What is schema markup?

Schema markup is structured code you add to your pages so search engines understand the content better, which can lead to more eye-catching search results with extra information.

Schema markup is a form of structured data: code you add to your pages to tell search engines explicitly what the content means. A price, a review, an event or a frequently asked question is thereby recognized unambiguously. That helps Google place your page correctly and can lead to more eye-catching search results.

How does schema markup work?

An ordinary page leaves Google to interpret the text itself. With schema markup you provide context in a standardized format, usually according to schema.org. That way a search engine knows for certain that a number is a price or that a block forms a question and answer. This opens the door to:

  • Rich snippets: search results enriched with stars, prices or extra information.
  • Better recognition by AI search systems that want to cite your content.
  • Clearer context, so your page appears for the right queries.

Does schema markup deliver a higher position?

Schema markup is not in itself a direct ranking factor. You do not automatically climb because of it. What it does do is make your result more eye-catching in the SERP and your content more understandable for search engines and AI systems.
