Landing page speed and Quality Score: what Core Web Vitals have to do with it

One third of your Quality Score is determined by the experience on your landing page. And one of the hardest signals within that experience is speed: how long it takes before your page is usable, especially on a mobile device with a mediocre connection. Where speed sits inside the landing page speed quality score

Quality Score in Google Ads is built from three components: expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. That last component is an umbrella term for how well your page matches the promise of the ad, how easily someone finds what they were looking for, and how smoothly the page works.

Speed is an explicit part of that. Google assesses whether your page loads quickly and whether visitors can move through it without friction. A page that builds up slowly, that jumps around while you read, or that only responds after seconds to a tap gets labelled “below average” on page experience. And that label translates directly into a lower Quality Score, a worse ad position and a higher cost per click.

The important nuance: Google does not punish you for a few milliseconds. The system looks at orders of magnitude. A page that is usable within a second is fine. A page that only responds after five or six seconds on a typical B2B device is in the danger zone. The difference between those two partly decides whether you stretch the same budget further or pay a surcharge every single time.

Core Web Vitals as a measurable proxy

Core Web Vitals are the set of metrics with which Google tries to objectify “fast and stable”. They consist of three numbers, and it pays to know what each one means because they each touch a different part of the experience.

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) measures how long it takes before the largest element on screen has loaded, usually your hero image or your headline. This is the “how fast do I see something useful” metric.
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint) measures how quickly your page responds to an interaction, such as a tap on a button or a field. This is the “does it feel responsive” metric and it has replaced the older FID measurement.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) measures how much the page shifts visually while loading. This is the “does everything stay put” metric; nothing is more frustrating than a button that jumps away just as you go to tap it.

These three numbers are not a direct input into your Quality Score in the sense that Google publishes a formula. But they are the best public proxy for what the page experience component is trying to capture. Score well on Core Web Vitals and in practice you meet exactly the signals that strengthen both your organic ranking and your ad experience. Why mobile is the decider

Most B2B marketers test their landing page on a fast desktop with fibre. There, everything loads in a flash and no problem shows up. But a sizeable share of your paid clicks lands on a phone, often over a mobile network and on a device with less processing power than your laptop.

Google knows that, and judges your page experience with the mobile reality in mind. A page that runs smoothly on desktop but stumbles on an average device over heavy images, blocking scripts and fonts that load late delivers a mobile experience that does not match your ad promise. The result is a lower Quality Score at exactly the moments when a buyer on the move taps your ad.

The double cost of a slow page

A slow landing page costs you money in two ways, and it matters to see both because they reinforce each other.

The first cost is the higher CPC. A weaker page experience drags down your Quality Score, and a lower Quality Score means you have to bid more for the same position. In other words, you pay a penalty on every click, over and over, for as long as the page stays slow.

The second cost is the loss of conversions. Every extra second of load time raises the chance that someone bails before they have even seen your offer. That visitor did cost you a click, but returns nothing. So you are paying for traffic that you then chase away yourself with a slow page.

Add those two together and the picture is clear: speed is not a technical detail but a direct lever on your cost per lead. The same ad budget produces more enquiries as soon as the page becomes usable faster, simply because you pay less per click and hold on to more clicks all the way to the enquiry form.

Where to start without getting lost in the tech

You do not have to be a developer to capture the biggest wins. The heaviest slowdowns are usually predictable: uncompressed images loaded at far too large a size, a stack of scripts from tracking and chat tools that block loading, and fonts that show up late and make the page jump.

Start by measuring on a realistic mobile profile instead of on your own fast connection. Look at which of the three Core Web Vitals scores worst and tackle that one first. Often a single heavy hero image or one slow external script is responsible for the bulk of the problem. One warning against tunnel vision: Core Web Vitals scores are a means, not an end. A perfect score on a page that attracts the wrong people or offers no clear next step still produces no pipeline.
