GEO for IT service providers and MSPs: showing authority to AI

Copy for AI

As an IT service provider or managed service provider, AI models judge you on the signals they can read, and your strongest proof is precisely what often stays invisible. Your certifications sit in a logo bar, your best case studies in a pdf or behind a contact form, and your partner status in an image. A model like ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity struggles to weigh that, so you drop out of the comparison. GEO, generative engine optimization, fixes this, and it is why SEO for MSPs no longer stops at classic search. In this article you will learn why MSPs are so hard for AI to weigh, how to make your certifications and case studies machine-readable, and how to build authority that models trust.

Why are IT service providers hard for AI to weigh?

The problem is that the proof an IT buyer judges you on maps poorly onto how an AI model reads. When you used to choose an MSP, you looked at certifications, partnerships, references and case studies. Those signals still exist, but they usually appear in forms a language model does not process well: a row of partner logos without text, a case video, a PDF brochure, a client name under an image.

On top of that, the IT services sector is crowded and abstract. Dozens of MSPs across the Benelux describe themselves with the same words: “total solutions”, “proactive management”, “your reliable ICT partner”. To a model trying to tell names apart, that is noise. If everyone says the same thing and nobody puts their proof in text, the AI cannot determine who is truly specialised in, say, Microsoft 365 migrations for healthcare or OT security for manufacturing.

The result: when a prospect asks ChatGPT “which managed service providers in Belgium are strong in cybersecurity for industry”, the model draws on what it can read and trust. If you are not there clearly and verifiably, you do not get named, however good you actually are. That is exactly the mechanism we explain in our guide to what GEO is.

What is GEO for an IT service provider?

GEO for an IT service provider means structuring your expertise so that AI models can understand, verify and cite your authority. It is not a separate discipline alongside your marketing, but a layer you build on top of a healthy website and strong content.

Concretely, it comes down to three things. One: you make your proof readable, so a model can actually pick up your certifications, specialisations and results. Two: you make sure your brand is consistent and recognisable, so the model understands you as one clear entity and does not confuse you with a namesake. Three: you build authority outside your own site, because models trust what others say about you more than what you claim about yourself.

For IT companies this is extra relevant because the purchase is B2B by nature: multiple decision-makers, long journeys, high contract value. Much of that orientation now happens through an AI model, before anyone even requests a quote. If you want to dig deeper into that B2B dynamic, read GEO for B2B. Here we focus on what makes IT service providers unique: the weighing of certifications and case studies.

How do you make certifications readable for AI?

Put every certification, competency and partner status explicitly in text, with the full name and its context. An AI model does not read a logo. A row of Microsoft, Fortinet, ISO or CISSP badges tells the model nothing if the names do not also appear as plain, readable text on the page.

So do the following:

  • Write the names out in full, in text. Not just a logo, but a sentence like: “We earned the Microsoft Solutions Partner designation for Security.” Note that Microsoft has since replaced the old Gold and Silver competencies with Solutions Partner designations, so use the current naming, otherwise your information looks outdated.
  • Give context for each mark. What does ISO 27001 mean for your client? Which service does the certification apply to? A model that can link the meaning to a customer question will cite you sooner.
  • Keep the naming identical everywhere. Write your certifications and your company name exactly the same on your site, LinkedIn, partner profiles and directories. Inconsistency confuses a model about who you are. Why that weighs so heavily, you can read in entity consistency for AI visibility.
  • Make it verifiable. Models value claims that check out elsewhere. If your partner status also appears in the official partner directory and on your LinkedIn, the claim becomes more reliable. How AI determines what is true, we cover in grounding: how AI determines what is true.

The difference lies in honesty and precision. If you overstate your certifications or claim a specialisation you cannot back up anywhere, sooner or later you will be caught out, with the AI and with the buyer. Better a sharp, verifiable profile than a vague list of everything.

How do you translate case studies and references into AI proof?

Turn your case studies into readable text with concrete context: for whom, which problem, which approach, which result. Your best references are often hidden in a download, a video testimonial or a client logo without explanation. For an AI model, that is lost proof.

A case study that does count for AI has a few traits. It sits as text on a findable page, not only in a pdf. It names the sector and the type of company, so the model can match you to comparable questions (“an MSP that has experience with hospitals”). And it describes a concrete, honest result instead of a hollow superlative. “We significantly shortened the recovery time after incidents for a manufacturing company” tells a model more than “satisfied client”.

Structure those cases so a model can easily pick up the key sentence. Start each case with a short, summarising sentence that stands on its own, then build out from there. That structure, answer first and details after, makes your content extractable. How to set up your pages for that, you can read in content architecture for AI extraction.

Important from our conviction: the goal is not a mention in itself, but the right lead. A case study that pulls the IT manager of an industrial company toward you is worth more than ten generic mentions. So steer on the specialisation you genuinely want to grow in, not on being found as broadly as possible.

How do you build authority outside your own site?

AI models trust what others say about you more than what you claim yourself, so your authority grows mostly outside your own domain. For IT service providers that means: make sure your brand shows up consistently in the places models read and trust.

Think of vendors’ official partner directories, industry platforms, sector forums, quality interviews and guest contributions. Every consistent mention strengthens the picture that you are an established name in your niche. This is why brand mentions often weigh more heavily for AI than classic backlinks, a principle we expand on in brand mentions over backlinks.

It is a flywheel. The more often reliable sources mention you in a specific context (“MSP specialised in OT security”), the more strongly the model makes that association, and the more often you show up in those kinds of answers. In a market where trust is everything, that is a lead that keeps paying off. And it is exactly what our AI search optimization aims at: visibility that delivers leads and revenue, not numbers that look nice but earn nothing.

AUTHORITY FLYWHEEL How mentions stack up repeat & accelerate 1 Mention in sources AI reads 2 Association model links you to your niche 3 AI names you in relevant answers Every consistent mention strengthens the picture that you are an established name.

The short summary

IT service providers and MSPs are compared by AI on signals the model can read, and your strongest proof, certifications and case studies, often sits in a form that does not weigh. The solution is to make your authority machine-readable: certifications spelled out and in text, case studies as concrete stories with sector and result, a consistent brand profile, and mentions in the places models trust. Start narrow, with the specialisation you want to grow in, and build out from there. Do that honestly and precisely, and you become the name an AI mentions when your ideal client asks their question.
