What is topical authority?

Topical authority is the degree to which Google sees you as an authority on a subject, built by covering a theme completely and deeply with coherent content.

By Tanguy De Keyzer · Founder & digital strategist

Topical authority is the degree to which Google regards you as an expert on a particular subject. You build that authority not by touching a theme with a single page, but by covering it completely and deeply with coherent content. The more thoroughly you handle a subject, the more Google trusts that your pages give the best answer, including on competitive keywords.

How do you build topical authority?

You start from a central theme that matches what your audience searches for and what you offer. Around it you create a network of pages that each answer a sub-question, connected to one another by internal links. Together they form a cluster that illuminates the subject from every angle.

The key is completeness. If you miss important sub-questions, a content gap arises: a hole a competitor fills and by which they overtake you. By systematically spotting and closing those gaps, you cover the theme more completely than the rest. The complete action plan is covered in our guide on building topical authority.

Why is topical authority important for SEO?

Google wants to send searchers to sources that genuinely master a subject. One good page can rank by chance, but a site that handles an entire theme consistently and deeply gains ground structurally. New pages within such a cluster also rank faster, because they benefit from the authority you have already built.

For B2B that is powerful. Your audience asks many questions before choosing a provider. If you answer all those questions better than the competition, you are present at the right moment every time and your site becomes the logical starting point in their research.

How does Customer Impact approach this?

At Customer Impact we build topical authority not to grow the number of pages, but to reach the right decision-maker. We choose themes based on what leads to enquiries and revenue, map the content gaps and fill them in a logical order.

We work exclusively in B2B, never for webshops, and steer on results over vanity numbers. A fully covered theme is not a goal in itself: it is the way to build, over weeks and months, a solid, lasting position that delivers a steady stream of relevant enquiries.
