Duplicate content

Identical or nearly identical content that appears on multiple URLs, making it hard for search engines to choose the right page and diluting rankings.

By Tanguy De Keyzer · Founder & digital strategist

Duplicate content is content that recurs in identical or nearly identical form on multiple URLs, causing search engines not to know which version to show and the value of your content to get split across variants.

How does duplicate content arise?

Most often it is not malicious intent, but a technical side effect. The same page remains reachable via multiple addresses, and Google then counts them as separate copies.

  • URL parameters like ?sort= or a UTM tag behind the same page
  • Http and https versions or www and non-www existing side by side
  • Supplier product texts that you copy verbatim
  • Print, mobile or language variants without a clear reference

On B2B sites you often see it with service or location pages that resemble each other. A good URL structure already prevents part of the problem.

Why is it a risk for your findability?

Google rarely actively penalizes duplicate content, but it does work against you. The search engine decides itself which version to show, and that is not always the page you want to rank. Moreover, your signals fragment: backlinks and relevance spread across copies instead of bundling on one strong page. Do not confuse this with thin content, which is about content that is too thin, not about repetition.

How do you solve it?

The cleanest solution is a canonical tag that points to the canonical URL, so all value comes together on the main version. At Customer Impact we tackle this from the angle of what delivers revenue: we track down duplicates via a thorough content audit and make sure your strongest pages get the full authority. Not technical busywork, but targeted cleanup so the pages that bring in customers stay truly findable. That is invisible maintenance that counts directly.
