Beneficiary and payer for Meta ads: what you need to set up

Copy for AI

Since Meta applies transparency rules to ads in the EU, you have to provide a beneficiary and a payer when creating an ad. The beneficiary is the organization that benefits from the ad, the payer is the party that pays for it. Often these are the same, but not always, for example when an agency manages your campaigns. In this article you will read what the terms beneficiary and payer mean, why Meta asks for them and how to set them up correctly in Ads Manager.

What do beneficiary and payer mean?

The two terms are closely related, but they are not the same:

  • Beneficiary. The person or organization that receives the benefit of the ad. If you advertise for your own company, you are the beneficiary. If the ad runs for a client, then that client is the beneficiary.
  • Payer. The party that actually pays for the ad. Usually this is the same as the beneficiary, but an agency or partner can act as the payer while the benefit lies with someone else.

In many cases you simply enter your own company for both fields. The split mainly exists for situations where the benefit and the payment lie with different parties.

Why does Meta ask for this?

The reason is transparency. European regulation requires platforms to make clear who is behind an ad. Meta therefore shows next to your ad who the beneficiary is, so users can see for which organization a message is running. It is the same move toward openness that you also see in the ad library, where anyone can view active campaigns.

For you as an advertiser it means one extra field to fill in, but it is not an empty formality. If you fill it in incorrectly or incompletely, Meta can reject your ad, resulting in delays.

Where do you set the beneficiary and payer?

You find the setting at the ad set level, not at the campaign or ad level. Here is how it works:

  1. Open your campaign in Ads Manager and go to the ad set.
  2. Scroll in the settings to the section about the beneficiary and payer.
  3. Enter the organization that benefits from the ad (beneficiary) and the party that pays (payer).
  4. If both are the same, it is enough to enter your own company.

Once set, Meta often remembers your details for subsequent ad sets, but check it with every new campaign. If you want to understand the basics of the platform first, read what the Facebook Ads Manager is.

What if an agency manages your Meta ads?

If you have your ads on Facebook and Instagram managed by an agency, the split is usually clear: your company gets the benefit from the campaigns and is therefore the beneficiary. Who is listed as the payer depends on the arrangement. If you pay yourself through your own ad account, you are also the payer. If the payment goes through the agency, the agency can act as the payer while you remain the beneficiary.

Important in both cases: the ad account is ideally in your own company’s name, with the agency as the manager. That way you keep control over your data and your history. You can read more about this in outsourcing social advertising. If we develop your Meta Ads, we handle these settings for you as well, so your campaigns pass review smoothly.

Frequently asked questions

Are beneficiary and payer mandatory?

For ads targeting the EU it is mandatory. Meta asks for the details to comply with European transparency rules and shows the beneficiary next to your ad. Without correct entry, your ad can be rejected.

What do I enter if I advertise for my own company?

Then you enter your own company as both the beneficiary and the payer. The split is only relevant when the benefit and the payment lie with different parties, for example with an agency or partner.

Where do I see the beneficiary?

The beneficiary appears in the transparency information next to your ad, so users can see for which organization the ad is running. It is part of the broader transparency that Meta applies around ads.
