Getting into the Google Local Pack: the key local ranking factors

Copy for AI

The Google Local Pack is that block with three businesses and a map that appears at the top of a local search, such as “accountant Ghent” or “plumber near me”. For local service providers, that block is often worth more than the first organic spot: it sits higher, shows reviews, and directly delivers calls and directions. So the question is not whether you want to be in it, but how you get in. This article explains which ranking factors count and what you concretely do about them.

How Google ranks the Local Pack

For local results, Google is unusually transparent. The company itself names three factors that determine which businesses appear in the Local Pack: relevance, distance and prominence. Everything you do to improve your local visibility falls under one of those three. Understand the three, and you understand the whole game.

The difference with classic search engine optimisation is that distance becomes a hard, physical factor. In the regular organic results, your location barely counts; in the Local Pack, it is decisive. That is why a smaller business with a strong profile can beat a big player for searchers who are closer by.

Relevance is about how well your business matches what someone is looking for. To judge that, Google reads your Google Business Profile first and foremost. The biggest mistake we see: profiles that are half filled in. Every field you leave empty is a signal you fail to send.

Concretely, you steer relevance like this:

  • Pick the right primary category. This is the heaviest relevance lever in your entire profile. “Accounting firm” and “Tax advisor” attract different searches. Choose the category that describes your core activity most sharply and add secondary categories for your side activities.
  • Fill in your services and description completely. Describe in plain language what you do and for whom. Use the words your customers use, not your internal jargon.
  • Make sure your website supports the search. Google also looks at the page behind your profile. A strong, locally relevant landing page reinforces your profile. This is where your local SEO and your Business Profile strengthen each other.

Distance: how close are you to the searcher?

Distance is the most literal factor. Google calculates how far your business is from the location someone is searching from, or from the place named in the query. With “near me”, that is the user’s current position; with “plumber Antwerp”, it is Antwerp city centre. How Google reads that local intent exactly, you can read in “near me” searches.

There is little you can change about your physical location, but you can make sure Google knows it correctly and consistently:

  • Set your address exactly right in your Business Profile. A wrong or vague location pin costs you relevant impressions.
  • Do you serve a region without a fixed shop? Set a service area instead of an address. That way you appear for the places you genuinely serve.
  • Do not waste energy on tricks. Creating a fake location at another address is exactly the kind of manipulation Google cracks down on hard. In the long run it delivers damage, not rankings.

Because distance weighs heavily, it is normal that your position shifts depending on where the searcher stands. One fixed “ranking” does not exist in the Local Pack; you rank differently per location.

Prominence: how well known and trustworthy are you?

Prominence is the factor you can influence most and where the difference is usually made. It is Google’s estimate of how established and trustworthy your business is, based on signals from across the whole web.

The most important prominence signals:

  • Reviews. Both the number and the average score count, and reviews also influence your click-through. A business with a hundred recent, answered reviews earns trust that an empty profile never gets. Ask for them structurally, at the natural moment right after a successful job, and reply to every review, including the less flattering ones.
  • Consistent NAP details. Your Name, Address and phone number must be identical everywhere: on your site, in your profile and in local guides and directories. Contradictory details confuse Google and push down your trust.
  • Mentions and links. If you get named on relevant, trustworthy local sites, your prominence rises. This overlaps with classic SEO: an authoritative website lifts your Local Pack position too.
  • Activity on your profile. Photos, posts and up-to-date opening hours are not ranking magic, but they keep your profile alive and raise your click-through.

The order in which you tackle this

With three factors and dozens of levers, many businesses get bogged down in loose to-dos. So work in this order, from foundation to growth:

  1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Not a single empty field. This is your zero point.
  2. Get your category and NAP details flawless. Correct first, then consistent across the whole web.
  3. Build a review engine. Make asking for reviews a fixed part of your process, not a one-off campaign.
  4. Strengthen the website underneath. Locally relevant pages and authority lift relevance and prominence at the same time.

That last step is where most businesses fall short, and that is exactly where an experienced SEO specialist makes the difference between a completed profile and a profile that structurally brings in leads.

Measure the Local Pack as an acquisition channel, not as a scoreboard

The biggest pitfall is treating the Local Pack as a leaderboard you want to sit high on. A position is not a goal. What counts is what it delivers: phone calls, directions, clicks to your site and enquiries. You find those numbers back in the insights of your Business Profile.

At Customer Impact, we see local visibility as one layer of a bigger whole. You want to be found not only in the map pack, but also in the organic results and to be cited by AI search engines such as ChatGPT, Google AI and Perplexity. Those channels feed each other: the same reviews, consistent details and strong content that carry your Local Pack position also make you more visible in AI answers. For us, SEO is the acquisition layer of one orchestrated growth engine, steered on pipeline, not on vanity positions.

So always steer back to the real question: does your local visibility deliver more conversations with the right customers? If not, you are optimising the wrong lever.

Getting started

Winning the Local Pack is not a matter of one trick, but of systematically covering the three factors: relevance through a complete profile and the right category, distance through correct location details, and prominence through reviews, consistent data and a strong website. Do that in the right order and measure in leads, not in positions. Want to climb specifically on the map? Then read how to rank higher on Google Maps.
