claim it for free to help keep the details accurate, but you only get one once there is enough reliable information about your company on the web. In this article you will read how it works, how you claim it and why it strengthens your brand authority and your AI visibility.

What is a Google knowledge panel?
It is the box of facts that Google shows for a search about an entity: a company, a person, a brand or a topic. Think of the name, a short description, the logo, contact details, social profiles and sometimes reviews or a brief history.
Important to grasp: you do not fill in this box yourself. Google builds it. According to Google, these panels come from the Knowledge Graph, a large database of entities and the connections between them. The system pulls information from sources it trusts and automatically compiles an overview from them.
Do not confuse it with your Google Business Profile. That is the dashboard you use to manage a local location (see local SEO). The knowledge panel is broader and revolves around your brand or entity as a whole. A company can have both.
How does Google compile a knowledge panel?
The Knowledge Graph works with entities instead of isolated keywords. Google understands that “your company” is a thing with properties: an industry, a founder, a location, a website. The more reliable sources confirm that, the more certain Google becomes.
Roughly speaking, this is what happens during a search:
- Google receives the question and retrieves the results.
- It identifies the relevant entity behind the question.
- It gathers facts about that entity from trusted sources.
- It checks whether those facts are correct and shows them in the panel.
Sources that carry a lot of weight include Wikipedia, Wikidata (since Google Freebase closed, the Knowledge Graph partly leans on Wikidata) and structured data on your own site. If you want to understand why the fundamentals matter: read what is SEO.
Why is a knowledge panel valuable for B2B?
Some honest advice up front: a knowledge panel is not a goal in itself. It is a consequence of authority, not the cause of it. But when it is there, it delivers real benefits.
- Visibility and space. The panel takes up a large part of the screen on a brand search. Whoever googles your name immediately gets a tidy, coherent picture.
- Trust. A panel signals that Google considers you a recognised entity. In B2B, where buying decisions are slow and built on trust, that counts.
- Control over the story. By claiming it, you can have incorrect or outdated information corrected.
- AI visibility. This is the big argument today. AI search systems lean on the same entity data. If you are strong in the Knowledge Graph, the chances are higher that models mention you correctly. More on this in SEO for AI and in our explanation of brand mentions over backlinks.
In B2B this is not a webshop game about visitor numbers. What matters is that the right decision maker sees the right, reliable picture on a brand search. That supports your SEO approach, it does not replace it.
How do you claim your Google knowledge panel?
Claiming is free and relatively simple, but only possible if the panel already exists. Google describes the procedure on its official page to claim your knowledge panel. The steps in broad strokes:
- Log in to the Google account you use for your brand.
- Search for your brand in Google and check that the right panel appears. Many companies have similar names, so look carefully.
- Click “Claim this knowledge panel” at the bottom of the box. If you do not see that link, the panel may already have been claimed or you are looking at the wrong one.
- Verify your identity through a linked profile such as YouTube, a verified social account or your website.
- Give team members access through the associated Google management page, so you can handle the upkeep together.
After that you can submit corrections through “Suggest an edit”, per element separately. You do not change anything directly: Google reviews every suggestion manually and checks whether there are online sources that back up your change. Bear in mind that this can take days to weeks.
What if you do not have a knowledge panel yet?
That is the situation most Belgian B2B companies are in. No panel usually means there is still too little reliable, verifiable information about your brand on the web. The solution is not a button, but building authority.
- Strengthen your own site. A clear About page that explains who you are, plus schema markup (structured data) so Google understands your entity properly.
- Earn mentions on third-party sites. Trade media, interviews, guest contributions, speaking roles. The more consistently you show up in relevant, trustworthy places, the stronger your entity becomes. This is broader than classic link building: it is about being mentioned, not just about links.
- Aim for Wikidata or Wikipedia. Hard, but these sources weigh heavily in the Knowledge Graph. Support it with real, verifiable facts.
- Be consistent. The same company name, the same details, everywhere. Contradictory information makes Google uncertain and holds a panel back.
This is exactly the same foundation that feeds your rankings and your AI findability. You are not working on a panel, you are working on authority. The panel is the reward.
Frequently asked questions about the Google knowledge panel
How much does a Google knowledge panel cost? Nothing. It is free. The difficulty is not in money, but in the authority and the reliable sources you need before Google creates one.
How long does the claim process take? Claiming itself goes quickly, but the verification and the review of suggested edits can take several days to weeks. Google decides on this, you have no guarantee.
What is the difference with a Google Business Profile? The knowledge panel is the broader information box about your brand or entity in the search results. The Business Profile is the dashboard you use to manage a specific location, mainly relevant for local searches. A company can have both.
Does a knowledge panel help my visibility in AI search tools? Indirectly, yes. AI systems and the Knowledge Graph lean on the same entity signals. A strong presence in the Graph increases the chance that AI models recognise and mention you correctly.
Why has my knowledge panel disappeared? Usually because someone reported it as incorrect or because the underlying sources changed. Check your details and submit corrections again if needed.
