Google Ads campaigns explained: which campaign type fits your B2B goal?

Copy for AI

Google Ads is not a single button. It is a set of campaign types, each with its own job in your funnel. Most B2B companies start the wrong way round: they pick a type because it sounds familiar or because Google recommends it, and then steer on the wrong numbers. This article flips that around. You choose your goal first, and the campaign type follows from it. See it as a decision guide: per type, you read when it works, when it does not, and where it fits in your growth engine.

Want the basics first? Then read what SEA is as a starting point and come back here to make your choice.

Goal first, type second

Before you switch on a campaign type, answer one question: do you want to capture existing demand, or create new demand?

  • Capturing demand means people are already actively searching for what you sell. You do not have to convince them they have a problem, only that you are the solution. This is the warm bottom of your funnel.
  • Creating demand means your audience does not know you yet and may not even know your solution exists. You build awareness and interest. This is the cold top.

A lot of waste comes from companies using a demand-creation type while counting on a direct enquiry, or the other way around. Every type has its place, but not for every goal. Keep this distinction in mind for everything that follows.

Search: the workhorse for warm intent

Search campaigns show your text ads when someone is actively googling. In B2B this is the most important type, because it is all about intent. Someone searching for “request ERP software quote” wants to buy. Nowhere do you capture that intent as sharply as in Search.

When to choose Search:

  • Your product or service is actively searched for.
  • You want to steer on concrete enquiries, not on reach.
  • You have a landing page that answers the search query exactly.

Search is also where you can steer your budget most tightly, with commercial keywords and a solid exclusion list. Within Search you can also deploy dynamic search ads, where Google automatically generates search ads based on your website for queries your keywords are missing. The downside: it only reaches people who are already searching. If nobody searches for what you sell, Search stays empty and you need a different type to build demand.

Performance Max: power and risk in one

Performance Max (PMax) lets Google distribute your ads automatically across Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail and Maps, driven by machine learning. It promises maximum conversions within your goal. That sounds attractive, and sometimes it works well.

But PMax is only as smart as the data you feed it. Give it a weak conversion definition and it will optimise relentlessly towards the wrong result. In B2B we see PMax campaigns that are full of “conversions” on paper, while zero real enquiries land in the CRM. The algorithm did exactly what you asked, you just asked for the wrong thing.

Consider PMax if your conversion measurement is watertight and you have enough quality conversion data to train the algorithm. Do not start with it if you do not yet have a clear picture of what a lead is worth to you. You would be pointing a black box at a vague goal, and that is an expensive lesson.

Display: reach and repetition, no direct enquiry

Display campaigns show visual banners on websites within Google’s network. This type is about reach and visibility, not direct intent. Someone who sees a banner was not looking for you.

Display has a place, but a modest one. It works for:

  • Remarketing: reaching and bringing back people who already visited your site.
  • Awareness: building it with a specific audience over a longer period.

What Display does not do is move cold visitors to a B2B enquiry in one click. Count on that and you will be disappointed. Use it as a supporting layer in your funnel, not as the engine of your enquiries.

Video and Demand Gen: building demand at the top

Video campaigns (on YouTube) and Demand Gen campaigns exist to spark interest with people who do not know you yet. You tell a story, demonstrate your solution or build recognition. This is demand creation in its purest form.

For B2B with a long sales cycle, these types can be valuable to appear early on your audience’s radar. But do not expect a direct lead flow from them. The effect is indirect and plays out over the longer term: more brand awareness, which makes your Search perform better later because people already know your brand.

Only start here once your bottom of funnel is in order. First capture warm demand, then invest in building new demand. The other way round, you pay for awareness you cannot cash in yet.

Combine types like a funnel

The mistake is thinking in one type. The solution is thinking in a funnel where types work together:

  • At the top you build demand with Video or Demand Gen, so your audience gets to know you.
  • In the middle you keep visitors warm with Display remarketing.
  • At the bottom you capture the enquiry with Search, where intent is highest.

Not every company needs every layer. A small B2B player with a clear offer and active search demand starts perfectly well with Search alone and expands later. What counts is the order: build your bottom of funnel first, because that is where the revenue sits that funds the rest.

That is exactly how we set up paid: not as separate campaigns steering on clicks or ROAS vanity, but as the fast acquisition layer of a single growth engine, measured all the way to the enquiry and the deal. If you want this built or reviewed, a google ads specialist can help you pick the right types for your goal.

Before you switch on any type at all

Whichever campaign type you choose, two things have to be right first, otherwise every type optimises towards the wrong result:

  • Conversion tracking that works, including offline conversions, so you know which click really became a deal.
  • A definition of a real lead, so the algorithm steers on revenue and not on a submitted form that leads nowhere.

If that is not in order, fix it first. Want to dig into the costs? Then read what a google ads campaign costs, and when outsourcing google ads is the smarter move. If you run several campaign types at once, Google Ads scripts save you a lot of routine management work by automating tasks.
