What is llms.txt and do I need it?

llms.txt is a text file that gives AI engines an overview of your most important content. Worth adding, but no silver bullet: your content and authority weigh far more heavily.

By Tanguy De Keyzer · Founder & digital strategist

llms.txt is a simple text file in the root of your website that gives AI engines a structured overview of your most important pages and content. You can add it, but do not expect miracles from it: it is a supplement, not the key to visibility.

What does llms.txt actually do?

The idea behind llms.txt is to offer a large language model a short, readable overview of what is on your site and which pages really matter. Think of it as a signpost: instead of a messy sitemap, an engine gets a tidy summary with links to your core content. The file is deliberately simple, written in markdown, so a model can read it easily.

Should I add it to my site?

It cannot hurt and takes little effort, so for most B2B sites it is a reasonable step. But be realistic: far from all major AI engines actively use the file, and the standard has not been widely adopted yet. So it is no guarantee that you will appear in answers more often. We add it where it makes sense, but see it as a small part of a much larger GEO story.

What actually works?

What really counts for AI visibility is content an engine can trust and cite: clear answers to real questions, factual backing and authority on your topic. A text file changes nothing about the quality of your content. A brand that consistently writes well and clearly about its field gets picked up, with or without llms.txt.

What does Customer Impact do with this?

At Customer Impact we treat llms.txt as a useful hygiene measure, not a strategy. We focus on what demonstrably works: making your content findable and citable for AI engines, so that mentions lead to real enquiries. We work exclusively in B2B, with a small and fast team, and are honest about what a technique does and does not deliver. We prefer progress in customers and revenue over betting on tricks that are not yet proven.
