What are Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals are Google's metrics for the user experience of your website: how fast pages load, how quickly they respond and how stable they stay while loading.

By Tanguy De Keyzer · Founder & digital strategist

Core Web Vitals are a set of metrics with which Google assesses the user experience of your website. They measure how fast your most important content loads, how quickly a page responds to interaction and how stable the layout stays while everything loads in. Together they give a picture of how pleasant your site feels for the visitor.

Which metrics are included?

Core Web Vitals consist of three core scores that each measure a different aspect of the experience:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how fast the largest element appears on screen.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how smoothly the page responds when the visitor does something.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how stable the layout stays, without shifting elements.

These scores are closely tied to the overall page speed of your site. Slow or jumpy pages frustrate visitors and cost you conversions.

Do Core Web Vitals influence your position in Google?

Yes, Core Web Vitals are a ranking factor, but a secondary one. Relevant content that answers the search intent weighs more heavily. Good scores give you an edge when pages are close in substance, but you cannot compensate for poor content with them.

More important is that a fast, stable site holds on to visitors. In B2B, where a single enquiry is worth a lot, every visitor who does not drop off because of a slow page counts.

How do you improve your Core Web Vitals?

You start by measuring, for example via tools that show your real scores, and then tackle the biggest bottlenecks. It is often about heavy images, too many scripts or a slow server.

At Customer Impact we treat Core Web Vitals as part of the technical foundation, not as a goal in itself. We do not chase perfect scores in tools, but solve the problems that actually cost you visitors, positions and enquiries. That way your site stays a reliable foundation on which content and authority can build.
