How to Appear in Claude AI: What B2B Brands Need to Know

Copy for AI

Becoming visible in Claude means that Anthropic’s AI assistant mentions your brand or cites your page when someone asks a question that matches your expertise. That does not happen by simply ranking high in Google, but by creating content Claude can easily find, trust and lift word for word. In this article you will learn how Claude handles web search and citations, and what you can do concretely to become a source in its answers.

This is a form of generative engine optimization (GEO): you are not optimizing for a click, but for a mention in the answer an AI model gives. Claude is one of the assistants a growing number of B2B professionals work with daily, so it is worth looking at separately.

How does web search work in Claude?

Claude answers questions in two ways: from its training data and, since Anthropic launched web search for Claude in 2025, through a live search layer. When a question is current or specific, the model decides on its own to consult the web before answering.

The difference between those two modes matters to you. If Claude answers purely from its training data, you get no source references with links. If Claude switches on its search layer, it pulls fresh pages and can cite concrete sources alongside them. For brand visibility you mainly want to show up in that second scenario: mentioned and linked in an answer that leans on live retrieved sources.

In practice this means Claude makes a judgement call per question. For a general, timeless question it draws on what it already “knows”. For a question about a recent development, a specific company or a comparison, it actively goes searching. So if you want to be visible, you need to be present at both levels: in the broad picture the model has of a topic, and in the current sources it retrieves.

Which search engine does Claude use?

Claude’s web search leans on Brave Search as the underlying search layer, and that is an important detail. Anthropic chose Brave as a source of live, independent web results and also listed Brave Search among its official subprocessors. Brave operates independently from Google.

That sets Claude apart from an assistant like ChatGPT, which bases its search layer on a different index. The practical consequence: an approach that only targets Google rankings does not automatically cover your visibility in Claude. You want your most important pages to be easy to find and clearly structured in independent search indexes as well.

Do not fixate on the exact technology behind it, though, because search engines and partnerships change. The underlying lesson is more stable: make sure your content is properly indexable in several places and does not depend on a single channel. How Claude ultimately determines what is accurate and which source it trusts ties into grounding, the process by which AI determines what is true.

How does Claude choose which sources to cite?

Claude cites the sources that give the clearest, best supported answer to the question asked, not necessarily the best known brands. When the model uses its search layer, it retrieves a set of results and picks the passages that answer most directly and reliably.

What stands out is that AI assistants like Claude happily draw on substantive specialist sources: practice oriented blogs, explanatory articles and pages from companies that genuinely have something to say about a topic. A page that gives a clear answer straight away stands a better chance than a page full of throat clearing. Claude wants to be able to lift something without having to guess what you mean.

For you as a B2B brand that means: become the sharpest, most concrete source on your core topic. Not the longest or the most salesy, but the clearest. The less interpretation a model needs to take your point on board, the more safely it cites you.

How do you become a source Claude cites?

You become a source in Claude by making your brand crystal clear and writing content that is literally liftable. Three things carry the most weight.

Make your entity unambiguous. An AI model thinks in entities: brands, people, products and how they connect to a topic. Use exactly the same brand name and the same description of what you do everywhere, so the model can connect the pieces. That consistency of your entity is a direct lever for your AI visibility.

Write citable content. Put the answer at the top, followed by the explanation. Use questions as subheadings with a direct answer of one or two sentences underneath. Be explicit with definitions and facts instead of spreading them across several paragraphs. Short paragraphs, clear headings and lists help not only readers, but also a model to pull out exactly the right passage.

Build signals outside your own site. Claude also forms its picture based on what others say about you. If independent sources and trade media consistently mention you alongside your core topic, that strengthens the connection the model makes. Those brand mentions often carry more weight than individual backlinks, certainly in B2B where your market is small and specific.

Concretely, it helps to:

  • Create one strong, recognisable page per core topic instead of several half finished ones.
  • Tie your expertise to a recognisable face, so person, brand and topic together form one clear whole.
  • Make sure existing mentions of your brand are accurate and up to date.

How do you measure your visibility in Claude?

You do not measure visibility in Claude by positions or traffic, but by whether and how you are mentioned in the answers. That requires a different habit than classic SEO reporting.

Start with the questions your customers really ask. Write a list of prompts that fit your market and put them to Claude yourself. Note each time: are you mentioned, where in the answer, and is your page also cited with a link. Do this repeatedly over time, because AI answers vary and you want to see a pattern, not a snapshot.

Look at your competitors too. Who does get mentioned where you are missing, and which source does Claude cite then? That gap points you precisely to the topics and sources where you still have work to do. Which signals to track structurally is covered in the five core indicators of AI visibility.

Be honest about the limits of such measurement. You cannot steer exactly what a model answers at any given moment, and nobody can guarantee a fixed position in Claude. What you can do is systematically increase your chances and track the trend in your mentions. At Customer Impact we therefore steer on what counts for your business, leads and revenue, not on a vanity scoreboard of mentions.

Is this different from becoming visible in ChatGPT?

The basic principles are the same, but the channels differ. Just as with getting found in ChatGPT, it all comes down to a clear entity, citable content and strong signals outside your site. The difference sits in the search layer underneath: Claude leans on a different search index than ChatGPT, so you do not want to bet on a single source of findability.

The upside is that good work pays off more than once. If your content genuinely becomes the clearest source on your topic, you benefit from that in Claude, in ChatGPT and in your regular organic visibility at the same time. You build one strong foundation instead of a set of platform specific tricks.

The short summary

Becoming visible in Claude is not a matter of luck. Claude decides for itself when to switch on its search layer, leans on its own search index while doing so, and cites the sources that give the clearest, best supported answer. You increase your chances by making your entity clear, writing citable content, building mentions outside your site and measuring your progress on real mentions.
