What is scroll depth exactly?
Scroll depth measures how far down a visitor views a page. In practice you usually work with thresholds: the share of visitors who reach 25 percent, 50 percent, 75 percent and 100 percent of the page. That way you see at a glance where attention falls away.
It differs from other metrics because it is about engagement within a single page, not about traffic or visitor counts. Two pages with the same number of visitors can have a completely different scroll depth. One holds people all the way to the bottom, the other loses them after the first screen. That difference is a direct signal about the quality of your content and structure.
How do you measure scroll depth?
You measure scroll depth with event tracking. You set things up so an event is recorded as soon as a visitor passes a certain threshold. So the foundation is solid tracking. The GA4 scroll event
In Google Analytics 4, scroll measurement is included by default in Enhanced Measurement. Important to know: the built-in scroll event only fires once a visitor reaches 90 percent of the page, according to the Google Analytics documentation. So you get one threshold, not 25/50/75. If you want those intermediate thresholds, you set up custom events yourself, usually via Google Tag Manager with a scroll depth trigger. The common mistake here is thinking GA4 shows the full scroll pattern out of the box; it does not.
Heatmaps and scroll maps
Beyond purely quantitative measurement, heatmaps and scroll maps give a visual picture: they colour the page in up to where most people get. A scroll map exposes at a glance where attention sinks away, something a table of percentages does far less directly. Session recordings
Scroll events and maps do not tell you why someone stops. Session recordings do: you watch a real visitor hesitate, scroll back or get stuck on a confusing block. Use them deliberately, as a supplement to a drop-off point you spotted in the numbers, not to watch a hundred recordings at random. The three sources complement each other: events give the numbers, maps the pattern, recordings the why.
What do you do with scroll depth?
The value sits in the action that follows. A few concrete applications:
- Spot early drop-off. If scroll depth falls sharply after the first screen, your opening is not landing or the promise is unclear. That touches on your above the fold. Sometimes the cause is technical, such as scroll hijacking taking over natural scrolling and frustrating visitors.
- Move important elements up. Do only a few people see your call-to-action? Move it to a point that does get reached.
- Test the length. If almost nobody reaches the end, the page may be too long or too slowly built up.
- Rearrange content. Put proof and arguments where attention is still high.

Honestly: scroll depth is a signal, not a goal
We will say it plainly: deep scrolling is not a goal in itself. Someone who scrolls to the bottom but does nothing does not convert. And someone who clicks your request button after 30 percent is exactly what you want. Scroll depth without context can mislead.
That is why you always tie it to real outcomes: requests, downloads, contact moments. Steer on customers and revenue, not on an average scroll of 80 percent. In B2B, with a long sales cycle and multiple decision makers, lead quality weighs more than how far someone scrolled. So use scroll depth as one piece of the puzzle alongside conversion data and qualitative insights, and only draw conclusions once you have enough visitors to measure reliably. Common mistakes with scroll depth
In practice we see the same pitfalls come back time and again.
- Equating scrolling with reading. Someone can swipe down quickly without reading a word. Scroll depth measures the presence of content on screen, not comprehension or attention. So combine it with engagement metrics from Google Analytics such as engaged sessions and time on page.
- Drawing conclusions from too little data. On a page with forty visitors a month, every percentage is noise. Wait until you have enough sessions before you move anything.
- Mistaking GA4’s 90 percent threshold for full scrolling. Without custom events you miss the whole pattern up to that point. Set the intermediate thresholds deliberately.
- Looking at scroll depth as an isolated number. A low scroll combined with a high bounce rate points to a different problem than a deep scroll without conversion. The context makes the signal.
