Google Local Services Ads for service providers: does pay-per-lead work for B2B too?

Copy for AI

Google Local Services Ads are ads that let you pay per lead instead of per click: you only pay when someone actually gets in touch through your ad. For local service providers with clear purchase intent that is attractive, but for classic B2B with a long sales cycle the model often pays off less than a well built SEA campaign. In this article you will read how Local Services Ads work, who they do and do not pay off for, and when you are better off reaching for regular Google Ads.

What exactly are Local Services Ads?

Local Services Ads (LSA) appear right at the top of the search results when someone searches locally for a service, for example “plumber Antwerp”. They show your company name, your rating, your phone number and a Google badge. The big difference from a standard ad comes down to three things:

  • Pay-per-lead instead of pay-per-click. You only pay when a prospect calls you or sends a message through the ad, not for every click.
  • Google guarantee. For guaranteed services, Google can reimburse an unhappy customer, which builds trust with people who do not know you yet.
  • Ranking based on reviews and customers served. Your position does not depend on a bid alone, but also on the number of positive reviews and how quickly you respond.

Important: Local Services Ads are something different from regular Google Ads (which work per click) and from a Google Business Profile (which is not an ad). You can run them separately or side by side.

Why is the pay-per-lead model interesting?

The idea behind LSA is simple: you pay for a conversation with someone who is actively looking, not for a click that leads nowhere. And that search behaviour is strong for local services. According to research summarised by Search Engine Journal, roughly four in five people want to see local ads when they search online for a service or product. Go-Globe reported that about 75 percent of local searches end in a phone call. And figures from Think with Google show that 76 percent of people who search locally on a mobile device visit a business within 24 hours.

That is exactly the kind of purchase intent you want to steer on as a service provider. Statista noted that roughly a third of consumers look at local business listings every day. So the demand is there. The pay-per-lead model makes sure your advertising budget moves along with that demand: fewer enquiries means you also spend less.

Still, “a lead” is not a customer yet. A lead only becomes valuable once you turn it into a job. That is precisely why the quality of your follow-up weighs so heavily here: you pay for every contact, including the contact you let slip.

FROM LEAD TO CUSTOMER You pay per lead, not per customer 1 Paid leads Every contact that comes in costs money 2 Followed-up leads Responding fast counts, also for your position 3 Qualified enquiries The leads that genuinely fit your service 4 Customers Only a booked job earns the money back Every lead you let slip is paid budget: steer on cost per customer, not on the number of leads.
With pay-per-lead you pay from the very first step, but you only earn once a lead becomes a customer.

Who do Local Services Ads pay off for, and who not?

An honest answer belongs here, because LSA do not fit every business. The channel is built around local, hands-on and personal services with direct purchase intent. Think of installers, cleaning companies, locksmiths, lawyers or accountants working locally.

LSA probably pay off when:

  • Your audience searches locally with a concrete, urgent problem.
  • The decision comes quickly: someone calls, asks for a price, books.
  • You can collect reviews, because they help determine your position.

LSA probably pay off less when:

  • You have a long B2B sales cycle with multiple decision makers and quotes spread over weeks or months. A “lead” who calls is then still far from a customer.
  • Your audience is national or international rather than locally defined.
  • Your service does not trigger direct purchase intent but first asks for explanation and trust.

For those kinds of B2B journeys you usually get more out of classic Google Ads with a well thought out keyword structure, as described by Google on search campaigns, and solid conversion tracking. There you steer the whole path from click to qualified enquiry, and you can fine-tune negative keywords, bidding strategy and landing pages for a more complex conversion rate. If you are torn between the two channels, that is exactly the conversation we would rather have up front than afterwards with an empty budget.

How do you set up Local Services Ads?

The setup follows a fixed order. Keep in mind that availability differs per country and per service category; Local Services Ads have not been rolled out everywhere or for every profession.

  1. Check your eligibility. Enter your country, region and service category and see whether LSA are available for you.
  2. Create a separate profile. Even if you already have a Google Business Profile, you need a separate LSA profile with your services, service area and rates.
  3. Submit your documents. For the Google guarantee you have to demonstrate that you are qualified and licensed to do your work. Without that proof, no badge.
  4. Set your budget on leads. You decide how many leads you want per week or month. You only pay for the leads that come in, so with few enquiries you also spend less. Start modestly and scale up when it works.
  5. Follow up on your leads. A lead is only a customer after a booked job. Respond quickly, because missed or unanswered calls can lower your position.

Why do reviews and follow-up determine your result?

With regular ads you mainly steer on keywords, bids and ad copy. With Local Services Ads a layer is added on top: your operational quality counts directly. According to Google on the ranking of Local Services Ads, customer reviews influence your position directly. Whoever collects more and better reviews appears at the top more often.

That has two practical consequences. One: systematically ask for reviews after every completed job, because good service alone is not enough if nobody writes it down. Two: treat your enquiries as if they cost money, because they do. Every lead that comes in is paid for, so every lead you do not follow up on is wasted budget.

This matches how we look at advertising: the goal is not as many leads or clicks as possible, but as many customers and as much revenue as possible. A channel that charges you per lead actually forces you to get your entire commercial follow-up in order. That is not a drawback, that is healthy.

Frequently asked questions about Local Services Ads

What does a Local Services Ad cost?

You pay per lead, not per click. The price per lead differs per service category and region, and you set your own budget based on the number of leads you want. Fewer enquiries means you also spend less.

Are Local Services Ads available in Belgium?

Availability differs per country and per service category, and the rollout is not complete everywhere. First check in the setup whether your profession and region qualify before you build a strategy on it.

Local Services Ads or regular Google Ads for B2B?

For local services with direct purchase intent, LSA are often efficient. For B2B with a long sales cycle and a broader audience you usually get more out of classic Google Ads, because there you can steer the full path from click to qualified enquiry.

Can I reject leads I still have to pay for?

You can turn down jobs that do not suit you, but you still pay for the lead itself. That is why it pays to set your service categories and service area sharply, so that you mainly receive relevant enquiries.
