Cancelling your marketing agency contract: how and when to do it

Copy for AI

Do you want to cancel your marketing agency contract? Do not do it on impulse, but do not stay out of fear of losing everything either. The right order is simple: check your contract first, make sure everything that belongs to you actually ends up in your hands, and arrange the handover before you pull the plug. Do that, and switching is far less risky than it feels. In this article we walk through the steps so you can make the move calmly and without a gap.

Does this sound familiar?

Frustration with an agency usually creeps in slowly. It is often not one thing, but a sum of things you have simply had enough of one day:

  • Every month you get a report full of positions and impressions, but no leads or revenue you can actually trace back.
  • You only ever speak to an account manager, never to the people who actually do the work.
  • Growth promises keep getting pushed forward, and nobody really takes responsibility.
  • You ask for access to your own Google Ads or Analytics and get evasive answers.
  • The work feels slow, generic and disconnected from your business.

If you recognise a few of these points, your gut feeling is justified. But before you cancel, it is worth taking a cool look at whether the agency really is the problem.

Is it the agency, or is it the brief?

Not every disappointing collaboration is the agency’s fault. Sometimes the brief was too vague, expectations were never spoken out loud, or the wrong KPI was being steered on because nobody defined upfront what success looked like. Ask yourself these questions honestly:

  • Do we have clear, shared goals? If nobody ever agreed that this was about leads rather than traffic, the agency is logically steering on the wrong thing.
  • Does the agency get what it needs? Fast feedback, access, budget and input from your side all shape the result.
  • Is the timeline realistic? SEO and content growth need months. Anyone expecting results after six weeks will always be disappointed.

If it is the brief, a new agency solves nothing and you only lose time. If it is the agency, you usually see these red flags: no transparency about what is happening and what it costs, reports that impress but do not enable a decision, no direct line to the people doing the work, and new excuses instead of a plan. The green flags at a good partner are the mirror image: you steer on leads and revenue, you speak with whoever does the work, and you always know where you stand. In how to choose an SEO agency you will find the questions to ask before you sign again.

When can you cancel? Check your contract first

Before you do anything, dig out your contract. Two things decide when you can leave cleanly:

  • The notice period. Many agencies work with a notice period of one to three months. That period usually starts on the first of the following month, so work out carefully when your last invoice falls.
  • The minimum term or renewal. Some contracts have an initial term (twelve months, for example) or renew automatically if you do not cancel in time. Miss that window and you are locked in for another year.

Pay attention to the form as well: if it says you must cancel in writing or by registered letter, stick to that so your cancellation holds up legally. And check whether there are clauses about ownership of created content, campaigns or licences. That is exactly where the catch we discuss below tends to hide.

If there is no clear contract, the usual rules around reasonable notice periods apply. In that case you are better off choosing a correct, announced wind-down rather than an abrupt break, if only to keep the handover smooth.

What do you ask back? Everything that is yours

This is the part most people think about too late, and where you run the biggest risk. Make sure the following is demonstrably yours and under your control, preferably before you cancel:

  • Access to your accounts. Google Ads, Google Analytics, Search Console, your ad accounts and your social channels belong on your own email address or company account, with you as the owner (admin), not the agency.
  • Your data. Historical data in Analytics, conversion measurement and your advertising history are worth gold to your new partner. Make sure it is preserved and that access does not disappear when the agency leaves.
  • Your content. Copy, imagery, blogs and landing pages you paid for belong to you. Ask for the source files and put it in the contract or the agreement that the rights sit with you.
  • Your campaigns. The setup of your Google Ads campaigns, your keyword lists, negative keywords and your ad copy are things you want to take with you, not rebuild from scratch.
  • Your domain and hosting. This is the most important one. If your domain name is registered in the agency’s name, you have a problem. Make sure the domain registration, the DNS and the website access are in your name. Without ownership of your domain, your position is weak.

If you meet resistance on these points, that immediately says something about the partner you are leaving. A decent agency hands back what is yours without discussion.

How to switch without falling into a gap

The biggest fear when switching is the gap: a period in which nobody works on your marketing, your campaigns stall or your rankings slide. You avoid that gap with the right order:

  1. Choose your new partner first. Find and select your new agency or specialist before you cancel, not after. That way you overlap the knowledge transfer.
  2. Arrange access and handover. Let your new partner look at the accounts, campaigns and analytics while the old one is still running. They will see straight away what is valuable and what can go.
  3. Only then cancel, with the notice period as a buffer. Use the notice period as an overlap window. During those weeks everything keeps running while the new partner is already getting up to speed.
  4. Guard your rankings and campaigns. As long as your content, structure and domain stay intact, a clean switch does not cost you your positions. Rankings only drop when pages disappear or access falls away, and this approach prevents that. You can read more about this in outsourcing SEO.

That way you never pull the plug without a safety net. The work carries on, and the knowledge travels with you.

The right order keeps your marketing running during the switch.

Agency, freelancer or in-house: an honest comparison

Now that you are choosing again anyway, this is the moment to think about the model. A large full-service agency gives you everything under one roof, but often with a junior doing the work and an account manager as the go-between. A freelancer is sharply priced and direct, but sometimes lacks breadth and continuity. A small, specialised senior team sits in between: you work directly with the people doing the work, and you buy depth in exactly the area you want to grow in. Promises and guarantees say little in this respect, rather look at how a partner steers and reports. Why a hard SEO guarantee is worth little, we explain separately. If you are still torn between providers, the best digital marketing agencies will help you compare.

What a small, senior partner does differently

We are such a small senior team ourselves. In growth marketing we do not steer on vanity positions, but on leads and revenue, and you always speak with whoever actually does the work. No layer of juniors, no empty guarantees, but doing more than you expect. For Get Driven our approach delivered 400% conversion growth, because we connected brand, website and conversion instead of optimising them separately.

Considering the switch? Check your contract first and gather your access, then let us take a look at your current situation with no obligation. We will tell you honestly whether switching makes sense, and if so, how to do it without a gap. Get in touch and we will look at it together.
